Joe Buck
Tim McCarver in Auto-Tune
I posted this last year and since Tim McCarver is leaving Fox at the end of this upcoming MLB season, I figured I would bring this promo back. It has him and partner Joe Buck trying to appeal to a younger audience by putting their open in Auto-Tune.
Pretty funny.
The Tim McCarver Broadcasting Timeline
No matter what you think of Tim McCarver and judging from the reaction on social media, a lot of people are happy he’s leaving the Fox broadcast booth after this season. I was not a fan and felt he was overrated by the New York media when he was with the Mets in the 1980′s into the 1990′s. In addition, I thought he was verbose and overexplained things. However, you can’t deny his longevity in the booth and his career.
He’s been either the number analyst or co-number dating back to 1985 when he was with ABC Sports. McCarver has worked with some of the game’s best broadcasters including Jack Buck, Bob Costas, Dick Enberg, Sean McDonough and Al Michaels. He’s one of the few broadcasters who has worked for ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC. And behind the mic, he’s been witness to some of the game’s greatest moments either as a local or national announcer.
So thanks to Fox Sports, we have a timeline of McCarver’s broadcasting career in addition to the partners with whom he’s shared the mic.
Here’s the timeline.
TIM McCARVER’S BROADCASTING CAREER HISTORY
Tim McCarver’s notable broadcasting career began as his standout four-decade baseball career concluded. A three-time Emmy Award winner, he established his reputation as a first-guesser, which has always set him apart from other analysts, during a local broadcasting career that spanned 23 seasons and as MLB’s predominant national voice since 1984. TIM McCARVER’S MEMORABLE ON-AIR MOMENTS
- Steve Garvey’s game-winning home run off Lee Smith in Game 4 of the 1984 NLCS
- Umpire Don Denkinger’s infamous blown call in Game 6 of the 1985 World Series
- The classic 16-inning sixth game of the 1986 NLCS between the Mets and Astros

- The Dodgers/Mets seven-game NLCS in 1988
- The 1989 Earthquake Series between the A’s and Giants
- The heart-stopping 1991 World Series between the “worst to first” Twins and Braves, considered by many to be the greatest Fall Classic ever (all seven games were won by the home team)
- The base hit by Atlanta’s Francisco Cabrera that scored Sid Breem with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth of the seventh game of the 1992 NLCS
- Joe Carter’s World Series-winning home run off Mitch Williams in Game 6 of the 1993 World Series
- The Yankees return to glory as they came back from an 0-2 deficit to beat the Braves in the 1996 World Series
- Mark McGwire breaking Roger Maris’ single season home run record in 1998
- David Cone’s perfect game for the Yankees on July 18, 1999

- The Diamondbacks take a 2-0 lead at home
- the Yankees roar back with three wins at Yankee Stadium, all by one run and Games 4 and 5 in extra-innings after needing to score two runs in the bottom of the ninth to tie
- the Diamondbacks win Games 6 and 7 at home
- Arizona’s come-from-behind win in the ninth-inning of game 7 (on-air McCarver noted: “The problem with bringing the infield in against a guy like Rivera is that left-handed hitters tend to get a lot of broken-bat hits to…the shallow part of the outfield,” thus predicting Luis Gonzalez’ game-winning hit)
- The Angels first-ever World Series win the seven-game All-California World Series vs. San Francisco in 2002
- The nail-biting 2003 ALCS between the Yankees and Red Sox that featured Aaron Boone’s walk-off pennant-winning home run in Game 7

Some interesting material there.
A Monday Sports Media Notebook
Let’s get cracking on some fresh content on this Monday afternoon. Plenty of stuff to go over.
- Sports Illustrated’s Richard Deitsch’s Monday column discusses Baltimore Ravens safety Ed Reed reporting on the Red Carpet at The Oscars and reviews Fox’s Daytona 500 coverage.
- The man who started SportsGrid, ABC News legal analyst Dan Abrams, the site has been sold to RotoExperts.
- I’m getting a lot of reaction to my post on whether Fox can find the proper role for Erin Andrews.
- Randolph May at Multichannel News talks about a case over Comcast’s refusal to move Tennis Channel off a dreaded sports tier.
- To Sports Business Daily where Richard E. Lapchick laments the lack of hiring diversity in the sports media.
