34th Annual Sports Emmy Awards Nominations Announced

Just received this from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, the full press release of the nominations for the 34th Annual Sports Emmy Awards.

NBC Sports Group received the most nominations with 58 followed by ESPN with 43 and Turner in third with 27.

Bob Costas was nominated yet again for Outstanding Studio Host along with Dan Patrick, James Brown, Ernie Johnson and Rich Eisen.

There were only four nominees for Outstanding Play-by-play, Mike Breen, Mike Emrick, Al Michaels and Jim Nantz.

Cris Collinsworth received another nomination for Outstanding Event Analyst. He’s joined by Ato Boldon of NBC Olympics, Jon Gruden, Jim Kaat and Mike Mayock.

Studio Analyst was full with Charles Barkley of TNT, Tony Dungy of NBC’s Football Night in America, CBS’ Boomer Esiason, MLB Network’s Harold Reynolds, Bill Ripken also from MLB Network and Kurt Warner of NFL Network.

New York, NY – March 20, 2013 – The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) today announced the nominees for the 34th Annual Sports Emmy® Awards.

More than 170 nominees were announced in 34 categories including Outstanding Live Sports Special, Live Series, Sports Documentary, Studio Show, Promotional Announcements, Play-by-Play Personality and Studio Analyst. The Awards will be given out at the prestigious Frederick P. Rose Hall, Home of Jazz at Lincoln Center located in the Time Warner Center on Tuesday, May 7th, 2013 in New York City.

Some Quick Monday Sports Media Thoughts

Haven’t done a sports media thoughts post in a while. Figured you’re owed one. Let’s do this in bullet form, of course.

• ESPN’s 30 for 30 series has been good since it started, but Sunday’s “Survive and Advance” documentary on the 1983 North Carolina State NCAA Championship team elevated it to something very special. Directed by Jonathan Hock and executive produced by the team’s point guard, Derek Whittenburg, the documentary chronicled the miracle NC State team that entered the ACC Tournament with 10 losses and needed to beat Wake Forest, North Carolina and Virginia to get to the NCAA Tournament and did. And then continued its run to the Final Four where it beat Georgia to advance to the National Championship Game against Phi Slamma Jama, Houston.

  There were interviews with several members of the team including Thurl Bailey, Whittenburg, Terry Gannon who is now a broadcaster for ESPN and NBC, Cozell McQueen and others. The only ones missing were Jim Valvano who died of cancer in 1993 and Lorenzo Charles who scored the winning basket who died in a bus accident in 2011. Director Hock captured the feeling of the magical run. As usual in the 30 for 30 films, no narrator, just sound bites and archival footage, but it works extremely well in this case.

  While the team comes off very well, the star of the documentary is Gannon who is very funny and weaves some great tales. His best story was his telling of taking a charge from Houston’s Clyde Drexler in the National Championship Game.

  The 30 for 30′s have been very good, but “Survive and Advance” is truly the best of the series to date. It’s not just a very good sports documentary, but one of the best documentaries I’ve seen in any category. There are a lot of things where ESPN has fallen short, but 30 for 30 is the network’s star. It’s quality television and if you have an opportunity to watch the re-airs later this week, by all means do so. You won’t be sorry.

• College basketball’s Championship Week gave us the opportunity to see some great basketball in the conference tournaments. It also allowed us to hear Bill Walton throughout the Pac-12 Tournament. Now, I don’t have the Pac-12 Network as DirecTV continues to keep it off its lineup, but thanks to the ESPN Family of Networks, viewers were able to hear some gems from the Big Red. Yes, Walton can go off on tangents, but they are so entertaining that I watched all three games that I normally may not have viewed. It’s hard to imagine that Walton had retired a few years ago due to chronic back pain and even considered suicide. Thankfully, Walton reconsidered and underwent a procedure to correct the pain. His return to the airwaves is the viewer’s gain.

  Kudos go to Dave Pasch for being a very good straight man and for also being patient when Walton went on his rants.

