Let’s provide you with viewership numbers for the Olympics in the UK. Found this from the BBC’s Media Centre website. You may not find this interesting, but I always find viewership numbers from other countries for the same event we’re watching in the States fascinating. I’m just a media wonk.
Anyway, for yesterday’s Super Saturday at the London Olympics, a huge day where Team GB won three gold medals in track & field as well as golds in rowing and cycling, BBC saw huge numbers.
The numbers kept building as the day went along from 5.7 million viewers for the gold medal winning women’s Lightweight Double Sculls team to 9.2 million for the Great Britain women’s cycling team pursuit win over the United States to 16.2 million for Jessica Ennis’ stunning win in the Heptathlon that captured the nation’s imagination and finally 17.1 million for Mo Farah’s gold medal in the men’s 10,000 meters.

Copeland and Hosking gold peaks at 5.7m
- The Women’s lightweight double-sculls duo of Katherine Copeland and Sophie Hosking drew a peak audience of 5.7m as they claimed gold. The audience peaked at 12:00 across BBC One and BBC Olympics 18
4.6m peak for the Men’s 100m Heats
- The Men’s 100m Heats peaked at 4.6m at 13:10 across BBC Three and BBC Olympics 1 (3.5m peak on BBC Three)
Coxless Men’s Four gold draws a peak of 4.4m
- There was also gold for the Coxless Men’s Four, which drew an audience of 4.9m at 11:35 across BBC One and BBC Olympics 18
BBC Sport Online still going strong
- Another very strong day for BBC Sport Online with 7.4m UK browsers and 9.6m Global browsers
