Fang’s Bites Podcast No. 9 — Glenn Ordway, Tom Hoffarth and Verne Lundquist

Time for another edition of the Fang’s Bites podcast. This one is over one hour, but stick with it and you’ll find it rewarding, I really hope you do.

The first guest is Glenn Ordway, formerly of Boston sports radio station WEEI and who’s starting a new online venture called “Sports Talk Boston.” It will be the home of “Big Show Unfiltered” which is an incarnation of his old “The Big Show with the Big O” on WEEI. Glenn and I discussed the following:

  • Why he’s going online instead of returning to terrestrial radio.
  • What is the future of online or mobile radio.
  • Where you can find his show in addition to the new site.
  • If terrestrial radio can adjust to the changing digital world.
  • And where he sees his site in two years.

Next, sports media writer Tom Hoffarth of the Los Angeles Daily News talks about the latest developments with new regional sports network SportsNet LA which launched last month. Among the topics:

  • Why SoCal cable and satellite providers are slow to pick up the new channel?
  • Did the Los Angeles Dodgers miscalculate in going all-in with Time Warner Cable and not partnering with another team?
  • Is SportsNet LA too expensive?
  • Will DirecTV pick up SportsNet LA?
  • Is Time Warner bundling SportsNet LA with its other RSN, Time Warner Cable SportsNet Los Angeles?
  • Will DirecTV ever pick up Pac-12 Networks?

Our last guest for this week is Uncle Verne Lundquist of CBS Sports. With the NCAA Tournament just ahead, we talk with Verne about various subjects:

  • His 15-year partnership with Bill Raftery.
  • His familiarity and friendship.
  • How the partnership actually began in the early 1980’s.
  • Verne’s ascent to the network level through the old North American Soccer League and working with sportscasting legend Jim McKay.
  • How writing is an underrated skill in television.
  • How Verne joined the SEC on CBS.
  • How rabid fans are in the South.
  • Covering the phenomena of Tim Tebow and Johnny Manziel.
  • The familiarity of the SEC on CBS crew with the conference coaches.
  • Some of the interesting places Verne and his wife have visited over the years.
  • Cruise travel tips from Uncle Verne.

And interesting podcast if I do say so myself. Subscribe to the podcast on iTunes by searching for “Fang’s Bites” or you can find it on Podcast Garden right here. You can listen right now here.
