Fang’s Bites Podcast No. 8 — Olympics Wrap-Up: Bill Voth & Andrew Catalon

In this all-Syracuse alumni edition, we have our first repeat guest on the Fang’s Bites podcast and the Voice of Olympic Curling.

We wrap up the Olympics with Bill Voth, head of Spiracle Media and an Olympics fan, and Andrew Catalon of NBC Olympics and CBS Sports.

With Bill, we discuss the following:

  • How the Olympics progressed from huge security concerns to being one of the safest Games.
  • NBC’s coverage
  • How NBC has to be pleased with the primetime ratings despite it being just a tick over Turin’s numbers.
  • How NBC handled the Bob Costas red-eye situation and Matt Lauer and Meredith Vieira did as his replacements.
  • Did NBC do the right thing with Christin Cooper’s questioning of Bode Miller?

And with Andrew, we talked about:

  • His original concerns about security and how Andrew felt safe as the Olympics progressed.
  • His calling of curling and how the Russian crowds didn’t know how quite to cheer.
  • How he enjoys calling the sport.
  • If the American failure to medal this year will hurt curling’s progress going forward in future Olympics.
  • Andrew’s reaction to being named to the CBS/Turner NCAA Tournament announcing team.

Overall, it’s 49 minutes and 16 seconds of interesting interviews.

I also have some thoughts on a good friend, Amanda Rykoff who is opening a new chapter in her life.

All that and more in the eighth edition of the Fang’s Bites podcast. You can find it on iTunes by searching for “Fang’s Bites” or you go to the podcast page, or you can listen right here.
