This Weekend Is Dedicated to Aisha

by , under Personal note

Who’s Aisha? This is Aisha.

She’s on the cover of this week’s Time. And it’s part of a story on what women have to go through as the Taliban continues to have influence in Afghanistan. Read it and if you ever had doubts about the Taliban, you won’t anymore.

Aisha had her nose and ears cut off after she fled an abusive husband. The Taliban caught her and then ordered this harsh sentence. Aisha is in a shelter in Kabul, the Afghanistan capital and will be leaving for the United States to get surgery.

Time’s editor explains why he put Aisha on the cover this week and I’ll post a video of Time photographer Jodi Bieber talking about her decision to take the photographs of Aisha.

I’ll be back tomorrow. And I hope you’ll take a moment to read the Time stories.

The First Fang’s Bites Mailbag

by , under ABC, ACC, Big Ten Network, CBS Sports, College Football, ESPN, FSN, Mailbag, Marv Albert, NASCAR, NCAA Tournament, The Open Championship, Turner Sports

Time to answer your sports media questions. Thanks to all who sent e-mails. Let’s make this a regular feature and I hope to do this every two or three months. And down the road, I hope to offer DVD’s, books and other swag. I don’t have anything for this mailbag, but I hope to have stuff in line for the future. Let’s get to your questions.

With the new NCAA Men’s Basketball TV contract between CBS and TBS for March Madness, do you they will keep the same announcing teams as previous years or will we see someone like Marv Albert calling tournament games? I think all 8 announcing teams CBS has now is fine. Also with ESPN’s contract with the ACC does that mean FOX Sports Net is done with their Sunday night hoops telecast? I love Gminski and Brando.

John S.
Mantua, NJ

Hi John. From what I’ve heard, CBS and Turner will decide on announcing teams sometime soon. I suspect that you’ll see the four regional final teams for CBS, Jim Nantz-Clark Kellogg; Gus Johnson-Len Elmore; Dick Enberg’s replacement-Jay Bilas; and Verne Lundquist-Bill Rafery. Who Turner will hire is anyone’s guess. Ian Eagle who did work on TNT this past NBA postseason might move over to Turner as would Kevin Harlan who’s TNT’s NBA guy anyway. I doubt Marv would call tournament games, but you never know.

As far as the ACC Sunday Night Hoops are concerned, I know the coaches all hated the Sunday night games. They have told ACC Commissioner John Swofford as much. Under the new ESPN contract that takes effect in 2011-12, ESPNU gets a Sunday game, but I think it will be earlier in the afternoon, although ESPN could call for it to be played at let’s say, 4 p.m. ET. And unless ESPN decides to sell a few games, Fox Sports Net is done after this coming season.

I’ve got a Sports Media question for you –
Since ABC Sports in now ESPN on ABC, do ABC and ESPN actually compete against each other?  Let’s say MLB rights fee are up and they want their playoff games on broadcast (ABC) not cable (ESPN); do ESPN and ABC compete against each other like they used to or MLB agrees with ESPN and they can decide what network it airs on?  What makes ESPN negotiate in good faith on the half of ABC, considering ESPN wants marquee events?
Scott Y.
Cincinnati, Ohio

No, up until the BCS and Open Championship, ESPN would have ABC in mind to compliment coverage. But as we have seen in the last two years, ESPN has decided to keep events for itself (BCS and Open Championship) and this year, chose to cut the number of NASCAR Sprint Cup races on ABC from 11 to 3. However, ABC affiliates are screaming over the lack of sports on the network and this may force ESPN’s hand in the future especially with the Olympics, MLB and NBA bidding all coming up. The ABC affiliates are the ones that are keeping ESPN in line and preventing the Alleged Worldwide Leader from hoarding everything. In addition, the NBA and MLB would still want to have their finals on network TV as opposed to cable. But the day of a major final on cable is coming.

Hi Ken

What do you think about ESPN’s descision to go all cable for the Open Championship and the Brickyard 400? I think it could be the reason ratings went down for both events. To me both events did not feel as special this year than in years past when they were on ABC.

Jamie L
Hampton CT

A related question to the one from Scott. I agree that having those events on cable prevented casual fans from finding them. In addition, I was still used to turning on ABC early Sunday morning for the final round of the Open Championship this year, but I’ll be weaned off that next year. Having no suspense hurt the Open more than being on cable. NASCAR’s ratings have been down all year so even had the event been on ABC, not much more could be done on viewership. Certainly being on cable did not help the ratings.

- Do you have a favorite sport to watch on television? What about a favorite broadcaster? Favorite non-sports show?

- What do you think is the biggest misconception about sports media?

- Ultimately, do you think the encroaching columnists on ESPN has hurt the product? They now show more programs with commentators (Around the Horn, Cold Pizza) as opposed to straight sports, even if Pardon The Interruption is still pretty good.

Steve G.
North Kingstown, RI

A Rhode Island homey! And from North Kingstown to boot! Well, let me answer the questions in order.

My favorite sport to watch is baseball and Vin Scully is my favorite broadcaster. And he’s done more than baseball. Old school fans will remember he called the NFL for CBS and also did the PGA for both CBS and NBC.

With 24 and Lost gone, my favorite non-sports shows currently are Mad Men, My Boys and the Amazing Race.

The biggest misconception. That’s a tough one. One misconception is that some reporters are as passionate as the fans. That’s not true. It’s a job. Another is that people in the sports media don’t have agendas. Even I have an agenda, but I’m not telling what that is. ;-)

And I agree that the commentary shows like Around the Horn and even the Sports Reporters have gone over the top. You have columnists and sports writers mugging for the camera. Now that could be the program over the personality, but Skip Bayless and Woody Paige have become totally unwatchable and unlikable. I used to enjoy reading them, but after seeing and hearing them, I don’t anymore.

Ken,

I’ve just starting reading the blog so I apologize if my question has already been answered.

I’m fairly new to the sports journalism and media world (<2 years), but I’ve worked my way from casual sports blogger to (hopefully) being credentialed for my local team this upcoming season. I’d love to start exploring other avenues in an attempt to bring more exposure to not only myself, but also the website I write for. Does it make more sense to invest time in reaching out to radio shows and other outlets, or simply be patient and casually interact while covering sporting events and let my work speak for itself? I don’t want to spend countless hours “cold-calling” via email if there’s a more efficient strategy you’ve learned from experience. Any other advice for an up-and-coming sports journalist in my position would certainly be appreciated.

Thanks,
Mike C.

Pittsburgh

Hi Mike. Thanks for the question. You can do a little of both. You can find one of the hosts or producers and start exchanging e-mails and if he doesn’t blow you off, tell him the blog you write for, let him know you’re available as a guest. You can also let people know on your blog that you’re available to go on radio shows to talk about your team. I don’t know what it’s like in Pittsburgh if sports radio shows depend on bloggers as guests, it’s not the case here in New England. Certainly sending an e-mail doesn’t hurt. The least the host or producer can do is say no. But if you get a positive response, you have something to build on.

This only loosely touches sports media, but I was wondering if you could shed any light on the upcoming Minnesota-Texas college football series that was canceled due to a dispute over video rights. Curious what specifically the schools would have not seen eye-to-eye on (especially after agreement had already been made)? Is this related to Texas trying to start its own network and Gophers not wanting game to be aired on that, Horns wanting a cut of BTN or ESPN money, or what?

Thanks!
Tim C
.

There’s no doubt that Texas which now has control of its TV rights thanks to its increased power in the Big 12 wanted a bigger piece of the pie when the series was to be played at TCF Bank Stadium in Minnesota. In college football, the home team or conference controls the rights. For the game at Minnesota, the rights revert to the Big Ten Network. At Texas, rights revert back to the Big 12. In 2016, who knows if Texas’ own network, ESPN or Fox Sports Net will have control of that game. But there’s no doubt that TV rights money was a huge part of the cancellation. Texas probably wanted a bigger payoff plus Minnesota wasn’t willing to part with a bigger payout and lose TV rights at the same time. You may see more of this with Big 12 schools down the line.

Is my job safe?

Bwhahaha!

