NFL Previews for Week 11

by , under CBS Sports, ESPN, Fox NFL Sunday, Fox Sports, NBC Sports, NFL, NFL Today, Sunday Night Football

We go to the NFL TV partners and what they’ll be discussing on their pregame shows as well as the storylines they’ll be covering over the weekend.

Beginning with ESPN and the features you’ll see on the pregames shows on Sunday and Monday.

ESPN’s Weekend and Monday NFL Studio Features

ESPN’s Sunday NFL Countdown will preview the day’s matchups Sunday at 11 a.m. ET with Chris Berman and analysts Cris Carter, Mike Ditka, Tom Jackson and Keyshawn Johnson. ESPN senior analyst Chris Mortensen and NFL insider Adam Schefter will provide headlines and league news.

The two-hour program will include reports from Rachel Nichols covering the Atlanta Falcons at New York Giants, Sal Paolantonio in Baltimore for the Colts at Ravens, Ed Werder in Dallas for Redskins at Cowboys, and Michael Smith covering the New York Jets at New England Patriots. Other highlights:

4th Down Decisions: On Sunday night, Patriots coach Bill Belichick made a coaching decision to go for it on fourth down and two yards at his own 28-yard line. The play didn’t work and ultimately led to the Patriots loss against the Colts. Belichick is one of several NFL coaches who have studied the work of a former Cal-Berkeley economics professor – who advocates coaches being much more aggressive going for it on fourth down. Greg Garber examines Belichick’s decision and whether strange mathematical symbols and theories should intersect on the football field.

The Island: No position is more isolated on a football field than cornerback. When left in one-on-one coverage, it’s often stated that cornerbacks are out on “the island.” Pro Bowl cornerbacks Champ Bailey and Nnamdi Asomugha share their knowledge – and Keyshawn Johnson takes a visit to “the island” with Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis as his guide.

Colts D: Symbols of Success: The Colts defense has lost three starters for the year, but, instead of talking X’s and O’s, Colts head coach Jim Caldwell is talking Chinese characters. He’s told his team about the symbol for crisis – it includes one character meaning danger, the other standing for opportunity or crucial moment. Bob Holtzman reports on how the symbols have been metaphors for the Colts’ perfect season thus far.

Mayne Event – Maurice Jones-Drew’s Revenge: Maurice Jones-Drew leads the league in rushing touchdowns – and could have had one more if not for kneeling at the one-yard line against the Jets last Sunday. Some thought it was a strategy play, but in this week’s Mayne Event, Kenny Mayne finds out Jones-Drew was getting revenge – and on whom.

Soundtracks: Chargers-Broncos Rivalry: The Chargers and Broncos have been the rivalry to watch in the AFC West. Battling for first place in the division along with a fair share of bad blood can make for some interesting sights and sounds in this week’s Soundtracks.

Wide Receiver Demo: The Island: Countdown’s former Pro Bowl wide receivers Johnson and Carter take to the demo field to show how they attacked cornerbacks on “the island” and which wide receivers are most dangerous to defend one-on-one. Johnson and Carter debate whether the “cover corner” is a dying breed in today’s NFL, as Randy Moss suggested earlier this season.

Start ‘Em or Sit ‘Em with Matthew Berry and Merril Hoge: ESPN’s fantasy football guru Matthew Berry and NFL analyst Merril Hoge debate which players to start or sit this weekend.

Berman, Carter, Ditka, Jackson and Johnson will pick the biggest games of the day and tell fans which players will make the biggest impact in NFL’s Week 11 action. The list of game picks will be posted on www.espn.com/sundaycountdown after the show.

MONDAY NIGHT COUNTDOWN, 7 P.M. ON ESPN

Monday Night Countdown with Berman, Carter, Ditka, Jackson, Johnson, Mortensen and Schefter (in Bristol) and Stuart Scott, Matt Millen and Steve Young (at the MNF game in Houston) will review Sunday’s games and preview Monday Night Football. The 90-minute, pre-game show will lead into the kickoff of the Tennessee Titans at Houston Texans (8:30 p.m.) game, featuring Mike Tirico, Jon Gruden and Ron Jaworski.