  I gathered quotage from Thursday’s quarterfinals, Friday’s semifinals and Saturday’s final. It’s good reading. You’ll definitely get a laugh.

• CBS’ NCAA Tournament Selection Show returned for the 32nd consecutive year on Sunday. The network has the selections down to a science, first the number one overall seed, the picks for each region, reaction shots from selected schools, an interview with the Selection Committee Chairman and analysis. One addition this year was the Perpetually Angry Doug Gottlieb.

  Already in a crowded studio with Greg Gumbel, Greg Anthony and Seth Davis, Gottlieb shoehorned his opinions and overpowered Anthony and Davis to the point where they had to interrupt the ESPN retread. I understand Gottlieb is fulfilling a dream by calling NCAA Tournament games, but the studio is not his strength. Gottlieb’s performance on Sunday is on par with Joe Montana’s horrendous performance in the NFL on NBC studio back in 1995. While Gottlieb did not look like a deer caught in the headlights like Montana did, he did not come off well. He looked angry. He pointed at the American people and he tried to cram too many opinions while trying to stir things up with Davis. It was not good television. I am afraid of what will happen when Gottlieb joins the CBS/Turner studio for the Sweet Sixteen and Elite Eight with Kenny Smith and Charles Barkley.

• Lastly, we expect an announcement on the SEC TV network next month. Conference commissioner Mike Slive told Yahoo’s Pat Forde that the league will make an official unveiling of the network sometime next month. The SEC already makes megabucks from CBS and ESPN in contracts that led other conferences to follow and lead to massive upheaval ending long standing rivalries. It’s expected that ESPN will partner in an SEC cable network similar to how Fox Sports partners with the Big Ten for its network.

  When the infrastructure is in place, the SEC will make a boatload of money and follow in the footsteps of the Big Ten Network in becoming a cash cow. And viewers who were getting used to watching the over the air SEC Network which replaced Raycom in syndicating third tier games, now will have to transition to seeing those events on cable.

  More upheaval is exactly what sports fan want.

Fox Sports San Diego To Air Full-Time on DirecTV Starting April 1

Saw this on the Fox Sports San Diego website this week. Some good news for DirecTV subscribers in San Diego, starting on April 1, Fox Sports San Diego will begin airing full-time. It means that no more of Padres games and then DirecTV pulls the signal, everything that FS San Diego airs will be on Channel 694. In anticipation of the launch, DirecTV will air a whole slew of Padres Spring Training games including one on Sunday. It’s one of eight games DirecTV will air from Fox Sports San Diego.

In addition to the Padres, Fox Sports San Diego picks up Los Angeles Clippers and Anaheim Ducks games from Fox Sports West and Prime Ticket. And as Fox Sports’ dispute with Time Warner Cable continues over the price per subscriber, it gives San Diegans an opportunity to watch the regional sports network full-time.

FOX Sports San Diego Launches Full-Time on DIRECTV April 1

Eight Spring Training Contests and Preview Show Also Made Available to DIRECTV Customers

San Diego – FOX Sports San Diego (FSSD) today announced the launch of their full-time regional sports network on DIRECTV beginning Monday, April 1, in time for the San Diego Padres’ first regular season game in New York.

DIRECTV first partnered with FOX Sports San Diego in April of 2012 providing live San Diego Padres telecasts, Padres Live pregame and postgame shows, first-run Padres related programming, and frequent Los Angeles Clippers and Anaheim Ducks games to their customers. Customers will now be able to enjoy everything the full-time regional sports network has to offer, including over 700 live sporting events, as well as both regional and national sports-related programming.

Prior to April 1, DIRECTV will make eight of the Padres’ ten spring training contests on FOX Sports San Diego available to their customers, as well as the first airing of FSSD’s Padres Season Preview Show, debuting March 22 at 6:00 PM.

Following is a list of Padres related programming available on DIRECTV prior to April 1.