Scott
I don’t know. Who do you work for? Ha ha.
Ok, a very successful mailbag. Good questions. We’ll definitely do this again in a couple of months. Thanks to everyone who e-mailed a question. If you would like to be in the next mailbag, send an sports media question or comment with your first name, last initial and town. I hope to have some swag next time.

by , under ESPN, ESPN 3D, ESPN Classic, Hard Knocks, MLB, MLB Network, Monday Night Football, NFL, NFL Films, NFL Network, Olympics, Rich Eisen, Rogers Sportsnet, Time Warner Cable

Ok, time to do the Friday megalinks. Coming at night again after shuffling between two offices and playing chauffeur. So blogging had to take a back seat for a bit.

I thank everyone who sent in questions for the Fang’s Bites mailbag. I will answer the questions this weekend. It’s my hope that the mailbag will become a regular feature on Fang’s Bites, perhaps every two or three months.

For the Weekend Viewing Picks, go here to check out what’s happening in sports and primetime TV.

Time for the links.

Baseball Games On Your TV This Weekend

by , under ESPN, Fox Sports, MLB, MLB Network, TBS

Let’s review the games on national TV from today through next Wednesday. Technically that’s not the weekend, but most of the games from MLB’s partners are on this weekend so the title remains. Let’s first go over the games on Fox. Three games as usual. And again, Joe Buck is not working on Saturday which means he’s worked 12 out of a possible 17 Saturdays.

FOX SPORTS NOTES, QUOTES & ANECDOTES

DIVISION LEADERS FACE OFF IN CINCY – As high temps sweep across the country, playoff races are also heating up across MLB. On Saturday, July 31 (4:00 PM ET), the FOX SATURDAY BASEBALL GAME OF THE WEEK features three enticing matchups. In Cincinnati, a pair of division leaders face off as Brian McCann and the NL East-leading Braves visit Joey Votto and the NL Central-leading Reds. In Boston, the Red Sox continue their push for a postseason birth when they welcome Miguel Cabrera and the Tigers to Fenway. Out west, California rivals meet and look to keep pace in the NL Wild Card race as Barry Zito and the Giants host Andre Ethier and the Dodgers in San Fran. This week, the pregame show originates live from AT&T Park in San Francisco with host Chris Rose. Once game action begins, Rose joins the game crew including Kenny Albert and Eric Karros as a field reporter.

RINGOLSBY: “BUBBLE TEAMS NOTABLY ABSENT FROM CHATTER” – With the trade deadline just days away, it’s time for teams to decide whether they’re sellers, buyers, or just staying put. FOXSports.com writer Tracy Ringolsby discusses how the Boston Red Sox and Detroit Tigers are in unfamiliar territory. “The deadline is nearing and the Red Sox are lumped with Detroit, Oakland, the Mets, Colorado and Florida on the list of teams that would like to be buyers but find themselves in limbo as to whether they should buy or sell,” said Ringolsby. “Boston has become more of an observer, at least publicly, than a participant in this year’s deadline deal discussions. Detroit was considered at one point to be involved in the bidding for pitchers Dan Haren and Roy Oswalt, but the Tigers have had to take a step backward in light of their suddenly injury-ravaged roster.  More concerning is that Boston has been hit with a series of serious injuries that have put them eight games back of the AL East-leading Yankees and five games behind second-place Tampa Bay.”

by , under NFL Network

We have the coverage plans for NFL Network for Pro Football Hall of Fame Week. For some reason, I thought it was this week, but it’s actually next week. That’s neither here nor there for you. So here is what you’ll see on the channel if it is on your cable or satellite provider.

NFL NETWORK HEADS TO CANTON, OH FOR PRO FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME WEEKEND
Unmatched Coverage Includes Debuts of Jerry Rice: Catching History Wednesday, August 4 at 8:00 PM ET & The Triplets: Emmitt Smith’s Road to Canton at 9:00 PM ET
“Hall of Fame” Analysts Rod Woodson & Michael Irvin Anchor Broadcast Team from Canton
Seven Hours of Live Coverage on Enshrinement Saturday, August 7
NFL Network returns to Canton, OH for one of the greatest traditions in sports when Pro Football’s greatest players welcome in a new class with the 47th Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Ceremony. NFL Network delivers seven hours of live, high-definition coverage on Enshrinement Saturday, August 7 beginning at 4:00 PM ET. 2007 enshrinee Michael Irvin and 2009 enshrinee Rod Woodson highlight NFL Network’s broadcast team that also includes Rich Eisen, Steve Mariucci, Jason La Canfora and Kara Henderson.
NFL Network’s Hall of Fame-related programming also features the debut of two shows that pay tribute to 2010 Hall of Fame enshrinees Jerry Rice and Emmitt Smith Wednesday, August 4. In Jerry Rice: Catching History, debuting at 8:00 PM ET, Steve Mariucci returns to Candlestick Park with the league’s all-time career leader in pass receptions to relive the illustrious career that has earned him a place in Canton. The one-hour show covers all of his heroic highlights, and uncovers the secrets that made him one of the greatest players in NFL history. Jerry Rice: Catching History also includes never before told stories about Rice’s early days, and a return to his favorite workout spot – simply known as, ‘The Hill.’
Immediately following at 9:00 PM ET, The Triplets: Emmitt Smith’s Road to Canton reunites Cowboys Michael Irvin, Troy Aikman and Emmitt Smith to reminisce on the legacy the trio built in the Dallas in the ‘90s and celebrate the next “triplets” reunion in the halls of Canton. The trio looks back on Smith’s signature game versus the Giants, where he tallied 168 rushing yards, 10 receptions for 61 yards and a touchdown despite suffering a shoulder injury, their Super Bowl championships and Irvin and Aikman offer Smith words of wisdom for Enshrinement Saturday.
Both Jerry Rice: Catching History and Triplets: Emmitt Smith’s Road to Canton are voiced by actor Clarke Peters, best known for his role as Detective Lester Freamon in HBO’s critically-acclaimed drama, The Wire.

As members of the Hall of Fame, no one understands the emotions and sentiments being felt by the 2010 enshrinees better than Irvin and Woodson. As a member of the class of 2007, Irvin enters his third year as a member of NFL Network’s Hall of Fame broadcast team, while Woodson brings his Hall of Fame credentials one year after his enshrinement as a member of the Hall’s 2009 class.
NFL Network’s full coverage from the Pro Football Hall of Fame begins Friday, August 6 at 7:00 PM ET with NFL Total Access at the Hall of Fame, where both Rice and Smith are scheduled to appear.

  • The Top 10 Dallas Cowboys of All-Time, According to ‘The Playmaker’: It’s a list that you’ve heard debated and discussed in the past, but never from one of Dallas’ greatest. ‘The Playmaker’ Michael Irvin ranks the Top 10 Dallas Cowboys of all-time.

Improvements include a massive 32-foot-wide LED video screen as an on-stage backdrop where video clips and selected images will be projected on a wall suspended above the stage floor and for the first time, presenters’ speeches serve as the voiceover to a four-minute highlight package honoring the corresponding enshrinee.

ESPN Says Don’t Expect To See The LeBron James Story On Its Website. Not Now. Not Ever

by , under ESPN

Well, this is just developing. ESPN has published statements from ESPN.com Editor-in-Chief Rob King and the writer of the spiked LeBron James story, Arash Markazi. It’s been tweeted by both CNBC’s Darren Rovell and Sports Illustrated’s Richard Deitsch.

According to ESPN, Markazi did not properly identify himself to the LeBron James camp as a reporter and that’s where the problems started. As a result, ESPN says it will never publish the story in any form on its digital platforms, but you can find it in a multitude of places including Google Docs.

Here are the statements:

Rob King, Vice President & Editor-in-Chief, ESPN Digital Media:
“ESPN.com will not be posting the story in any form. We looked into the situation thoroughly and found that Arash did not properly identify himself as a reporter or clearly state his intentions to write a story. As a result, we are not comfortable with the content, even in an edited version, because of the manner in which the story was reported. We’ve been discussing the situation with Arash and he completely understands. To be clear, the decisions to pull the prematurely published story and then not to run it were made completely by ESPN editorial staff without influence from any outside party.”

Arash Markazi, Writer & Columnist, ESPNLosAngeles.com:
“I have been in conversations with ESPN.com’s editors and, upon their complete review, understand their decision not to run the story. It is important to note that I stand by the accuracy of the story in its entirety, but should have been clearer in representing my intent to write about the events I observed.”

To some, it will appear that Markazi is taking one for the team. We’ll probably never know the real story behind this spiking.