- Overseas, ESPN is getting out of the UK television business, selling its channels to BT Group which beat it out for the rights to the English Premier League. ESPN will continue to maintain its digital UK assets and also kill ESPN Classic in Europe and Africa in separate decisions.
- USA Today’s Michael Hiestand feels Fox got off to a fast start with the overnight ratings for the Daytona 500.
- Hiestand also looks at the other sports overnight ratings from the weekend.
- David Lieberman at Deadline says News Corp.’s Deputy Chief Operating Officer James Murdoch (son of Rupert) says even with Fox Sports creating new all-sports cable channels, the company plans to be pennywise and not pound foolish over rights fees.
- In the Sherman Report, Ed Sherman talks with Golf Channel’s David Feherty about the season premiere of his weekly interview show.
- Bruce Allen at Boston Sports Media Watch looks at a preposterous argument put the forth by WEEI’s Gerry Callahan regarding the Daytona 500 and Danica Patrick.
- Bill Carter at the New York Times notes how NBC has had a precipitous fall into the ratings basement after starting off so well when Sunday Night Football was on.
- Phil Mushnick of the New York Post feels the Federal lawsuit against Lance Armstrong wreaks of hypocrisy.
- From Dan Steinberg at the Washington Post’s DC Sports Bog reports that MASN’s Kristina Akra who was the Nationals’ on-field reporter is leaving the network. No word on where she’s going or who’s going to replace her.
- Jim Williams from the Washington Examiner says David Feherty will reveal a different side of golfing legend Jack Nicklaus tonight.
- Tom Jones at the Tampa Bay Times says Fox didn’t do itself any favors during its Daytona 500 prerace coverage.
- The Houston Chronicle’s David Barron notes that a local sports anchor is leaving his station after more than 20 years of service.
- Dan Caesar at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch says Cardinals fans will be able to see and listen to their team throughout Spring Training.
- Dusty Saunders in the Denver Post writes about a Rocky Mountain TV veteran who wants to return to his sports roots.
- Tom Hoffarth of the Los Angeles Daily News has the SoCal Sports Calendar for this week.
- Tom has the five things he learned from the weekend.
- Bruce Dowbiggin of the Toronto Globe and Mail makes clear of his disdain for CBC’s Don Cherry.
- Paulsen of Sports Media Watch says opposite the Daytona 500, the NBA on ABC took a big ratings hit.
- To Matt Yoder of Awful Announcing who looks at what Joe Buck plans to do with the St. Louis Cardinals if he manages to get the team and Fox Sports Midwest to sign off on his idea.
- Michael Shamburger at The Big Lead says Katherine Webb is 1st Round talent.
Ok, I’m going to end the linkage/notebook there.

Seattle Seahawks at Washington Redskins — Joe Buck, Troy Aikman, Pam Oliver & Erin Andrews, 4:30PM
FedEx Field – Landover, MDSCHRAGER: YOUNG GUNS CAN CHANGE QB POSITION IN NFL WITH SUCCESS – For the first time in NFL history, three rookie quarterbacks will start playoff games – Andrew Luck for the Colts, Russell Wilson for the Seahawks and Robert Griffin III for the Redskins. Two of them; Seattle’s Wilson and Washington’s RGIII are featured on FOX’s Seahawks-Redskins Wild Card matchup. FOXSports.com NFL contributor Peter Schrager can see the prototype of the NFL quarterback change if the rookie signal callers and their second-year counterparts find ultimate success in the playoffs. “Wilson, Griffin, and Colin Kaepernick will be playing for the future of how teams draft quarterbacks. We’ve already seen the read-option work with great success in those three cities,” Schrager writes. “If one of these three can win a Super Bowl, don’t be shocked if the “prototype” of an NFL quarterback changes from a standard drop-back guy to a mobile, outside-the-pocket playmaker moving forward.”

Your NFL Viewing Guide For Week 12 of the 2012 Season
Well?
Well what? We’re back for another viewing guide. Do you want to ask a proper question?
Ok, who’s on bye this week?
No one. We’re done with the byes for the season. We have a full slate of games from now on.
Seriously? No more byes?
Seriously. We’re done with the byes for the rest of the regular season.
What about blackouts?
Oh, we have two. Despite Carson Palmer’s return to Cincinnati, Bengals fans won’t be able to watch their team play against Oakland. The game has been blacked out in the Cincinnati area.
