This just in. Westwood One Radio has named Kevin Harlan as the new voice of Monday Night Football for this upcoming season. It’s a natural choice as Kevin worked most of the Monday Night Football games last season. If you remember earlier this year, Marv Albert stepped down as the announcer. Harlan will partner with Boomer Esiason. Here’s the press release.

New York, NY – June 29, 2010– Westwood One announced today that veteran NFL broadcaster Kevin Harlan will join Boomer Esiason as the lead play-by-play voice for Monday Night Football and Super Bowl XLV. Harlan becomes only the fifth regular Monday Night Football play-by-play announcer since the CBS Radio/Westwood One national radio broadcast began in 1978. Harlan follows in the footsteps of Marv Albert (2002-2009), Howard David (1996-2001), Jack Buck (1978-1984, 1987-1995) and Don Criqui (1985-1986).
“Anyone who has ever heard Kevin call a game knows exactly why we are thrilled to add an announcer of his caliber to our NFL talent roster – full-time,” said Gary Schonfeld, President of Westwood One Network. “Fans, stations and advertisers are going to be very happy this fall.”
“I am honored to have been selected as part of Westwood One’s Monday Night Football broadcast team with Boomer Esiason,” said Harlan. “I am truly humbled by the great voices that have held this position, including one of the legends of broadcasting, Marv Albert.”
“Kevin’s detailed descriptions and infectious energy will have NFL fans nationwide huddled around their radios,” added Howard Deneroff, Executive Producer of Westwood One Sports. “I am looking forward to a super season as Kevin and Boomer continue the long legacy of great broadcast teams that have brought the game to life for millions of listeners on Monday nights.”

Kevin Harlan was the play-by-play voice of select Monday Night Football games throughout the 2009 NFL season, as well as for the NCAA Men’s Basketball Final Four on Westwood One from 2003-2007. Harlan currently calls NFL games for CBS Sports, where he has worked continuously since 1998, after having served in the same capacity for Fox Sports since 1994. He also spent nine seasons (1985-93) as the radio voice of the Kansas City Chiefs, and this marks his 26th consecutive season broadcasting the NFL. Harlan also is well-known nationally for his basketball broadcasts, describing both CBS Sports’ coverage of the NCAA Men’s Tournament and the NBA on TNT for more than a decade. Prior to that, Harlan spent nine seasons as the voice of the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Good move by Westwood One.
