Some Overdue Sports Media Thoughts

You’re owed some sports media thoughts. I actually have some writer’s block thinking of material, but I’m forcing myself to put some thoughts down otherwise I’ll keep dragging this out. As usual, the thoughts come in bullet form.

  • First, why is MLB taking so long on deciding for a rights holder for its Wild Card Round? We know tht there will be extra Wild Cards this season, however, after a turner Sports’ exclusive negotiating period ended, MLB began shopping around the rights. There’s no shortage of interest. We know ESPN, Fox and MLB Network along with Turner are candidates. Yet, MLB seems to be dragging its feet here. What’s the holdup?

Let’s get a deal done. Besides, the winning network would probably like to start putting production and announcing teams in place. Wars have been resolved in less time.

  • The announcement last month that NBC would put all Olympic events live online is welcomed by your humble blogger. I’ve complained in 2008 and 2010 over NBC’s incessant and maddening tape delays during the Olympics. Now with the development that everything will be available for those who can’t wait until primetime to watch the Games’ glamour events, there’s a way for watch during the day. And for those events that will be packaged for primetime, you can watch online, but won’t be able to see it archived until it airs on NBC.

I can definitely live with that.

More thoughts later in the week.