It’s Official! Jay Glazer Joins NFL Network As A "Contributor"

by , under NFL Network

It was first tweeted by Sports Business Journal’s John Ourand early Wednesday morning, confirmed later that morning by SportsbyBrooks and finally made official today by NFL Network. Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer will join NFL Network and provide commentary and analysis. He won’t be the Insider as NFL Network has Jason La Canfora for that. However, Jay will be seen in August on NFL Network on NFL Total Access and various specials. We have the announcement.

FOX NFL INSIDER JAY GLAZER JOINS NFL NETWORK
Dynamic TV Personality Will Contribute Opinions and Analysis on NFL Total Access and NFL Network Specials
Diehard and casual football fans enjoy FOX Sports Insider Jay Glazer’s weekly contribution on FOX NFL Sunday and now they will be able to see more of him as he joins NFL Network as a contributor, it was announced today.
Glazer will appear on NFL Network’s NFL Total Access and other shows and specials throughout the year. Glazer has appeared as a guest on NFL Network’s Super Bowl and other specials previously. He will be making his debut in August as preseason football kicks off on NFL Network.
“Jay is one of the most entertaining and informative NFL personalities on television,” said Eric Weinberger, NFL Network executive producer. “We are building our roster of analysts and contributors to deliver more for fans who can’t get enough NFL news and information seven days a week, 365 days a year. In addition to Jay, there will be even more additions to our NFL Network team of on-air personalities coming this season.”
“It will be different than what I do at FOX. I’ll be there to provide my personal insights and opinions on various NFL topics,” said Glazer. “FOX is my main gig and I will break news there, but I’ll also now be on NFL Network during the season and more during the off season on NFL Total Access and specials around NFL events.”
Glazer will continue role as “NFL Insider” for Fox NFL Sunday. NFL Total Access is the NFL show of record, providing daily news, interviews and analysis from around the league live Monday through Saturday at 7:00 PM ET on NFL Network.
Glazer was named as Sports Illustrated’s Media Person of the Year in 2007. He is known for breaking stories, strong opinions and relationships with players, coaches, executives and others associated with the NFL.
In addition to being on FOX Sports, Glazer is the lead NFL writer and hosts a weekly show on Foxsports.com. He currently serves as a co-host of Spike TV’s “Pros vs. Joes” series.

Glazer who has a close relationship with several NFL players thanks to his MMA training business will be able to tap into that for NFL Network. Because he’s more of a contributor for NFL Network and not reporting, the conflict of interest concerns will be less there than at Fox.

ESPN 3D Announces Its First Three College Football Games of 2010

by , under College Football, ESPN 3D

We have this announcement that ESPN 3D will carry three college football games in the first three weeks of the season. This all leads to the BCS National Championship Game which will also be produced in 3D. Currently, this is a separate production from the 2D High Definition broadcast that most of us will see. We have the announcement from the fine people at ESPN.

ESPN 3D Schedules First Three 2010 College Football Games

The first two weeks of ESPN 3D’s inaugural college football season will open up with telecasts involving three of the top five ranked teams in an ESPN.com early preseason Top 25 poll. Coverage will begin with No. 2 Boise State, entering the season with a 14-game winning streak, against No. 5 Virginia Tech from FedEx Field, home of the Washington Redskins Monday, Sept. 6 at 8 p.m. ET.  The network will telecast approximately 13 college football games this season, concluding with the BCS National Championship Game on Monday, January 10 at 8:30 p.m.

On Sept. 11 at 3:40 p.m. defending Big Ten Conference champion No. 3 Ohio State will host No. 19 Miami of the ACC in the first meeting between the perennial powers since the Buckeyes defeated the Hurricanes 31-24 in the 2003 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl to win the 2002 BCS National Championship.  This marks the second time that Ohio State has been featured in 3D by ESPN as the team’s game against USC on Sept. 9, 2009, served as a test telecast for the network.

The third week of the season features a showdown between traditional powers from top conferences when Clemson from the ACC travels to Auburn from the SEC on Sept. 18 with kickoff slated for 7 p.m.

In addition to ESPN 3D, ESPN’s comprehensive coverage of the 2010 college football season will feature more than 400 regular- and postseason games across ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPN3.com, ESPN Regional Television, ESPN Radio, ESPN Classic, ESPN Mobile TV and ESPN GamePlan.

In addition to the games announced today, ESPN 3D will telecast a featured college football game almost every week of the season. Additional dates will be announced as the season progresses; schedule subject to change. College football games televised on ESPN 3D will utilize Sony professional cameras.

ESPN 3D will be announcing additional programming, including NBA, college basketball and Winter X Games 15, throughout the year.

As promised, here are the synopses of each film.