Reporters Suzy Kolber (Titans) and Michele Tafoya (Texans) will cover the teams. Other highlights:

Soundtracks: DeMeco Ryans: Texans Pro Bowl linebacker DeMeco Ryans may be the best player who still is not a household name in the NFL. The 2006 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year is wired for sound as he battles Maurice Jones-Drew in a game earlier this season.

ESPN The Magazine’s For Love or the Game: Matt Schaub: Monday Night Countdown and ESPN The Magazine will feature Texans quarterback Matt Schaub this week. Schaub’s wife, Laurie, and his teammate David Anderson will battle to see who really knows Schaub better.

WEEKLY MONDAY NIGHT COUNTDOWN SEGMENTS
TEAMS AT 20
Every 20 minutes reporters Tafoya and Kolber will update news from the teams in their preparations for the game, beginning with NFL Live at 3:30 p.m.

FIELD PASS Countdown offers an all-access look at pre-game preparations as the players get ready for kickoff. Analysts will also breakdown the important storylines and key players before the game.

C’MON MAN Countdown personalities share their head-scratching plays from Week 11.

In addition, Monday Night Football’s Tirico, Jaworski and Gruden will preview the night’s match-up, with Mortensen and Schefter covering breaking news from around the league, and the Countdown analysts offering their “Lead Pipe Lock” predictions for the game.

NFL MATCHUP, SUNDAY 3 A.M. AND 7:30 A.M. ON ESPN

NFL Matchup with host Sal Paolantonio and analysts Merril Hoge and Ron Jaworski will preview the weekend’s games by bringing viewers inside the film room for the Xs and Os analysis of the matchups. The 30-minute program – taped each week at NFL Films in Mt. Laurel, New Jersey – highlights team strategy and game planning. This week’s features:

Jets @ Patriots: Patriots Offense – Jaworski goes ‘Inside the Matchup’ to clarify how the Patriots can use an extra offensive lineman or a tight end to help protect against the Jets’ complex blitz schemes.

Jets @ Patriots: Mark Sanchez – Hoge pulls out hisCoaches Clicker’ to highlight how rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez needs to be more disciplined with his footwork in the pocket.

Chargers @ Broncos – Hoge shows how San Diego can use screens to provide a pseudo running game.

Redskins @ Cowboys – Tony Romo is the most blitzed quarterback in the NFL. Jaworski illustrates how Romo and the Cowboys’ offensive line have struggled to recognize and adjust to blitz pressure.

Colts @ Ravens – Hoge spotlights how the combination of player alignment and Manning’s ability to manipulate defenders makes it nearly impossible to stop the Colts offense on certain plays.

Seahawks @ Vikings – The Vikings are 8-1 for the first time since 1998, due in no small part to Brett Favre. Matchup goes ‘Beyond the Film Room’ onto the field for a glimpse of Favre when he’s playing quarterback.

Eagles @ Bears – Hoge reveals how Donovan McNabb needs to make quicker reads and throw with more accuracy in the red zone if the Eagles want to avoid wearing out their field goal kicker.

Titans @ Texans – Jaworski displays how the Titans have used Vince Young’s talents wisely both to help him feel comfortable and to take advantage of Chris Johnson, arguably the most dangerous running back in the game.

Over to Fox Sports where Fox NFL Sunday co-host Terry Bradshaw has it out for Cowboys wide receiver Roy Williams.

BRADSHAW ON ROY WILLIAMS: “HE’S NOT PROVING ANYTHING” – Coming off four straight wins, the 6-3 Dallas Cowboys were nearly shutout at Lambeau Field last Sunday, losing to the Green Bay Packers. “Dallas lost that game when Roy Williams dropped that pass and then fumbled, too. He may have finished with 100 yards receiving, but he’s certainly not worth two first-round picks and all that money Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is paying him. He’s not proving anything,” said four-time Super Bowl winning quarterback and FOX NFL SUNDAY co-host Terry Bradshaw. “Last Sunday was their chance to make a statement. If they beat the Packers, they have the Redskins and the Raiders coming into Dallas and they are 9-2 with five games remaining and they have the NFC East all wrapped up. Instead, they brought the Giants back into the picture.”