Oh My! It’s The Return of The Linkage!

It’s been way too long since you’ve seen linkage on this site. This has been the main mission of Fang’s Bites since the beginning, but too often, I get roped into doing family stuff and it prevents me from getting on here until late.

Mike Reynolds at Multichannel News says tonight’s BCS Championship Game could set an all-time viewership record for ESPN and cable TV.

The extremely warped Anthony Crupi (he’ll even admit this) of Adweek writes that the NFL’s regular season ratings were down slightly from last year, but it delivers an audience unlike any other programming.

Natalie Zmuda of Ad Age says Pepsi wants to make you, yes you, part of its Super Bowl ad.

Sports Media Watch notes that the overnight rating for the Cincinnati-Houston NFL Wild Card Game on NBC was up from last year.

SMW says NBC’s nightcap of Vikings-Packers was down slightly from last year.

SMW tells us that Seattle-Washington had the third highest overnight for an NFL Wild Card game since 1999.

And for Indy-Baltimore on CBS, the overnight number was very good.

Some Quick Wednesday Sports Media Thoughts

Tuesday was an early Christmas for your humble blogger. Thanks to some Black Friday sales, I’ve been setting up a new iPad and a new laptop computer, so the posts were rather slim on Tuesday. To make up for that minimal posting, I’ll write some sports media thoughts and unlike the last sports media thoughts post where I expanded on things, I’ll do some quick hits. As usual, they come to you in bullet form.

• CBS Sports Radio appears to be on its way to providing a full 24 hour weekday schedule when it launches on January 2. I’m happy to see that former ESPN’er Dana Jacobsen will be part of the morning drive show along with Brandon Tierney and Tiki Barber. I’m not sure if Tiki will be able to provide much based on his past performance on NBC, but with Tierney and Jacobsen doing most of the heavy lifting, the show could be successful. I’m looking forward to hearing the first few weeks.
• On Tuesday, the rumors of Fox Sports potentially purchasing regional sports network Sports Time Ohio surfaced once again. Since last year, there have been rumblings that STO would be bought out by Fox. STO currently owns the TV rights to the Cleveland MLB team, but hasn’t been able to expand upon that portfolio. Ohio Media Watch’s Twitter account was burning up with speculation on STO. Should this come to fruition, this could be the third MLB team that Fox Sports could secure after the New York Yankees last week and reportedly the Los Angeles Dodgers which could close this week. We’ll keep you posted on this story.
• Still wondering when DirecTV will begin carrying Pac-12 Network and Comcast SportsNet Houston. Thus far, the satellite provider has remained stubborn in its refusal to pick up either channel. While DirecTV felt the pressure to pick up Time Warner Cable SportsNet for Los Angeles Lakers games, it appears to be in no hurry to carry Pac-12 Network or CSN Houston despite fan complaints. In these disputes, the fans are always caught in the middle.
• MLB Network’s Hot Stove new morning show format is a welcome addition to sports television. Matt Vasgersian and Harold Reynolds are good as co-hosts. Neither have worn suits and ties as MLB Network tries to be less formal with the show. Alana Rizzo has been good as the update anchor. Having insider Ken Rosenthal on the show is a nice touch. And during Thanksgiving Week, it was good to see Keith Olbermann co-hosting the show with fellow former ESPN’er Brian Kenny. Here’s hoping that MLB Network could make this a permanent addition during the MLB season, perhaps under a different name.
• After ESPN saw the ratings for Notre Dame-USC on Saturday, you knew network executives were chomping at the bit thinking about the potential ratings for the BCS Championship Game. As Notre Dame will face the winner of the SEC, the numbers for the college football championship come January will be huge. Then again, I’m probably telling you something you already know.

DirecTV Picks Up Time Warner Cable SportsNet

Finally, Los Angeles Lakers fans will have access to their favorite team on DirecTV. In an agreement announced on Thursday, DirecTV tweeted what Lakers fans have wanted to hear ever since the season began, that it will carry Time Warner Cable SportsNet starting tonight and the first game on the satellite provider will be seen Friday night.