    Film summaries
Jordan Rides the Bus (Ron Shelton)
In the fall of 1993, in his prime and at the summit of the sports world, Michael Jordan walked away from pro basketball. After leading the Dream Team to an Olympic gold medal in 1992 and taking the Chicago Bulls to their third consecutive NBA championship the following year, Jordan was jolted by the murder of his father. Was it the brutal loss of such an anchor in his life that caused the world’s most famous athlete to rekindle a childhood ambition by playing baseball? Or some feeling that he had nothing left to prove or conquer in basketball? Or something deeper and perhaps not yet understood? Academy Award-nominated director Ron Shelton, a former minor leaguer who brought his experiences to life in the classic movie Bull Durham, will revisit Jordan’s short career in the minor leagues and explore the motivations that drove the world’s most competitive athlete to play a new sport in the relative obscurity of Birmingham, Ala., for a young manager named Terry Francona.
Little Big Men (Al Szymanski and Peter Franchella)
On August 28, 1982, Cody Webster and a small group of schoolyard friends from Kirkland, Wash., sat anxiously in a dugout waiting to take the field for the championship game of the Little League World Series. Their focus was just about what you’d expect from any 12-year-old: hit the ball, throw strikes, cross your fingers and then maybe – maybe – you’ll win. Adults in the stands and watching from home saw a much broader field of play. The memories of American hostages and a crippling oil crisis were still fresh; the economic malaise of the late 1970s still lingered; and the new President was recovering from an assassination attempt even while confronting new threats from the Soviet Union. Meanwhile, back on that tiny baseball field in Williamsport, Pa., where America’s game was celebrated each summer, no American team had won a true international Little League World Series Championship in more than a decade. When the Kirkland players rushed from their dugout that day, they stepped onto a much bigger field than the one they saw. What they did, how they did it, and what happened to each of the players in the years that followed is a multi-faceted story. Emmy Award-winning filmmakers Al Szymanski and Peter Franchella will examine what became of a group of childhood teammates when the high point in their athletic lives occurred before their lives had really begun.
One Night in Vegas (Reggie Bythewood)
On the evening of September 7, 1996, Mike Tyson, the WBC heavyweight champion, attempted to take Bruce Seldon’s WBA title at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. At this point in his career, Tyson’s fights had become somewhat of a cultural phenomenon, where the ever present hype of the professional boxing scene would come face to face with the worlds of big business, Hollywood, and hip hop. Sitting ringside was controversial rapper Tupac Shakur. Shakur and Tyson were friends; a feeling of kinship linked them as each rose to stardom from poverty only to be thrown in prison. Following Tyson’s victory, Shakur and “Iron Mike” were to celebrate at an after party, but the rap star never arrived. Shakur was brutally gunned down later that night, and the scene in Las Vegas quickly turned from would be celebratory revelry to ill fated and inopportune tragedy. Director Reggie Bythewood, with the full cooperation of Mike Tyson, will tell not only the story of that infamous night but of the remarkable friendship between Tyson and Tupac.
Unmatched (Directors: Lisa Lax and Nancy Stern Winters; Producer: Hannah Storm)
The first time Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova stepped onto a tennis court together, the world scarcely noticed. Only a few hundred spectators saw the pert 18-year-old beat the scrappy 16-year-old Czech in 1973. “I remember that she was fat,” Evert recalled. “She was very emotional on the court, whining if she didn’t feel she was playing well. But I remember thinking, if she loses weight, we’re all in trouble.” Said Navratilova, “My goal was for her to remember my name.” Eighty matches later – amid the extraordinary growth of women’s tennis – Evert not only remembered, but became a tried and true friend and confidante, remarkable considering the two appeared to be polar opposites in upbringing, life styles and personal relationships. Through a series of personal conversations between Evert and Navratilova, filmmakers Lisa Lax and Nancy Stern Winters, along with producer Hannah Storm, will tell the story of one of the greatest one-on-one sports rivalries and capture these two extraordinary athletes’ views on tennis and an ever-changing world.
The House of Steinbrenner (Barbara Kopple)
Love them or hate them, the Yankees remain the most successful team in American sports history. Behind George M. Steinbrenner, a man who at his passing in July 2010 has proven to be as iconic to the team as its pinstripes, the Yankees restored their storied sports stature with seven World Championships. Through all the ups and downs of his reign, “The Boss” managed to link the legends and legacy of Yankees past to Yankees present, and in so doing, assured the passage of older generations of Yankee fans to a younger generation that promises to carry forward well into the 21st century. An essential part of that accomplishment included the closing of the old Yankee Stadium and the construction of a new one, and the passing of ownership from George himself to his heirs, led by his younger son, Hal.  Two-time Oscar-winning filmmaker Barbara Kopple documents this historic moment of transition for the team, the family and its fans, all of which was magnificently capped off with the Yankees’ 27th World Championship.
    Into The Wind (Steve Nash)
In 1980, Terry Fox continued his fight against bone cancer with the pursuit of a singular, motivating vision: to run across Canada. Three years after having his right leg amputated six inches above the knee after being diagnosed with osteosarcoma, Fox set out to cover more than a marathon’s distance each day until he reached the shores of Victoria, British Columbia. Anonymous at the start of his journey, Fox steadily captured the heart of a nation with his Marathon of Hope.  However the 21-year old BC native’s goal was not fame, but to spread awareness and raise funds for cancer research. After 143 days and two-thirds of the way across Canada, with the eyes of a country watching, Fox’s journey came to an abrupt end when newly discovered tumors took over his body. Two-time NBA MVP, proud Canadian, and first-time filmmaker Steve Nash will share Fox’s incredible story of perseverance and hope.
Four Days in October (Major League Baseball Productions)
When the night of October 6, 2004 came to a merciful end, the Curse of the Bambino was alive and well. The vaunted Yankee lineup, led by A-Rod, Jeter, and Sheffield, had just extended their ALCS lead to three games to none, pounding out 19 runs against their hated rivals. The next night, in Game 4, the Yankees took a 4-3 lead into the bottom of the ninth inning, then turned the game over to Mariano Rivera, the best relief pitcher in postseason history, to secure yet another trip to the World Series. But after a walk and a hard-fought stolen base, the cold October winds of change began to blow. Over four consecutive days and nights, this unlikely group of Red Sox miraculously won four straight games to overcome the inevitability of their destiny. Using extensive archive coverage from that week, Major League Baseball Productions will produce a film in “real-time” that takes an in-depth look at the 96 hours that brought salvation to Red Sox Nation and made baseball history in the process.
    Once Brothers (NBA Entertainment)
Drazen Petrovic and Vlade Divac were two friends who grew up together sharing the common bond of basketball. Together, they lifted the Yugoslavian National team to unimaginable heights. After conquering Europe, they both went to America where they became the first two foreign players to attain NBA stardom. But with the fall of the Soviet Union on Christmas Day 1991, Yugoslavia split up. A war broke out between Petrovic’s Croatia and Divac’s Serbia. Long buried ethnic tensions surfaced. And these two men, once blood brothers, were now on opposite sides of a deadly civil war. As Petrovic and Divac continued to face each other on the basketball courts of the NBA, only hatred passed between the two. Then, on the fateful night of June 7, 1993, Drazen Petrovic was killed in an auto accident. Once Brothers will tell the gripping tale of these two men, how circumstances beyond their control tore apart their friendship, and whether Divac has ever come to terms with the death of a friend before they had a chance to reconcile.
Tim Richmond: To the Limit (Rory Karpf)
Natural. Rock star. Outsider. In the 1980s, race car driver Tim Richmond lived his life the way he raced cars – wide open. Born into a wealthy family, Richmond was the antithesis of the Southern, blue-collar, dirt-track racers who dominated NASCAR. He also was a flamboyant showman who basked in the attention of the media and fans – especially the attention of female admirers. Nevertheless, it was Richmond’s on-track performances that ended up drawing comparisons to racing legends. And in 1986, when he won seven NASCAR races and finished third in the Winston Cup series points race, some believed he was on the verge of stardom. But soon his freewheeling lifestyle caught up to him. He unexpectedly withdrew from the NASCAR racing circuit, reportedly suffering from double pneumonia. In reality, the diagnosis was much more dire: He had AIDS. Richmond returned to the track in 1987, but he was gone from the sport by the next year as his health deteriorated. He spent his final days as a recluse, dying on August 13, 1989, at the age of 34. Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Rory Karpf will examine the life and tragic death of one of NASCAR’s shooting stars.
Steve Bartman: Catching Hell (Alex Gibney)
With five outs remaining in Game 6 of the 2003 NLCS, a foul ball descended from the cold Chicago sky, seemingly destined for the glove of Cubs left fielder Moises Alou. But a flurry of hands reached up from the left field stands, and one hand, belonging to Cubs fan Steve Bartman, fatefully tipped the ball away from a frustrated Alou. As the cameras subsequently isolated on Bartman trying to stay composed in the stands, most long-suffering Cubs fans, including a chorus of hostile ones in Wrigley Field, quickly became convinced that he had swatted away Chicago’s chance of advancing to the World Series for the first time 58 years. Even though he was one of many who reached for a ball that appeared to them clearly out of play, and even though Cubs shortstop Alex Gonzalez booted an apparent inning-ending double play ball, and even though the Cubs still had a Game 7 left to try to win it, Steve Bartman became the most reviled man in Chicago. The mild-mannered Bartman released a sincere public apology, but his fate was already sealed by the Cubs fans’ need for a scapegoat to explain a near-century of losing. Although Cubs Nation has since moved on to other seasons and other losses, Bartman remains ostracized from a community he lives in and a team he once loved. Oscar-winning documentarian Alex Gibney relates the scapegoat compulsion to his own frustration as a Red Sox fan when Bill Buckner was similarly singled out for letting a fateful ground ball go through his legs in Game 6 of the 1986 World Series. Gibney engages Buckner and his story as a means of exploring what has kept Bartman so silent despite highly lucrative offers to tell his side of the story, and what has led many fans and media people in Chicago to now act as if the whole notorious incident never even took place.
Marion Jones: Press Pause (John Singleton)
Few athletes in Olympic history have reached such heights and depths as Marion Jones. After starring at the University of North Carolina and winning gold at the 1997 and 1999 World Track and Field Championships, her rise to the top culminated at the 2000 Summer Games in Sydney, Australia. There, she captivated the world with her beauty, style and athletic dominance, sprinting and jumping to three gold medals and two bronze. Eventually, though, her accomplishments and her reputation would be tarnished. For years, Jones denied the increasing speculation that she used performance-enhancing drugs. But in October 2007, she finally admitted what so many had long suspected that she had indeed used steroids. Jones was sentenced to six months in prison for lying to federal investigators and soon saw her Olympic achievements disqualified. Now a free woman, Jones is running in a new direction in life and taking time to reflect. Oscar-nominated director John Singleton will focus on the evolution of Marion Jones.
    Pony Excess (Thaddeus D. Matula)
From 1981-1984, a small private school in Dallas owned the best record in college football. The Mustangs of Southern Methodist University (SMU) were riding high on the backs of the vaunted “Pony Express” backfield. But as the middle of the decade approached, the program was coming apart at the seams. Wins became the only thing that mattered as the University increasingly ceded power of the football program to the city’s oil barons and real estate tycoons and flagrant and frequent NCAA violations became the norm. On February 25, 1987, the school and the sport were rocked, as the NCAA meted out “the death penalty” on a college football program for the first and only time in its history. SMU would be without football for two years, and the fan base would be without an identity for 20 more until the Mustangs’ win in the 2009 Hawaii Bowl. This is the story of Dallas in the 1980′s and the greed, power, and corruption that spilled from the oil fields onto the football field and all the way to the Governor’s Mansion. Director Thaddeus D. Matula, a product of the SMU film school, chronicles the rise, fall, and rebirth of this once mighty team.
The Best That Never Was (Jonathan Hock)
In 1981, college athletic recruiting changed forever as a dozen big-time football programs sat waiting for the decision by a physically powerful and lightning-quick high school running back named Marcus Dupree. Having already graced the cover of Sports Illustrated, Dupree attracted recruiters from schools in every major conference to his hometown of Philadelphia, Miss. More than a decade removed from being a flashpoint in the civil rights struggle, Philadelphia was once again thrust back into the national spotlight. Dupree took the attention in stride, and committed to Oklahoma. What followed, though, was a forgettable college career littered with conflict, injury and oversized expectations. Eight-time Emmy Award winner Jonathan Hock will examine why this star burned out so young and how he ultimately used football to redeem himself.

