Pyeongchang Will Host The 2018 Winter Olympics

Just announced by International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge, Pyeongchang, South Korea will be the host of the 2018 Winter Olympics. What does this mean? NBC will air the Games. With a 14 hour time difference between Pyeongchang and New York, there could be some live coverage in primetime of some events. A lot of events will occur during the overnight and early morning hours in the United States. It will be interesting to see how NBC will cover these Games. The last Olympics in Asia were the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano which CBS aired. The network chose to delay many events, but did air the men’s downhill live in primetime which gave us some great television.

We’ll see what transpires with the planning and what NBC will announce in the coming years. In the meantime, congratulations to Pyeongchang. It was the third time the city had bid for the Winter Olympics and it certainly was the charm.

Only one ballot was required to be cast. Pyeongchang was the overwhelming winner with 63 votes over Munich, Germany which was second with 25 votes. Annecy, France could only garner 7 votes.