BILLICK: “CONFIDENCE IS A MISSING ELEMENT FOR THE BROWNS RIGHT NOW” – “As usual, it comes down to the simple things,” NFL on FOX analyst Brian Billick says regarding the Browns’ problems. “Every team has talent but the difference between legitimate talent, NFL talent and star talent is so very subtle. So much of it really does come from confidence and that’s something that’s missing from the Cleveland Browns right now. It’s a horrendous cycle and sometimes you just have to start from ground zero.”

On the NFL Today on CBS, James Brown will interview embattled Cleveland Browns coach Eric Mangini.

PHIL SIMMS

(On Bill Belichick’s fourth down call in Indianapolis game): It’s been documented that this was a premeditated thought. The whole week leading up to the game, he decided he was going to do this. I always tell people this about coaches: if it’s fourth-and-one from the one, the last play of the game, coaches already know what play they’re going to call. They determine those kinds of things during the week. So do I agree? It’s not about agreeing. Would I have done it? No, I would not have done it. What gets overlooked is not having timeouts. If he would have had one, I believe he would have won the challenge because in my mind Kevin Faulk was past the 30 yard line and clearly had possession of the football. It’s a general rule in the NFL to use your timeouts, no matter what, in the first half. In the second half, save them regardless of almost any situation, unless it’s a scoring opportunity. Save those timeouts for the end of the game.

(On how Patriots will respond to N.Y. Jets after loss to Colts): Emotionally there’s a little bit of a hangover from it because you put so much into the game. It was such an emotionally charged game. Then it’s talked about by the media, your family, your friends, your teammates. Sometimes it’s hard to put that behind you. If I was the coach, I would hope we do something good early to get the emotions and everything going our way in the game against the Jets.

(On Jets coming off five losses in last six games): The Jets have played a lot of close games. It’s how you play the last couple minutes of the game that many times determines if you’re a playoff team. They have not reacted well when the pressure is on – on either side of the ball – when it comes to those moments late in the game. Overall, the Jets have done a lot of good things. I’ve watched all of their games and Mark Sanchez has had a good rookie year. Has it been great? No, but it’s very good.

(On Jets-Patriots rematch): When the Patriots played in Week 2 they did not block the New York Jets very well. But now there’s a lot of film out there. There have been a lot of things to look at as the NFL season has settled in. Can the Jets get guys free and running at Tom Brady consistently like they did in Week 2? My first thought is, I have to see it to believe it. Because they’re experienced and had more time to prepare, I think the Patriots will handle the Jets’ blitz much better this time around.

NOTE: The Sporting News/Sports Business Journal/Sports Business Daily listed its Top 25 Football Broadcasters and CBS Sports was well represented: Gary Danielson (1), Phil Simms (4), Verne Lundquist (8), Jim Nantz (10), Greg Gumbel (17), Dan Fouts (20), Gus Johnson (24) and Dick Enberg (25).

DAN FOUTS

(On AFC West race): There’s no question this is a two-horse race between Denver and San Diego. There’s no doubt in my mind, this race will go down to the end.

(On Chargers being different team from last time they met Denver): They’re healthier number one. They’ve gotten healthier on the offensive line and at running back with LT (LaDainian Tomlinson), and defensively they’re playing a lot better. They had the huge loss in Jamal Williams and they’ve kind of gone to playing nose tackle by committee without him. The biggest thing is that they’ve regained their health, as well as LT and Shawne Merriman being healthy helps as well.

(On San Diego): Although the running game is important, it’s still the passing game that’s winning games for San Diego. With those receivers, along with LT and Darren Sproles coming out of the backfield along with Antonio Gates, they have so many weapons. The Chargers are not all that concerned with running the ball. They know they can win by throwing it.