Last Year It’s Big Ben, This Year It’s LeBron

by , under ESPN, Train Wrecks

For whatever reason, ESPN’s relationship with athletes has become a story two years in a row. Last year, it was the strange refusal by the Alleged Worldwide Leader to report on a civil suit filed against Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. It took a public statement by Roethlisberger for ESPN to finally mention the story and post it on its website. The stance by ESPN not to mention it on SportsCenter or its NFL studio programs led to speculation as to why it wasn’t reporting the story. Conspiracy theorists thought the refusal was due to parent company Disney protecting Roethlisberger due to his participation in a reality show that summer with Shaquille O’Neal. ESPN took several hits  and it led to a re-examination at its Bristol headquarters.

Now just over a year later, ESPN is getting hits for the squashing of a story on LeBron James on its website. We all know of ESPN’s granting an hour of its airtime, well, an hour and 13 minutes in reality, to LeBron James to announce that he will play in Miami. ESPN got high ratings, but also was roundly criticized for getting in bed with James.

On Tuesday, a story by ESPN Los Angeles writer Arash Markazi was published on Tuesday, then quickly pulled. The story which is now stored on Google Docs chronicled a night in Las Vegas where James basically was having a boy’s night out. But word quickly spread of ESPN spiking the story and it led to speculation that James’ camp had something to do with it. According to CNBC’s Darren Rovell, they did not. In addition, the co-author of an upcoming book on ESPN, James Andrew Miller confirms Rovell’s tweet.

For its part, an ESPN spokesman tweeted that ESPN.com editors made the call to remove the story and it should not have seen the light of day:

“The story should have never been published. The draft was inadvertently put on the server before going through the usual editorial process. We are in the midst of looking into the matter.”

Ok, let’s take ESPN at its word, but the timing and the appearance of a cozy relationship doesn’t make this decision (not “The Decision”) any better. Deadspin’s Tommy Craggs doesn’t believe it.

Ken Schott of the Schenectady Gazette feels ESPN should avoid doing LeBron puff pieces.

The great Bethlehem Shoals at Fanhouse says maybe it was best for us not to know of LeBron’s excesses in Vegas.

Sure, the story may not have been worthy of publication, however, with the James “Decision” on July 8 and then ESPN.com’s decision just three weeks later, conspiracy theorists are having a field day. ESPN may have removed the story because it wasn’t worthy of publication, but it’s the appearance of impropriety and conflict of interest that make people wonder.

Turner Sports To Produce The 92nd PGA Championship In 3-D

by , under 3-D, PGA Championship, Turner Sports

2010 will be remembered as the year where 3-D TV really gained a foothold on sports television. Looking back on the test events last year and compare that to the number of events produced in 3-D this year, you have a considerable jump in the amount of sports produced in the 3rd dimension. Well, Turner Sports has announced plans to produce this year’s PGA Championship at Whistling Straits in 3-D. Already, Turner has picked up a bunch of providers on both cable and satellite to distribute the event to a nationwide audience of about 13. But still, it’s a big step for 3-D.

Turner Sports and The PGA to Offer 3D Coverage of the 92nd PGA Championship Through PGA.com and TNT’s Television Distributors
Vince Cellini to host coverage alongside 2002 PGA Champion Rich Beem
Turner Sports and The PGA of America announced today they will offer coverage of the 92nd PGA Championship in 3D on Thursday, Aug. 12 and Friday, Aug. 13, on PGA.com and through TNT’s television distributors Bright House Networks, Cablevision, Comcast, Cox Communications, DIRECTV, and Time Warner Cable. The 3D coverage will focus on the par-3 12th and 17th holes at Whistling Straits from 3:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. ET each day. Host Vince Cellini who will be joined by 2002 PGA Champion Rich Beem will provide commentary and analysis on the holes. Beem also will provide analysis throughout the weekend during PGA.com’s extensive 2D online offerings.
The 3D production will utilize eight cameras produced specifically for 3D that will provide a unique look at course action and give fans a one-of-a-kind visual experience to watch the world’s best golfers play the course’s challenging par-3s. In order to experience the event in 3D, viewers will need a 3D TV or PC display with matching 3D glasses. Fans can visit http://www.pga.com/pgachampionship/2010/3d to get more information about the hardware and software used to view the 3D production online.
In addition to 3D coverage, Turner Sports will also offer 20 hours of television coverage on TNT, live 2D coverage on PGA.com and on mobile devices, with additional details to be announced at a later date.
“At Turner Sports we continually look to provide the fan with an innovative viewing experience through our ability to test and explore new opportunities,” said Lenny Daniels, Turner Sports EVP and COO. “The PGA Championship has always been a platform for forward thinking and interactive technology. During previous PGA Championship coverage on TNT and PGA.com, we have introduced our marquee follow coverage, live streaming action through mobile apps and included social networking within our linear broadcast. Introducing 3D coverage to this crown jewel event allows us another opportunity to better serve our audience and add to our multitude of platforms.”
“The PGA Championship has perennially been the source of many of the game’s most special moments,” said PGA of America Director of Broadcast & New Media Casey Morton. “The addition of 3D television and online technology unfolding at Whistling Straits, a spectacular venue for viewers, is yet another new level of excitement for fans to follow the world’s premier players. We anticipate that the addition of this bonus for viewers opens another chapter in PGA Championship tradition.”
Each year during the PGA Championship, Turner provides fans with an exclusive and interactive viewing experience combining television, online and mobile. Through TNT’s four days of coverage, the ability to follow marquee groups live on PGA.com and instant player alerts and notifications on the PGA Championship iPhone app, fans get an all-access pass for all the tournament action.

Daryl Johnston Hired By NFL Network

    by , under NFL Network

Fox Sports’ Daryl Johnston, an NFL game analyst for Fox Sports dating back to 2001, will be joining NFL Network’s NFL Total Access show as a studio analyst. Earlier this year, Johnston was part of NFL Network’s coverage for the Super Bowl XLVIII selection so he was comfortable in deciding to work there as well. “Moose” as he was known during his playing days with the Dallas Cowboys in the 1990′s, will start his NFL Network sojourn on Thursday and be utilized mostly in the studio. Although he would a very nice replacement for game analyst Matt Millen who was the big bucket of suck last season. Anyway, here’s the press release from NFL Network.

FORMER COWBOYS STANDOUT DARYL “MOOSE” JOHNSTON JOINS NFL NETWORK
FOX Sports Game Analyst Joins NFL Network’s All-Pro Analyst Lineup on NFL Total Access
Former Dallas Cowboys fullback and broadcast veteran Daryl “Moose” Johnston has joined NFL Network as an analyst, it was announced today.
Johnston, a three-time Super Bowl champion and two-time Pro Bowl selection who spent his entire 10-year NFL career with the Dallas Cowboys, will serve as an in-studio analyst on NFL Total Access and contribute to other NFL Network shows and specials. He will make his debut on NFL Total Access on Thursday, July 29 at 7:00 PM ET.
Johnston will also continue his role as a game analyst for Fox NFL Sunday this fall.
“Daryl joins our already deep roster of champions on NFL Network” said Eric Weinberger, NFL Network executive producer. “He has become one of the top game voices in the business at FOX Sports and we are looking forward to extending his analysis and opinions to our studio shows and specials.”
“I have been a fan of NFL Network since it launched and enjoyed working on the Super Bowl selection show earlier this year,” said Johnston. “Being on NFL Total Access is a perfect complement to calling games on FOX Sports.”
NFL Total Access is the NFL show of record, providing daily news, interviews and analysis from around the league live Monday through Saturday at 7:00 PM ET during the NFL season. Uniquely structured to provide news and analysis through the players eyes, Johnston joins a group of analysts including Rod Woodson, Warren Sapp, Jamie Dukes, Trent Green, Marshall Faulk and others on NFL Total Access that offer first-hand insight on the hottest topics surrounding all 32 NFL teams.
In May, Johnston served as a contributor on NFL Network’s special Super Bowl XLVIII Selection Show live from the NFL Spring Meetings in Dallas, TX alongside host Rich Eisen and analyst Michael Irvin.
As a second round pick of the Dallas Cowboys in the 1989 NFL Draft, Johnston spent his 10-year career with the Cowboys and scored 22 touchdowns and accumulated more receptions (294) than carries (232).
A native of Youngstown, NY, Johnston is a 1989 graduate of Syracuse University where as a member of the Orangemen football team he earned All-Big East honors in 1988 an was an All-American in 1989.