We have an agreement to carry #TWCSportsNet on Ch: 691 in time for the next game (Friday 11/16).

The agreement includes both the English and Spanish language channels.

DirecTV had balked at the Time Warner asking price of $3.95 per subscriber, but apparently found common ground to start carrying the channels. Dish Network remains as the last major holdout for Time Warner SportsNet.

DirecTV continues to block viewers from the Pac-12 Networks and Comcast SportsNet Houston. We’ll see how long it takes for the satellite provider to continue its holdout for both entities.

New local homes of Los Angeles Lakers, LA Galaxy and Los Angeles Sparks games now provided to DIRECTV customers

EL SEGUNDO, CA (November 15, 2012) – DIRECTV will launch Time Warner Cable SportsNet and Time Warner Cable Deportes today for all Southern California customers. These networks are the local TV homes for Los Angeles Lakers, LA Galaxy and Los Angeles Sparks games, as well as in-depth, dedicated, team-focused programming.

Time Warner Cable SportsNet will be available for DIRECTV customers on channel 691 throughout Southern California (Los Angeles, San Diego, Bakersfield and parts of Fresno) as well as Santa Barbara and Ventura counties, Las Vegas and Hawaii. Time Warner Cable Deportes will be available on channel 458.

Some Monday Sports Media Thoughts

Time to provide some sports media thoughts as we begin another workweek. Of course, they will be in bullet form.

• What was once the place for sports networks to convene to put pressure on cable has suddenly become the place to hold out. DirecTV was once the provider to pick up sports networks before anyone else. It was one of the first providers in the country to pick up NFL Network, the Big Ten Network, the mtn., CBS Sports Network (when it was known as CSTV then CBS College Sports), Outdoor Life Network and others. Now, it has become a holdout like Time Warner Cable which was the last major cable provider to pick up NFL Network and still refuses to carry MASN in North Carolina.

  Now, DirecTV has refused to pick up the Pac-12 Networks and Time Warner SportsNet citing fiscal responsibility. It has not talked with the Pac-12 lately and has no new talks scheduled for Time Warner, thus preventing West Coast fans from seeing college sports and the Los Angeles Lakers. DirecTV says it does not want to pick up all of the Pac-12 Networks (it has seven overall) and wants to charge an extra fee for anyone who wants to watch it. And the satellite provider is balking at Time Warner’s price per subscriber ($3.95) for the Lakers channel.

  DirecTV appears to have drawn its line in the sand. The Athletic Director at Cal-Berkeley changed her TV subscription from DirecTV to Comcast so she can watch Pac-12 Network and the Lakers training facility changed its subscription from DirecTV to Time Warner Cable as ESPN LA’s Arash Markazi tweeted on Sunday.

  Not a great sign that the Lakers’ practice facility switched to TWC from DirecTV this week. They probably wouldn’t if a deal was imminent.

  So whenever DirecTV decides to pick either or both of the channels, it could very well be at its own terms.

  Joe Flint of the Los Angeles Times reports that Cox Cable is the latest to agree to carry Time Warner SportsNet’s English and Spanish channels. It leaves DirecTV and Dish as the last remaining holdouts and of those two, only DirecTV would probably pick up TWSN as Dish has not been willing to carry sports networks as freely as DirecTV.

• NFL Network’s A Football Life has scored touchdowns in each and all of its episodes this season. From the season premiere on Ray Lewis to the look at the final year of the Cleveland Browns 1.0 to the Los Angeles Rams Fearsome Foursome to the latest edition on Chris Spielman, the documentaries from NFL Films have been of high quality. This all began last year when it spent one season with Patriots coach Bill Belichick and showed viewers some humanity behind the man inside the hoodie.