In addition, the Atlanta Falcons game in Tampa Bay will be blacked out as well. This marks the 18th blackout out of 21 home games for the Buccaneers. And this despite the team winning its last four games and five out of its last six.
UPDATE, 10:35 a.m.: Totally forgot about a third blackout this week, in San Diego. The Ravens-San Diego game won’t be seen in San Diego and Los Angeles.
Which are your Games of the Week, my lord?
From CBS, I’ll choose the AFC North rivalry game between the most corrupt NFL organization in the world, the Pittsburgh Steelers (I keed) and my Cleveland Browns (Kevin Harlan/Solomon Wilcots) and Baltimore-San Diego (Ian Eagle/Dan Fouts) where we await the final days of Norv Turner.
On Fox, there’s the aforementioned Atlanta-Tampa Bay game (Thom Brennaman/Brian Billick/Laura Okmin) and the national game, San Francisco at New Orleans (Joe Buck/Troy Aikman/Pam Oliver).
And the Sunday Night Football game between the last two Super Bowl champions, Green Bay at the New York Giants on NBC (Al Michaels/Cris Collinsworth/Michele Tafoya).
Anything else I should know?
Well, Jim Nantz and Phil Simms get a rare Sunday off having worked the Thanksgiving Day game. However, Fox’s “A” team of Buck, Aikman and Oliver plus NBC’s Sunday Night Football team are working after calling games on Turkey Day.
Interesting quirk. Anything else?
No. Enjoy your football Sunday.
UPDATE, 10:45 a.m.: We do have something else. Brian Billick’s back is acting up and he won’t be able to call today’s Atlanta-Tampa Bay game with Thom Brennaman and Laura Okmin. Charles Davis tweeted that he’ll be doing the analysis in Billick’s place. This just one day after Charles called the Stanford-UCLA game on Fox.

Your Week 11 NFL Viewing Guide For The 2012 Season
So where were you last week?
Sick. I went to bed early without doing any NFL previews. I think you got by fine. In fact, no one asked me about them.
Who has the doubleheader?
CBS does for Week 11. In the first opportunity for the flex this season, Indianapolis-New England was moved from the early window to the 4:25 p.m. ET national spot. That’s added to San Diego-Denver which was originally the lone late game for CBS. In fact, Jim Nantz and Phil Simms who were originally slated to call Chargers-Broncos were reassigned to Colts-Pats last Monday. Kevin Harlan and Solmon Wilcots will now call the AFC West matchup.
Any blackouts this week?
Buffalo narrowly avoided one for Thursday and Oakland appears safe this week after both markets got help to ensure local fans could see their games. But for the Bills, the rest of the home schedule looks in danger for blackouts.
Byes? Who’s on the bye?
Houston, Minnesota, the New York Football Giants and Seattle are taking the week off. ]
What are your Games of the Week?
Overall, it’s actually the Monday Night game between Chicago and San Francisco. But for Sunday, it’ll be Green Bay at Detroit on Fox (Joe Buck, Troy Aikman and Pam Oliver), Cleveland at Dallas on CBS (Greg Gumbel and Dan Dierdorf) and Indy-New England also on CBS.
So what else should we look for?
Well, for Week 12, instead of one Thursday game, we get three as Thanksgiving Day games kick in. And don’t forget NBC is back in the Thanksgiving picture this year after being out since 1997. But we’ll do a special Thanksgiving Day NFL Viewing Guide for Thursday. Let’s not jump ahead. Enjoy your Sunday.

Fox Prepares to Air Every Pitch of the 2012 World Series
Fox Sports is back to air the entire World Series, no matter how far it goes. Fox’s history with the World Series dates back to 1996 and since 2000, the network has aired the Fall Classic consecutively and will continue to do when the new MLB TV contract takes effect in 2014.
As usual, Joe Buck & Tim McCarver will be high above the fields in San Francisco and Detroit calling their 15th World Series together, a record for a network TV announcing team. And for McCarver, it will be his 23rd overall as an analyst dating back to 1985.
Erin Andrews and Ken Rosenthal will be the on-field reporters. Andrews makes her World Series debut for Fox.
And MLB Network’s Matt Vasgersian and Harold Reynolds will co-host the World Series pregame and will be joined by Fox’s Eric Karros and Chicago White Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski.