(Keys to game for Denver): If you look back to the first game that Denver won, they got two touchdowns in the return game. So if you take those out of the game, it’s a different plan defensively for Denver as well. They got five sacks in that game. That would be my game plan if I were Mike Nolan –continue to put pressure on Philip Rivers and don’t let him beat you. Of course, that’s easier said than done.

(On Denver’s quarterback situation): It will be interesting to see how many reps Chris Simms gets in practice this week and how many reps Kyle Orton gets due to his ankle. He had an ankle injury last year when he was with the Bears that caused him problems. It’ll be interesting to see how long Josh McDaniels takes to make the decision on his quarterback.

(On how pivotal this game is for San Diego): There’s no question that if San Diego loses then they lose the tiebreak to Denver. And, a loss in conference impacts the wild card race down the road with other AFC teams as well. You don’t want to lose any game. You certainly don’t want to lose a divisional game with a team you’re tied to that’s already beaten you. And you don’t want to lose a conference game. San Diego would say that all games are critical, but this one, mathematically, would be devastating.

NOTE: This week Dan Fouts and LaDainian Tomlinson were the leading vote getters among the 53 players and coaches selected as the Greatest Chargers of all-time during the team’s 50th Anniversary season.

TRIP IN THE NFL ON CBS WAY BACK MACHINE…

In commemoration of THE NFL ON CBS celebrating its 50th year broadcasting the NFL, footage from historic highlights will be featured during each game. Included among the clips this week during the Pittsburgh-Kansas City game will be a highlight of Super Bowl XIV when Pittsburgh’s Terry Bradshaw and John Stallworth connect for a 73-yard touchdown pass on their way to a 31-19 win over the Rams on January 20, 1980.

And NBC tries to hype a matchup of two NFC teams, Chicago at Philadelphia. A glamor Patriots-Colts game it’s not.

PLAYOFF IMPLICATIONS AT STAKE WHEN BEARS HOST EAGLES ON “SUNDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL” – AMERICA’S NO. 1 SHOW

“Teams know that a game like this could decide a playoff spot.” – Football Night’s Dungy

“This is a must-win game.” – Football Night’s Harrison

NEW YORK – Nov. 18, 2009 – The Chicago Bears (4-5) host the Philadelphia Eagles (5-4) on "NBC Sunday Night Football" – the No. 1 show in America – in a game with playoff implications for both teams.

Coverage begins with "Football Night in America," Sunday at 7 p.m. ET with Bob Costas hosting live from inside the stadium. Al Michaels (play-by-play), Cris Collinsworth (analyst) and Andrea Kremer (sideline reporter) call the action from Soldier Field.

Dan Patrick and Keith Olbermann will co-host "Football Night" from NBC's 30 Rockefeller Plaza studios joined by Super Bowl-winning coach Tony Dungy, two-time Super Bowl winner Rodney Harrison and Sports Illustrated's Peter King. "Football Night's" Tiki Barber will report from Invesco Field at Mile High on the Chargers-Broncos game.

DUNGY: "Thanksgiving is when you start looking at playoff implications. It's always better when both teams are in a similar situation. Head-to-head is the first tie breaker and teams know that a game like this could decide a playoff spot."

HARRISON:
"This is a must-win game for two teams that have been inconsistent and underachieving."

BEARS VS. EAGLES: The Bears lead the all-time series 27-10-1, including three playoff games (Eagles 2-1). The Bears have won the two most-recent regular-season meetings in 2007 and 2008, but the Eagles won the five preceding games, including a Divisional Playoff game in 2001. The teams' most famous game was the 1988 Divisional Playoff game, dubbed "The Fog Bowl" because a dense fog permeated the playing field and severely hampered visibility. The contest was won, 20-12, by the Bears.

BEARS-EAGLES IN PRIMETIME:
Since NBC acquired the NFL's premiere primetime package in 2006, the Chicago Bears are 4-5 and the Philadelphia Eagles are 0-7 on "Sunday Night Football." The Bears defeated the Eagles, 24-20, last year on "Sunday Night Football" by securing a fourth-quarter goal-line stand.
This is the third SNF appearance for the Bears this year. They were defeated, 21-15, by the Green Bay Packers on the road in Week 1 and by the Atlanta Falcons, 21-14, in Week 6. The Eagles lost to Dallas, 20-16, at home on SNF in Week 9. They are scheduled to travel to New York to face the Giants in Week 14.