No official word on Jay Glazer joining NFL Network, but I do expect that release anytime.

Sports Media Weekly Podcast No. 42 – Susan Shan

by , under Podcast, Sports Media Weekly

Another Wednesday and another episode of the Sports Media Weekly Podcast which I co-host with Southern New England media mogul Keith Thibault of Sports Media Journal.

As usual, Keith and I discuss the news of the week and we talk about the breaking news concerning Jay Glazer and Daryl Johnston of Fox Sports being hired by NFL Network to be studio analysts while keeping their main jobs on Sundays.

Then we talk about the lower ratings for the Red Sox on NESN and the team falling out of first place of all regional sports networks carrying MLB. We speculate on the reasons behind the Red Sox going from 1st to 5th place this season. I theorize that it was the deep playoff runs of the Celtics and Bruins. Keith feels it’s the team’s poor performance this season.

We also talk about the problems with NASCAR and its lack of younger viewers. We exchange thoughts on the reasons behind the loss of the 18-34 demographic for the sport and what can be done to get the younger viewers back.

And we look at why Chris Berman is being honored by the Pro Football Hall of Fame this weekend over the man who revolutionized the NFL pregame host position, Brent Musburger.

Our guest this week is the lovely Susan Shan who has recently launched her own website and blog.

Keith and I ask her about why she launched her site. We talk about why social networks like Twitter and Facebook are so important for a writer to market him or herself. And I ask Susan about her recent spat with Jen Sterger of Versus’ The Daily Line.

And I jokingly ask Susan calling herself “The Asian Sensation” when we all know that there is only one Asian Sensation and that is yours truly. I keed, I keed.

We also talk about Susan’s taking part in the Grand Master Fantasy Football Tournament which is raising money for Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

Another fantastic podcast if you allow me to say so myself. We always get heavy hitters on the podcast and you can look at our past lineup to see.

Spokane Shock vs. Jacksonville Sharks on ‘Arena Football Friday’ at 8:00 PM ET
In both teams’ last regular season game, the Spokane Shock take on the Jacksonville Sharks on Friday at 8:00 PM ET.
The Sharks, with only one loss at home, are hoping to put an end to the Shock’s eleven-game winning streak. Jacksonville just played their last road game of the season, defeating the Battle Wings 48-20, which included 29 unanswered points in the second half. QB Bernard Morris threw for 228 yards in his first start ever and WR Dallas Baker became the first Jacksonville players to catch for over 1,000 yards.
The Shock, having already earned the best record this season and a home game for playoffs, are hoping to finish the regular season on a high note. They defeated the Sharks 67-57 earlier this year and have been nearly unstoppable in recent months. QB Kyle Rowley set the tone early last game, throwing for a touchdown on the team’s opening drive. With the help of a strong performance by the Spokane defense, the Shock defeated the Chicago Rush 63-49 last week on Arena Football Friday.
Paul Burmeister calls the play-by-play with game analysis by Anthony Herron.
Hamilton Takes on Saskatchewan in CFL Game Saturday at 6:30 PM ET
This weekend’s CFL matchup between the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Saskatchewan Roughriders airs live at 6:30 PM ET Saturday.
After being handed their first loss of the season, the Roughriders are looking to bounce back against the Tiger-Cats. Saskatchewan (3-1) is currently tied for first place in their division.
Roughriders QB Darian Durant has been a dominating force for the team, having thrown for over 1,300 yards already this season. Though his numbers are slightly lower, Hamilton QB Kevin Glenn was recently named CFL Offensive Player of the Week after completing over 70% of his passes last week versus Montreal, and rookie RB Marcus Thigpen is expected to continue his strong presence on the Tiger-Cats offense.

    Some Additional Wednesday Links

by , under 3-D, 30 for 30, ESPN Deportes, Fox Sports, MLB, MLB Network, MLS, NBC Sports, NESN, NFL, NFL Network, PGA Championship, Red Sox, TNT, Train Wrecks, TV Ratings, WBZ-FM, WEEI

Ok, let me provide you with some additional linkage here. I got interrupted and posted my original links rather hastily. Then I had to tape this week’s Sports Media Weekly Podcast with Keith Thibault and our guest, Susan Shan so let’s bring you the rest of the linkage now.

We’re getting word that ESPN spiked an article that was posted by writer Arash Markazi. In it, Markazi follows LeBron James in Las Vegas and chronicles his night at the Venetian hotel. For whatever reason, ESPN took it down, but credit Will Leitch of New York Magazine for putting it on Google Docs where it stands right now. According to CNBC’s Darren Rovell, James’ management team denies having anything to do with pulling the story. Whatever the reason, ESPN again looks bad for apparently having a cozy relationship with James. And after the ill-advised “The Decision”, ESPN doesn’t need more black eyes. We’ll monitor this story to see if it has any legs.

Bob Nightengale of USA Today notes that next year’s MLB season will begin earlier and end earlier

Whitney Matheson of USA Today’s Pop Candy blog looks at the latest ESPN 30 for 30 doc on BMX.

CNBC’s Darren Rovell talks with Pac 10/12 Commissioner Larry Scott.

Forbes’ Great Speculations blog notes that ESPN is crucial to Disney’s success or failure.

Portada Online says ESPN Deportes Radio has found a Philadelphia affiliate.

Jessica Heslam & Thomas Grillo from the Boston Herald look into why the Red Sox ratings on NESN are way down from last year.

D.C. Denison and Alexandra McMahon of the Boston Globe also try to figure out the Red Sox ratings slide.

Jim Shea of the Hartford Courant feels it might be NESN’s presentation that might be turning off viewers.

Ken Schott from the Schenectady Gazette writes MLB Network will have expanded coverage of the trading deadline this Saturday.

The Philadelphia Business Journal reports that a baby recliner designed by Leslie Gudel of Comcast SportsNet Philadelphia is being recalled after the death of a four month old.

Jim Williams of the Washington Examiner discusses the MLS All-Star Game which is being carried by ESPN2 tonight.

Barry Horn of the Dallas Morning News says Tuesday’s Oakland-Texas Rangers game was the highest rated baseball game of the year for Fox Sports Southwest.

Mike Colias of Crain’s Chicago Business says the Cubs struggles on the field are translating into lower TV ratings.

Tom Hoffarth of the Los Angeles Daily News talks about the possible successors to Pat Haden on NBC’s Notre Dame football telecasts.

Tom writes that Minnesota Timberwolves GM David Kahn is now screening his media requests after being fined by the NBA.

SportsbyBrooks gets confirmation from Jay Glazer that he’s going to work at NFL Network while keeping his current position at Fox NFL Sunday.

SbyB also discovers that NFL Network was also targeting Sports Illustrated’s and NBC’s Peter King but was turned down.

The Sports Media Watch has the Weekend Overnight Ratings

SMW also has some ratings news and notes.

Digital Journal has the NFL anticipating its highest rated season yet.

TVbytheNumbers notes that TNT plans to produce the PGA Championship next month in 3-D.

Boston Sports Radio Watch explores the war of words and ratings between WEEI and 98.5 The Sports Hub.

Rock Mamota in Chicago Now claims MLB is in need of a ratings transfusion.

That will do it for now.

The Day Is Shot For Me Links

by , under 3-D, Big 12, Big Ten Network, Erin Andrews, Fox Sports, FSN, HBO Sports, IMG, ISP Sports, MLB, NFL, NFL Network, Pac 10, Sun Sports, TV Ratings

Having had to take Dad to the eye doctor then being told that I can’t go to the Massachusetts office because he’s taking a client to lunch is really killing me. Not having a car is killing me. Not having my own schedule is killing me. And after today, the blogging schedule will be light over the next few days due to end of the month/beginning of the month stuff will kill me as well. Not a happy day. And if I get that spam from someone telling me to move to New Mexico, that person will be getting my wrath.