In addition, Fox will unveil another camera called “Phantom Cam” which can record action at 20,000 frames a second further slowing down slow motion replay.
Here’s the Fox Sports press release.
FOX SPORTS’ 15th FALL CLASSIC FEATURES GIANTS & TIGERS IN FIRST WORLD SERIES MEETING
Game 1 Coverage Begins Wednesday, Oct. 24 at 7:30 PM ET from AT&T Park
Buck & McCarver Call Record 15th World Series Together
“FOX PHANTOM CAM” Added to Production Arsenal of 40 Cameras, 42 Mics
American Idol Winner Phillip Phillips Performs National Anthem at Game 1New York, NY – FOX Sports’ exclusive coverage of 108th Major League Baseball’s World Series begins Wednesday, Oct. 24 (7:30 PM ET), with Game 1 between the American League Champion Detroit Tigers and the National League Champion San Francisco Giants live from AT&T Park in San Francisco. The Tigers have been waiting to find out who they will face in the World Series since sweeping the New York Yankees last Thursday in Detroit. Justin Verlander, the Tigers’ well-rested ace takes the mound tomorrow night for Detroit while the Giants, just two days after winning NLCS Game 7 against the Cardinals, call on Barry Zito, to duplicate his commanding NLCS Game 5 performance. This marks the first time these two storied baseball franchises have met in a World Series.
Last season’s American Idol winner and singer-songwriter Phillip Phillips performs the National Anthem at Game 1 and the ceremonial first-pitch is delivered by Mario Barajas of the Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco. Following the bottom of the fifth inning of Game 1, the Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C) initiative invites all fans at AT&T Park to stand united and hold placards with the names of loved ones affected by cancer as part of a special in-game tribute to promote the importance of advancing the fight against cancer.
Play-by-play announcer Joe Buck and analyst Tim McCarver, MLB on FOX’s Emmy Award-winning broadcast team, call their record 15th World Series together. Each also sets individual benchmarks in World Series broadcasting with Buck calling the most Fall Classics by a play-by-play announcer with 15 and McCarver adding to his record-setting achievement of 23World Series behind the microphone. Making her World Series debut, Erin Andrews serves as a field reporter for each game alongside MLB on FOX and FOXSports.com senior MLB writer Ken Rosenthal, who works his seventh World Series for FOX. This year marks the network’s 17th straight as the television home for postseason baseball and the 2012 Fall Classic will be FOX’s 13th consecutive and 15th overall.
FOX Sports and MLB Network continue their pregame collaboration into the Fall Classic to bring fans the most complete postseason coverage. Outspoken catcher A.J. Pierzynski joins longtime FOX Sports and MLB Network broadcaster Matt Vasgersian alongside the insightful analysis of FOX Sports’ Eric Karros and MLB Network’s Harold Reynolds. Pregame and postgame coverage for the 2012 World Series on FOX originates on-site from AT&T Park in San Francisco and Comerica Park in Detroit.
During FOX Sports’ coverage of the NLCS, one of the most-talked about elements of the broadcast was FOX’s “X-MO” Camera, capturing up to 3,000 frames per second. For the World Series, the network raises the bar again with the unveiling of “FOX PHANTOM CAM”, capable of capturing up to 20,000 frames per second.
WORLD SERIES PRODUCTION FACTS:
- 40 total cameras set up at AT&T Park and Comerica Park in Detroit
- Three “X-MO” cameras, capturing up to 3,000 frames per second. These “X-MO” cameras are positioned in the middle of both the first and third baselines with the third camera shooting from tight centerfield
- Two “FOX PHANTOM CAM” cameras capable of shooting up to 20,000 frames per second. The “FOX PHANTOM CAM” is the most “hyper” motion cameras ever used to capture a baseball game. These cameras are positioned at low first and third base angles showing the bend of the bat and the compression of the ball as it makes contact.
- Eight Robotic cameras
- 42 microphones spread in the infield
- Several different manned and unmanned FOX parabolic microphones for bat cracks and outfield sound.
- For the first time ever in baseball, FOX Player Pointer, which identifies the base runners in real time with a graphic over their heads on the bases and tracks their movements
- Approximate crew of 150-200 production, technical and support personnel

Your NFL Week 6 Viewing Guide
Ok, let’s go over what’s happening in Week 6 in The League Where They Play For Pay.
Who’s off this week?