  The access NFL Films has received with each of its subjects, plus the archival footage it has culled through its own library or through news footage or personal home movies, A Football Life has become appointment viewing. The next one on coach Jimmy Johnson during his Dallas years should prove to be quite compelling television.

• There’s been 10 weeks of the college football season and I can now provide a review of the Fox College Saturday pregame show. I’ve been waiting for improvement since Week 2 (Week 1 was pre-empted in most of the country by a Fox Saturday Baseball overrun), but it hasn’t been there. Erin Andrews is not suited to be a studio host. She’s been better on the sidelines, although the MLB Postseason in October wasn’t her best work.

  There is no chemistry between Erin and analysts Eddie George and Joey Harrington. They struggle to get through highlights and there’s doesn’t appear to be any real energy. Oddly, when Patrick O’Neal is teamed with George and Harrington on FX, they have much better chemistry and energy.

  I have a feeling Fox will try this studio team for one more season before making any changes. Fox has too much money invested in Andrews to take her off the show after one season, however, the show remains a train wreck.

• Heard Friend of Fang’s Bites, Jen Royle on WEEI in Boston auditioning last week to become the update anchor for the station’s morning show, Dennis & Callahan. I felt she had the best chemistry among all those trying out. Here’s hoping she gets a gig out of it.
• I wish there was a way to get KT Tunstall’s “Suddenly I See” off ads and TV shows. This song is the bane of my existence. And as it was pointed out on the old “Best Week Ever” on VH1 that it was overused on a slew of ABC’s shows as a female empowerment song in 2006. And don’t ask me why I can remember these references off the top of my head.

  As I digress, if the song can be removed from commercials and movies, it would make me very happy.

Ok, I’m done.

Finally, The Official Press Release on Dan Patrick Show Moving to NBC Sports Network

This in from NBC Sports Group, the official announcement of Dan Patrick Show moving to NBC Sports Network on Monday. The show will air in its entirety, live from 9 a.m. until noon ET. A “Best of” one-hour version will air at 4 p.m. ET.

DirecTV which owns both the TV and radio version of the DP Show will continue to air it on the Audience Network. In addition to the DP Show moving under the auspices of the Peacock, NBC Sports Network moves from DirecTV’s Sports Pack to its basic package to Channel 220. It had been in the 600′s dating back to when it was known as Versus and Outdoor Life Network before that.

NEW YORK – November 4, 2012 – NBC Sports Network has acquired multi-year rights from DIRECTV to air The Dan Patrick Show, the renowned sports television show and syndicated radio program starring Football Night in America co-host Dan Patrick. The Dan Patrick Show will debut on NBC Sports Network tomorrow and air weekdays from 9 a.m.–Noon ET. A “Best Of” version will air weekday afternoons from 4-5 p.m. ET on NBC Sports Network

To coincide with the debut of the show tomorrow, NBC Sports Network will relocate to Channel 220 (from Channel 603) on DIRECTV, which is adjacent to other national sports channels. DIRECTV owns and operates The Dan Patrick Show, which airs daily on DIRECTV’s exclusive Audience Network as well.

The Dan Patrick Show will follow The ‘Lights, NBC Sports Network’s new highlights show that launched this summer. DirecTV Moves NBC Sports Network To Basic From The Sports Pack

In a surprise move, DirecTV has quietly moved NBC Sports Network from the dreaded sports tier known as the Sports Pack to its basic package on Channel 220.

When DirecTV and its previous incarnation known as Versus was removed from the satellite provider in 2010, this was one of the major bones of contention between the two sides. Comcast wanted off the Sports Pack, but DirecTV wanted to keep it there. So when Versus returned in early 2011, it remained on the Sports Pack at Channel 603.

While the move had been rumored and in the works for quite some time, it finally happened today. In fact this morning, when I was putting together the Viewing Picks for Monday, NBC Sports Network was still on 603.

The move was announced in a tweet by Pro Football Talk.

Attention DirecTV customers . . . NBC Sports Network is now on channel 220.That is all.