So having said that, it’s time to do some linkage while I can.

In a big move, Michael Smith of Sports Business Daily reports that IMG College is purchasing ISP Sports which means a shift in the multimedia rights of 60 colleges and universities.

USA Today’s Michael Hiestand says Big Ten Network is going to use archival footage, some never aired before, to produce a new 13 week series.

Mike Florio at Pro Football Talk writes that Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer and Daryl Johnston will be joining NFL Network as analysts, but will also remain at Fox in their current capacities.

Media analyst Larry Gerbrandt writes in the Hollywood Reporter that professionals and manufacturers want to push 3-D TV as fast as they can.

Lacey Rose of Forbes speaks with Sony Pictures Television head Andy Kaplan who’s bullish on 3-D.

Dennis Waszak, Jr. of the Associated Press says the NFL’s New York Jets are ready to be in the spotlight this summer thanks to HBO’s Hard Knocks.

CNBC’s Darren Rovell explores Tim Tebow’s new endorsement deal with Jockey undergarments.

Lisa Backus of the New Britain (CT) Herald reports an unsealed arrest warrant provides new details on the charges against former ESPN analyst Jeremy Green, son of former NFL coach Dennis Green. Jeremy was arrested earlier this month in a motel near the ESPN headquarters on child pornography charges.

Pete Dougherty in the Albany Times Union tries to piece together the NFL regular season TV schedule for the Capital Region.

Jenny Vrentas of the Newark (NJ) Star-Ledger explores how HBO lured the Jets to take part in Hard Knocks.

In the New Jersey Newsroom, Evan Weiner writes that an East Coast media trip by Pac 10/12 football coaches is in reality, a ploy to increase TV rights fees for the conference.

In the Washington Examiner, Jim Williams looks at the stronger TV ratings for the Nationals.

The Washington Post’s Reliable Source blog looks at Erin Andrews going to Capitol Hill Tuesday to lobby for strong anti-stalking legislation.

Carol Vaughn of the Eastern Shore (VA) News writes that ESPN will be on Tangier Island to shoot an ad for ESPN3.com.

Dave Nicholson of the Tampa (FL) Tribune writes about a local girl who was featured on ESPN’s E:60 for her feat of throwing two perfect games in Little League.

In the St. Petersburg Times, Tom Jones says Sun Sports’ Dwayne Staats did not mention Matt Garza’s no-hitter for the Tampa Bay Rays until the final out.

Jeff Mosier of the Dallas Morning News cites an ESPN Outside the Lines report that mentioned the number of food safety violations at Cowboys Stadium.

An aside here. I saw that report on ESPN before heading out Sunday morning and it was an eyeopener. Very solid journalism from ESPN and Paula Lavigne. The story is still having an impact three days after it aired.

Brent Zwerneman of the Houston Chronicle says Big 12 Commissioner Don Beebe can only look forward after a tumultuous summer that almost led to the disbanding of the conference.

Don Walker of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel says the Brewers’ TV ratings are down this year compared to the same period a year ago.

Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times writes that a miscommunication between FSN Northwest and higher ups prevented the network from airing a confrontation in the Mariners dugout Saturday during a game against the Red Sox that NESN and Japanese network NHK had no problem in showing to viewers.

Bruce Dowbiggin at the Toronto Globe and Mail says the noose may be tightening on cyclist Lance Armstrong over steroids.

More coming up. I’ll post these now.

by , under Fox Sports, NFL Network

This just in as they say, Sports Business Journal’s John Ourand who’s one of the best sports media writers in the country has broken another story. He tweets late Tuesday/early Wednesday that Fox NFL Insider Jay Glazer and Fox Sports’ number two NFL analyst Daryl Johnson will join NFL Network.

Both will remain in their current capacities on Fox Sports. Glazer will still be the main information on Fox NFL Sunday and Johnston will continue to be teamed with Kenny Albert and Tony Siragusa on the 2nd best game for the NFL on Fox.

The Johnston hiring could have been foreseen when NFL Network used him for the Super Bowl announcement show earlier this year. The Glazer move is a total surprise.

I expect a press release on this Wednesday and there will be reaction on the Sports Media Weekly podcast with myself and co-host Keith Thibault as well.

I’ll continue to monitor this developing story.

Versus Set To Air Its 2nd UFC Event

    by , under UFC, Versus

This Saturday, Versus airs its 2nd live UFC event of the year. Back in March, Versus’ first UFC event garnered a 1.1 rating and just under 1.25 million viewers which matches some of its best NHL ratings.

We have details on the fights and what you can expect to see this Saturday on Versus.

LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT SHOWDOWN BETWEEN JON ‘BONES’ JONES AND VLADIMIR MATYUSHENKO HEADLINES VERSUS’ SECOND LIVE ULTIMATE FIGHTING CHAMPIONSHIP® (UFC®) EVENT ON AUGUST 1 AT 9 P.M. ET

NEW YORK, N.Y. (July 27, 2010)-VERSUS, the fastest growing sports cable network in the country, will air its second live UFC® event on Sunday, August 1, featuring a light heavyweight battle between Jon ‘Bones’ Jones and Vladimir Matyushenko. The fight will originate from the San Diego Sports Arena and air live on VERSUS at 9 p.m. ET.

VERSUS has been the national cable television home of World Extreme Cagefighting® (WEC®) since 2007 and in December 2009, the network announced a multi-year extension with Zuffa LLC., the owners of both the WEC and UFC, to air two live UFC events in 2010 in addition to seven live WEC fights. VERSUS’ first live UFC event on Sunday, March 21, which marked the UFC’s debut on a national sports cable network, averaged 1.24 million viewers, garnered a 1.1 national HH rating and made VERSUS one of the most-watched cable networks in the country among all key male demos.

Jon Jones (10-1), winner of four of his last five UFC fights, put together his most impressive performance to date during VERSUS’ first UFC fight in March, with a first-round TKO over the battle-tested Brandon Vera. The 22-year-old phenom is an unorthodox striker and will face the most seasoned of veterans in Matyushenko.

Matyushenko (24-4), 39-years-old, brings a wealth of experience with each of his fights and looks to become a serious contender in the UFC light heavyweight division. He returned to the UFC in 2009 after a six-year break and secured a unanimous decision victory over Igor Pokrajac followed by a split-decision win against Eliot Marshall.

The well-rounded card also features a middleweight battle between Yushin Okami (25-5) and Mark Munoz (8-1); a welterweight fight featuring Jake Ellenberger (22-5) and John Howard (14-4); and a lightweight fight between Takanori Gomi (36-1) and Joe Stevenson (36-11).

I think I’ll post two more releases before calling it a night.

MLB & Stand Up 2 Cancer Announce A New Virtual Initiative

    by , under MLB, SU2C

I’m always a proponent of Stand Up 2 Cancer and anything that brings us a step closer to beating this horrid disease, I’m always in favor. MLB which has been a partner with Stand Up 2 Cancer for the last few years has announced a new program in which fans can buy a “virtual” piece of their favorite stadiums, a base, a suite, or a pitcher’s mound and dedicate them to a loved one. Here are details from MLB and SU2C.