For Week 6, Carolina, Chicago, Jacksonville and New Orleans. All get the dreaded bye on Sunday.
Blackouts? What about the blackouts?
Well, Tampa Bay is blacked out which means the local CBS affiliate won’t be able to show Kansas City-Bucs (Marv Albert/Rich Gannon).
The Chargers avoided a blackout in San Diego and Los Angeles for Monday night.
Who has the doubleheader?
Fox does. One of the weeks it has just about the minimum amount of games, just five overall, three early games and two late.
So what’s going on with Fox on Sunday?
Originally off on Sunday, Joe Buck will pull a rare NFL/National League Championship Series doubleheader. He’ll call the New York Giants-San Francisco 49ers game at 4:25 p.m. ET with Troy Aikman and Pam Oliver, then head across town to call Game 1 of the NLCS between the St. Louis Cardinals and San Francisco Giants with Tim McCarver, Erin Andrews and Ken Rosenthal.
Thom Brennaman who was originally slated to call Giants-Niners has been reassigned to his regular announcing team with Brian Billick and Laura Okmin on Dallas-Baltimore at 1 p.m. Sam Rosen who was supposed to work that game with Billick and Okmin has Sunday off.
What are your Games of the Week?
For CBS’ regional games, I’ll take Indy at the New York Jets (Jim Nantz/Phil Simms) to see what Andrew Luck can pull this week and to watch if Mark Sanchez spits the bit. And for the 4:05 p.m. game, an intriguing New England-Seattle game (Ian Eagle/Dan Fouts) which might have been a candidate to be a flex game into primetime had this been eligible.
On Fox, we’ll pick Dallas at Baltimore (Thom Brennaman/Brian Billick/Laura Okmin) for the Ray Lewis opportunity to sack Tony Romo and of course, the rematch of last season’s NFC Championship, New York Giants at San Francisco (Joe Buck/Troy Aikman/Pam Oliver).
CBS doing anything special before or after its regional games?
Unlike Fox which has scheduled programming for several “singleheaders,” CBS has chosen to go dark at 1 p.m. or at 5 p.m., depending on the game in your area.
Anything else?
Not really. Just watch the games.
Joe Buck To Pull Rare NFL/NLCS Doubleheader For Fox
With the NFL on Fox feature game in San Francisco and Game 1 of the National League Championship Series also in the City by the Bay, Joe Buck will pull a rare announcing double on Sunday.
Buck will call the New York Giants at San Francisco 49ers game at Candlestick Park at 4:25 p.m. ET/1:25 PT and then head to AT&T Park to call Game 1 of the National League Championship Series between the St. Louis Cardinals and the San Francisco Giants. So not only is this a Football/Baseball doubleheader for Buck, it’s also a Giants doubleheader.
Fox Sports PR man Dan Bell tweeted the news this evening.
Tomorrow, our @buck will call both the #Giants #49ers @nflonfox game followed by #Cardinals #Giants NLCS Game 1 on FOX #FOXTOBERFEST
— Dan Bell (@danpbell) October 13, 2012
This had been discussed when San Francisco Giants got into the MLB Postseason. However, it seemed like the issue was going to be moot as the Washington Nationals took an early 6-0 lead in Game 5 of its National League Division Series against the Cards and it appeared the NLCS would start in DC, but as the Cards chipped away and then came back to earn a shocking 9-7 victory, the possibility of Buck calling both games in the Bay Area became more of a reality and then was confirmed tonight.
There have been doubles pulled by announcers before as ABC’s Keith Jackson did it for the ALCS and NLCS in 1978 and 1980, respectively, although they were not in the same city as Classic Sports TV and Media points out.
As Neil Best of Newsday points out, if Buck is late getting to NLCS Game 1 from Giants-49ers, Tim McCarver will start the contest calling it solo until Joe arrives at AT&T Park.
If Fox’s Joe Buck is delayed in arriving at AT&T Park in time for NLCS Game 1 from Giants-49ers game, Tim McCarver will start game solo.
— Neil Best (@sportswatch) October 14, 2012
Now that’s going to be quite interesting.
UPDATE, 10:10 p.m.: Just heard from Dan Bell from Fox. He tells me that Buck will ride a cable car from Candlestick to AT&T Park. I have a feeling there will be a lot of people on board riding with Buck to the NLCS.