Dan Patrick Finally Makes Announcement About Show’s Home

After numerous false starts, Dan Patrick finally made the long-awaited announcement on where the the TV portion of his radio show will be aired. Yes, it’s been confirmed by Dan himself that the show will be airing live every morning on NBC Sports Network from 9 a.m. – noon ET starting next Monday, November 5. He made the announcement at the beginning of his show thus morning.

Fang’s Bites learned last August that NBC was negotiating with DirecTV to become the cable home of the Dan Patrick Show. The show was distributed on Fox Sports Net from 2010 through mid-October.

The radio show continues to be syndicated through Fox Sports Radio.

Dan Patrick Show To Debut on NBC Sports Network Next Wednesday

It’s finally official. Paul “Paulie” Pabst, Executive Producer of the Dan Patrick Show made the announcement just minutes ago.

John Ourand of Sports Business Journal says the show will begin airing on Halloween Wednesday, October 24 (why did I think next week was Halloween?).

Fang’s Bites learned back in August that NBC had been negotiating with DirecTV to carry the show and the move finally came to fruition today. Fox Sports Net had been carrying the TV simulcast for two years and that came to an end this week.

DirecTV’s Audience Network will continue to originate the show from Dan’s Mancave in Milford, CT and provide the production for NBC Sports Network.

UPDATE, 9;35 p.m.: NBC Sports Network will not only pick up The Dan Patrick Show from 9 a.m. to noon ET, it will also air The Box Score, the wrap-up show hosted by Casey Geraghty with the Danettes, Paul Pabst, Seton O’Connor, Fritzy and McLovin’ meaning the DP Show block will go from 9 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. ET. The Box Score had been previously exclusive to DirecTV and DanPatrick.com.

UPDATE, 10/23/12: Dan says Paulie jumped the gun with his tweet. It now appears that the Dan Patrick Show will make its debut on Monday, October 29 on NBC Sports Network at 9 a.m. ET

Dan Patrick Show Headed For NBC Sports Network

After announcing this week that the Dan Patrick Show will no longer be aired on Fox Sports Net, it’s expected that the TV simulcast of the Fox Sports Radio program will be headed to NBC Sports Network. The official announcement will be made Thursday morning.

As of Wednesday, Fox Sports Net stopped airing Dan Patrick. In the interim, FSN will air various college sports and soccer replays to fill the 9 a.m.-noon ET hole left behind by DP’s departure.

Fang’s Bites learned that NBC Sports Group had been negotiating with DirecTV, the distributor of the Dan Patrick Show, since the summer. Back in July, the Comcast SportsNet affiliates dropped all FSN programming, a move that was related to the Dan Patrick talks. The strategy by NBC to lure DP’s show was to establish a firm original sports programming block from 6 a.m. to noon on NBCSN.

The first part of the morning strategy was “The ‘Lights,” the no-frills highlights show that has been airing from 6 a.m. until 9 a.m. since the conclusion of the 2012 Olympics. The second piece of the puzzle is Dan Patrick. A possible third piece could be a morning show that would be a vehicle for Michelle Beadle at 8 a.m. Beadle told Awful Announcing that her NBCSN show could launch sometime in January 2013.

Currently, the time after “The ‘Lights” has been filled with various hunting, fishing and other outdoors shows, something NBC would like to phase out. With Dan Patrick, not only does his show fill three hours of programming, it gives NBC Sports Network some much needed credibility.

Fox Sports Net To End Dan Patrick Show Simulcast Today

Announced by Dan Patrick today on his nationally syndicated radio show and confirmed to Sports Business Journal’s John Ourand, Fox Sports Net will no longer be airing the television simulcast.

While the show will continue to originate through DirecTV, a new cable distributor will be announced soon.

Sources tell Fang’s Bites that NBC Sports Group has been negotiating over the summer to pick up the show for NBC Sports Network.

Patrick says a new distributor will be announced in the coming days.