DEDICATE A VIRTUAL PIECE OF A FAVORITE BALLPARK AND STAND UP TO CANCER WITH “STAND UP STADIUMS” ON MLB.COM

Fans Can Pay Lasting Tributes To Loved Ones Touched By Cancer And Support Innovative Cancer Research
July 27, 2010 (Los Angeles/New York)Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C), the charitable initiative supporting groundbreaking research aimed at getting new cancer treatments to patients in an accelerated timeframe, and MLB.com, the official Web site of Major League Baseball, announced today a new online program for fans to contribute directly to cancer research while honoring loved ones touched by cancer with customized baseball virtual goods from their favorite ballparks.
“Stand Up to Cancer is thrilled to continue our long-standing partnership with Major League Baseball, through MLB.com and Stand Up Stadiums. It’s a platform that allows baseball fans everywhere to help make real progress against cancer,” says SU2C co-founder Laura Ziskin. “As a person living with cancer, I also know that this tribute space will make a personal difference in the lives of patients, survivors, and all of us in the fight.”
The program, MLB.com Stand Up Stadiums, will be supported at launch by a public service announcement created by MLB.com and SU2C that will be shown on ballpark video boards and available at MLB.com and Club Web sites. This initiative will give fans the opportunity to make a donation to SU2C online at MLB.com/standupstadiums and receive virtual seats, suites, bases and pitcher’s mounds from any of the 30 Major League Baseball ballparks, each with customized branding and personal messages to honor loved ones impacted by cancer.
After choosing their favorite team and ballpark, fans can select the virtual piece of the stadium they’d like to dedicate. The minimum donations will be tiered based on the items available, including $5 per ballpark seat, $100 per suite, $200 per base and $500 per pitcher’s mound. Individual donations at each tier may be increased as desired.
Before completing the donation, fans can enter a dedication name, write a personal commemorative message and upload a digital photograph to customize their virtual items.  Fans will be able to preview their items before ordering in a special team-branded gallery page. The donor will have a unique web page link to display and share the virtual item with friends, families, co-workers and others touched by cancer via e-mail and across social networking platforms.

“Stand Up Stadiums present a compelling online vehicle to honor loved ones and rally fans in the fight against cancer,” said Dinn Mann, executive vice president, content, MLB.com. “The virtual ballparks provide a convenient way to donate, to spread the word interactively, and as an extension of Commissioner Selig’s, and the industry’s, commitment to the cause.”

And MLB Network will join several other networks in airing the 2nd Stand Up 2 Cancer Special on September 10 at 8 p.m. ET/PT.

    It’s A Tuesday Linkage Thing

by , under ACC, Boxing, CBS Sports, DirecTV, Erin Andrews, ESPN, Fox Soccer Channel, HBO Sports, Mike and Mike, MLB, NASCAR, NFL, Red Sox, TV Ratings, World Cup

Shuffling between offices again today and I could be called back to the home office so I’m trying to squeeze linkage in right now.

Last night, I appealed for sports media questions and comments and I still would more queries before doing a mailbag post. As I said in the original post, if you have a question about the sports media or have a comment about sports broadcasting or even a constructive criticism of the blog, I’ll be happy to take them. Send the questions to kzfone@gmail.com, put your first name and last initial plus your town. I hope to make this a semi-regular occurrence if this is successful.

    Let’s do the linkage now.

Brian Lowry of Fox Sports says sometimes the DVR is the perfect way to watch a sporting event.

USA Today’s Michael Hiestand analyzes the ratings from some of the events from the weekend.

Joe Posnanski provides his two cents on the Mitch Albom controversy.

CNBC’s Darren Rovell notes that in just a short five months, the relationship between Dallas Cowboys rookie wide receiver Dez Bryant and Under Armour is in shambles.

Darren reports that a ticket company took a major gamble on the World Cup in South Africa and was left holding a lot of unsold inventory in the bag.

    Here’s a video of Darren’s story.

Mike Farrell of Multichannel News talks with new DirecTV head honcho Michael White about the future of the company.

Farrell asks White about bringing in more regional sports networks to offer subscribers.

Laura Bassett of the Huffington Post writes about Erin Andrews’ appearance on Capitol Hill today pushing for tougher anti-stalking laws.

Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe looks into the falling TV and radio ratings of the Red Sox.

Pete Dougherty in the Albany Times Union is happy that he won’t have to hear ESPN Radio’s Mike & Mike call the 2nd Monday Night Football game on September 13.

Keith Groller of the Allentown (PA) Morning Call writes that a former local high school basketball standout is now dabbling in local cable TV work.

Leonard Shapiro from the Washington Post says ESPN’s Pam Ward would like to call NFL games. Learn how to call college football games first and then we’ll talk.

Tom Jones of the St. Petersburg Times notes that the Tampa Bay Rays are in the top 10 of all MLB teams in regards to local TV ratings.

Sarah Talalay of the South Florida Sun Sentinel says Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow has signed with Jockey to endorse men’s underwear.

Tom Jicha of the Sun Sentinel says the Miami CBS affiliate will have plenty of shows devoted to the Dolphins this season.

Mike Bianchi of the Orlando Sentinel prefers the access the ACC provides reporters as compared to the SEC.

Barry Horn of the Dallas Morning News says the Texas Rangers continue to do well in the ratings.

Barry notes that ESPN’s E:60 will profile a local college football player who’s battling more than a game right now.

Mark Norris of the Morning News has an obituary for ESPN Dallas bureau producer Leah Siegel who died of breast cancer Monday.

Ed Sherman in Crain’s Chicago Business says strong corporate sales for the 2012 Ryder Cup at Medinah could be a sign of a recovery economy.

Rick Morrissey of the Chicago Sun-Times says Cubs pitcher Carlos Zambarano didn’t do himself any favors by staging an apology to his teammates on ESPN instead of meeting with them personally.

Phil Rogers of the Chicago Tribune writes that Zambarano should have thought twice about going on ESPN before apologizing to his teammates about an outburst.

Terry Vandrovec in the Sioux Falls (SD) Argus Leader catches up with CBS golf analyst David Feherty.

Lance Pugmire of the Los Angeles Times says HBO Sports is not confident that a Manny Pacquaio-Floyd Mayweather fight will happen this year.

Pugmire has the Mayweather camp angry over HBO’s statements to the Times.

Tom Hoffarth of the Los Angeles Daily News says life is not imitating art with Entourage’s storyline about putting an NFL team in the City of Angels.

Sports Media Watch says national MLB TV ratings are even with last year.

SMW has some ratings news and notes.

SMW says the Brickyard 400 had its lowest ratings ever on ESPN.

Phillip Swann at TV Predictions says DirecTV could be adding Fox Soccer Channel and Fox Soccer Plus in HD very soon.

That will do it for us today.

ESPN2 Airs MLS All-Star Game on Wednesday

    by , under ESPN2, ESPN3.com, MLS

ESPN2 continues its MLS coverage with the live airing of the 2010 All-Star Game from Houston. A team of MLS All-Stars including the LA Galaxy’s Landon Donovan will take on Manchester United from the English Premier League. This is rather unique and something that could actually make me watch. I like soccer, but I’d rather watch the EPL over MLS. I’ll definitely be interested in Wednesday’s All-Star Game.

    2010 MLS All-Star Game Wednesday on ESPN2

Landon Donovan and MLS’s Best vs. Manchester United of the English Premier League

Mexican National Team Striker Javier Hernández to Make Manchester United Debut

ESPN2 and ESPN3.com will present live coverage of the 2010 MLS All-Star Game Wednesday, July 28, beginning at 8:30 p.m. ET from Reliant Stadium in Houston, Texas. The special presentation of MLS Game of the Week series will feature the MLS All-Stars versus Manchester United, a team that has won or finished second in the past five English Premier League seasons and one of the legendary clubs in professional soccer.

The match, to be aired in high definition, is expected to be the Manchester United debut of Mexican national team striker Javier “Chícharito” Hernández, the first Mexican to sign with United. A highly sought-after transfer for Man U, Hernández scored two goals for Mexico in the 2010 FIFA World Cup.  Manchester United’s roster for the game is also expected to include: Former Welsh national team captain Ryan Giggs, former England national team player Paul Scholes, Portugal’s Nani, former Netherlands goalkeeper Edwin Van der Sar, and more.

Fresh off leading the U.S. Men’s National Team to its historic 2010 FIFA World Cup performance, Los Angeles Galaxy’s Landon Donovan, the league leader in assists, will lead a roster of 18 top-tier MLS players against Manchester United, which won the Premiership for three straight seasons (2006-’09). Other MLS All-Stars include the league’s leading goal scorer, Los Angeles Galaxy’s Edson Buddle; New York Red Bulls’ Juan Pablo Angel, Columbus Crew’s Guillermo Barros Schelotto and more.

JP Dellacamera and John Harkes, ESPN and ABC’s lead soccer commentator team for the U.S. National Team and MLS, will call the action, with sideline reporter Allen Hopkins. Rob Stone, Alexi Lalas and Julie Foudy will host the studio coverage including pre-game, halftime and post-game segments live from Reliant Stadium. Coverage will also include live, in-game interviews with select coaches and/or players.

Nice to see JP and Harkes back together again. Too bad they couldn’t have been teamed up in South Africa.
