The Boston Celtics’ 109-96 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers – part of an NBA Sunday Showcase doubleheader on ABC Jan. 30 – delivered a 5.0 overnight rating, tying a Lakers/Cleveland Cavaliers broadcast (Feb. 8, 2009) as the highest-rated, non-Christmas Day, NBA regular-season game ever on ABC. This year’s Celtics/Lakers matchup surpassed the comparable game last season – Lakers at Celtics, which posted a 4.4 rating – by 14 percent. In Boston, the game delivered a 10.3 metered market rating to become the highest-rated, non-Christmas Day, NBA regular-season game ever on ABC. The 11.1 rating in Los Angeles marked the second highest-rated, non-Christmas Day, NBA regular-season game on ABC.
Preceding the Celtics/Lakers showdown, the game between the Oklahoma City Thunder and Miami Heat generated a 3.1 overnight rating, an increase of 48 percent compared to last year’s Denver/San Antonio broadcast (2.1 overnight). In Oklahoma City, the game garnered an 11.1 metered market rating, the best rating for a NBA regular-season game on ABC locally. The game posted a 6.8 metered market rating in Miami.