SUNDAY NIGHT IS 300-YARD NIGHT:
Seven quarterbacks have passed for 300-or-more yards nine times on "Sunday Night Football" this season. Colts QB Peyton Manning has accomplished the feat three times. Bears QB Jay Cutler passed for 300 yards in a 21-14 loss to the Falcons in Week 6. Earlier this season (Weeks 2-5), winning quarterbacks passed for 300-or-more yards in four consecutive weeks, the first time in Sunday Night history.

Following are the nine 300-yard passing performances this season on SNF:

Week 2 Eli Manning, Giants, 330 yards vs. Cowboys – W 33-31

Week 3 Peyton Manning, Colts, 379 yards vs. Cardinals – W 31-10

Week 3 Kurt Warner, Cardinals, 332 yards vs. Colts – L 31-10
Week 4 Ben Roethlisberger, Steelers, 333 vs. Chargers – W 38-28
Week 5 Peyton Manning, Colts, 309 yards vs. Titans – W 31-9
Week 6 Jay Cutler, Bears, 300 yards vs. Falcons – L 21-14
Week 9 Tony Romo, Cowboys, 307 yards vs. Eagles – W 20-16
Week 10 Tom Brady, Patriots, 375 yards vs. Colts – L 35-34
Week 10 Peyton Manning, Colts 327 yards vs. Patriots – W 35-34

And that does it for this post.

College Football Previews for Week 12

by , under CBS College Sports, CBS Sports, College Football, FSN, NBC Sports, SEC

Let’s post some college football previews. Usually I do this on Friday night, but I have some time tonight so I’m doing this a night early.

Starting with Fox Sports Net and its SEC Gridiron Live program complete with predictions.

SEC Gridiron LIVE – Week Twelve

They Said It:

Randy Cross on the Philips HD MVP Dexter McCluster

· “Well you see those highlights and that is not a video game, this is for real. Imagine what the Tennessee defenders had to deal with. 170-175 pounds, can run a little heavier at times, but man when he gets in the air, what can’t this guy do?”

David Pollack on Auburn and South Carolina having bye weeks

· “Both of these teams have bye weeks before their state championships. You’ve got Auburn and Alabama in the Iron Bowl, that is a huge game every single year and that’s probably the most important game on the schedule. Clemson – obviously the same thing with South Carolina playing them. Both of those teams, the next week they’re playing their championship games. That’s going to be huge, maybe they can sneak up and steal their in-state rivals.”

David Pollack on Mark Ingram’s chances to win the Heisman

· “He should be the front-runner for the Heisman because he’s got the best stats, he’s getting the ball, and he gets the quality opponents. You’ve got to consider that when he’s facing top defenses he is shredding these guys – 178 yards a game against ranked opponents.”

Randy Cross on Ryan Mallett

· “Two years of eligibility left, six-foot-seven, throws a gorgeous football; I look at this kid and I say look, the completion percentage has got to be better, you’ve got to up it against those SEC West teams and you can’t throw it to the other guy. The key for that – get your receivers together. For him, the tight end has been a great position for him the past couple of weeks; it’s really made a gigantic difference for Ryan Mallett. DJ Williams, welcome to the party.”

Randy Cross on Vanderbilt’s chances against Tennessee

· “This is their bowl game. Everyone was very excited up in Nashville last year. They got to the Music City Bowl and played Boston College, they were tickled to death. This is your bowl game. You can go to Knoxville and you can win this game. This is your recruiting tool – treat it that way.

5. Myron Lewis, Vanderbilt

4. Reshad Jones, Georgia

Social Media Sound Off:

In response to the Thumb It In question – Who is most likely to pull off an upset this weekend?

· Brent Shepard – Vandy over Tennessee. Tennessee has had A LOT of major distractions this week. We’ll see how that plays out on the field.

