ESPN Sports Saturday returns to ABC with another two hour block and viewers get to see Rick Reilly’s Homecoming. I’ve never seen it, but I know some who have and the reviews aren’t necessarily good. Then again, these are people who are convinced ESPN can do nothing right. So here’s a preview of this week’s edition of ESPN Sports Saturday.
ESPN Sports Saturday on ABCHomecoming with Rick Reilly (r) and guest Joe Mauer
The new two-hour weekly ESPN Sports Saturday on ABC returns Saturday, April 10, at 4 p.m. ET with a new episode of Homecoming with Rick Reilly featuring Minnesota Twins’ catcher Joe Mauer, followed by the sports highlight show Winners Bracket. Hosted by Michelle Beadle and Marcellus Wiley, Winners Bracket counts down the 16 best sports stories of the week in an off-beat and humourous fashion. SportsCenter’s Hannah Storm anchors ESPN Sports Saturday.
Hosted by Reilly, an 11-time Sportswriter of the Year, Homecoming challenges that old adage, “You can’t go home again.” In the 60-minute episode, hometown hero Mauer is interviewed at his alma mater, Cretin-Derham Hall High School in St. Paul, Minn. Former Twins’ general manager Terry Ryan and Baseball Hall of Fame President Jeff Idelson were in the audience of more than 3,500, which also included Mauer’s family and other supporters. Highlights include the 2009 American League MVP talking about what it means to play for his hometown team and his experience playing in three MLB All-Star games, home movies of Mauer as a toddler batting lefty, his Grandpa Jake and mother teasing him about his love life and revisiting his childhood home.
