Sports Media Weekly Podcast No. 45 – Bob Rathbun

by , under Bob Rathbun, Podcast, Sports Media Weekly

Another edition of the Sports Media Weekly Podcast where Keith Thibault of the Sports Media Journal and myself discuss the latest and greatest in sports media news. In addition, we have a guest and this week, it’s the great voice of SEC football and ACC basketball for Fox Sports South/SportSouth and the Atlanta Hawks for the same two companies, Bob Rathbun.

As always, Keith talked about the news of the week and we began by discussing the boring Brett Favre story which rears its ugly head every year at this time. We talked about how bored we are and how tired of how the media covers the story. Then we talked about HBO’s Hard Knocks and how former Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Tony Dungy dislikes the profanity-laced tirades put forth by New York Jets coach Rex Ryan.

We then talk about how fed up we are of reporters behaving badly, most notably Jim Gray who seemingly finds himself as the center of attention in the stories he reports.

The next topic is the two media members who got thrown out of the Denver Broncos locker after asking backup quarterback Tim Tebow for an autograph in the locker room after an NFL preseason game Sunday in Cincinnati.

Finally, we talk about Renee Gork’s firing from an Arkansas radio station after she wore a Florida hat to an Arkansas press conference.

As mentioned, our guest is multiple sport play-by-play man Bob Rathbun of Fox Sports South/SportSouth.

Courtesy: Christopher Bryne: Eye on Sports Media

We talk with Bob about his Rhode Island background, his second year of calling SEC football for Fox Sports South and the other Fox Sports regional networks and we also talk about his calling the Atlanta Hawks.

We touch upon his experience at the Detroit Tigers when he and Rick Rizzs had to replace legendary announcers Ernie Harwell and Paul Carey in the early 1990′s.

And we ask Bob about the differences in calling baseball and basketball.

A great podcast as Bob can certainly tell some great stories. Find the podcast on iTunes by searching for Sports Media Journal or you can find it
