NESN gave Jack Edwards the opportunity to make a final comment after the Boston Bruins win in overtime over the Montreal Canadiens to take the NHL Eastern Conference Quarterfinal series in seven games. Yet, I’m still trying to figure out what he’s saying. Jack not only looks nuts, but he’s mincing his metaphors comparing the Bruins win to the Boston Tea Party. At least I think he’s comparing the win to that. This is not the first time he’s compared a Bruins win to the American Revolution.
Anyway, you watch and try to figure this out.
Totally nuts.
And now we have the complete transcript of his nutty comments.
“As I was driving from the former seat of all NHL power, Montreal, through the free and independent states of Vermont, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts today, it struck me what an odd thing royalty is.
“Royalty in modern times is something that is perpetuated by those who didn’t actually make those great conquering achievements that established their reigns, but rather those who find themselves, because of a certain location in history and an accident of birth, to be in a position to ‘carry on a tradition.’
“Yet, those ‘royals’ sit there on their shiny thrones and primp in their hand mirrors and try to dictate morality according to them, about how you can dive, or how you should play, or how you shouldn’t run a player into the center glass.
“And the rest of us, those poor filthy masses, are just supposed to take it.
“Well, a couple of hundred years ago, a bunch of rowdy radicals charged out of some Boston bars, went down to the dock, and dumped the King’s tea into the salty sea.
“And in doing that, it struck a chord that rings true even today, that when confronted when imperious conceit, fighting the good fight is not only the right thing to do, it can be a heck of a lot of fun.
“And who has more fun than us?”
What?

Wow….bitter much? I'm going to go out on a limb here, and say that this goof has an issue with the Habs and their place in hockey history??
Pretty hilarious that the homer broadcaster of a Boston sports team would seem to constantly point out the perceived arrogance of another team and its fans…take a look in the mirror, chief!
Nice that he still thing Pacioretty was faking it or something. Anyone know if Jack was yelling at Cam Neely to "get up" after his career was highjacked by Ulf Samuelson?
As a Boston fan, I know there are plenty of arrogant Red Sox and Patriots fans. I don't think that applies to too many Bruins fans though, despite the comment above. Edwards' rant is hilarious – anyone taking it too seriously should probably take a deep breath and enjoy Edwards' gift of entertainment. He is spot on in coming down on the Canadiens' (and especially some of their more vocal fans') self-entitlement and dictatorial approach to how hockey "should be played" and that's all anyone should really take away from this. It's a ridiculous analogy of course, but therein lies the fun.
I would agree that there are plenty of arrogant Canadiens fans around. And not all from Montreal either. On the other hand, when you have won about a quarter of all Stanley Cups handed, I would suggest it would lead to a bit of arrogance.
Seriously though. I've been a police officer 29 years, and have dealt with some real goofballs, of every stripe, sexual orientation, national origin, etc. But I've heard THOUSANDS of Habs fans called 911 and wanted Chara ARRESTED! Edwards is TRYING albeit, strangely to put our (Bruins fans), ideas into some cohesive perspective. The bottom line though is, WHAT ARE YOU GONNA WATCH NOW? You're going to watch THE BRUINS.
Edwards is an idiot – Montreal leads their playoff record 24-9 over the Bruins, and their last "meaningful" playoff series win over the Habs was in 1992, when the Bruins went on to lose in the cup finals (again). This was a first round win of a mediocre team over a bad team, which was supposed to happen quicker than 7 1/2 games. The biggest difference between the two teams, Jack, is that the Bruins raise first place and divisonal banners in their building – the Canadians only allow Stanley Cup banners to be raised. Settle down Jack, before you give yourself a heart attack, you moron.
Steve, try telling the Canadiens players this wasn't a "meaningful" series. I'm sure they'd agree with you. Please get over yourself.
So that is what happened to Jack Edwards. I always wondered what happened to the guy that got the worst gigs that ESPN had to offer in the 90s like dart championships and curling. I guess when they stopped putting those sports one he lost his niche.