· Mark Fernandez – LSU. I can’t believe Ole Miss is favored in this one.

Stephen Gobbell – Ole Miss in a close one. The big factor for Ole Miss is Snead.

Stephanie Staley – RUN DMC!!! Hotty toddy!! Hope LSU doesn’t put a hit out on our little man!

Will CarruthMississippi State creates some balance by throwing the ball and running Dixon. The Dawgs win in a shootout!

Billy SatterfieldTennessee wins big by at least 4 touchdowns and Eric Berry breaks the interception return yards record with 2 INTs.

In response to the Top 5 “Big Hitters” of the SEC –

· Brent Leatherwood – Is this even a contest? Berry delivers a slobber knocker every time he touches the field. He is a human highlight film on how to tackle and knock the ball loose. Seriously, is this really a discussion? It’s EV and everyone else is vying for second.

CBS Sports’ Lead College Football Analyst Gary Danielson NAMED TOP FOOTBALL BROADCASTER

The Sporting News/Sports Business Journal/Sports Business Daily listed its Top 25 Football Broadcasters and CBS Sports was well represented: Gary Danielson (1), Phil Simms (4), Verne Lundquist (8), Jim Nantz (10), Greg Gumbel (17), Dan Fouts (20), Gus Johnson (24) and Dick Enberg (25).

AUDIBLES with Gary Danielson

(On LSU-Ole Miss): Both LSU and Ole Miss have finally found their footing. They struggled early. They struggled with how much people expected from them. Ole Miss has really found their game and are playing their best football. With the emergence of Dexter McCluster, who has worked his way into being a mid-first-round draft pick, Houston Nutt has found one of those players that he can ride. When he finds a playmaker like that, he will ride them and it makes them a very dangerous team. They already were really good on defense.

This is a really high stakes game in this conference. Both of these teams are expecting to win to a make this a successful season. And both fan bases will be very disappointed if they don’t win this game. The coaches will come under criticism for not winning this game. What makes this conference so tough is that the fan base just expects these wins. There is no logic behind it; someone has to lose the game. But both sides expect this game as a win to signature their season.

(On Importance of SEC Non-conference games): It’s a given that an undefeated winner of the SEC , Alabama or Florida, will have one of the slots for the BCS national championship. However, to insure a spot, should the winner not be undefeated they will need some help next week from two conference rivals. Georgia faces Georgia Tech and South Carolina takes on Clemson. Should Tech and Clemson knock off the two SEC partners, I feel both the computers and voters will have a problem selecting a one loss SEC Champion over either TCU or Cincinnati should they finish the season undefeated. There are two big games remaining to protect the conference champion if the unlikely happens. Namely Florida or Alabama losing prior to the SEC Championship.

CBS College Sports has a doubleheader on Saturday.

CBS COLLEGE SPORTS NETWORK’S FOOTBALL ACTION FEATURES AIR FORCE AT NO. 19 BYU AND TULSA AT SOUTHERN MISS

NBC Sports will air its last Notre Dame game of the season on Saturday as the Fighting Irish take on UConn. It may also be the last appearance of Charlie Weis on NBC as well.

NOTRE DAME HOSTS UCONN IN FINAL HOME GAME OF 2009 SEASON THIS SATURDAY ON NBC SPORTS “The Huskies have been in every game until late in the fourth quarter.” - Haden

NEW YORK – Nov. 19, 2009 – The Fighting Irish of Notre Dame (6-4) will host the UConn Huskies (4-5) in the first-ever meeting between the two programs and the final 2009 home game for the Irish this Saturday on NBC Sports.

Coverage begins at 2:30 pm ET from Notre Dame Stadium in South Bend, Ind. with Tom Hammond handling play-by-play duties, Pat Haden providing analysis and Alex Flanagan reporting from the sidelines.

HADEN ON THE MATCHUP: "Notre Dame will once again have its hands full with a solid UConn team coming to South Bend. Coach Randy Edsall has gotten as much out of his talent as any coach. While they have lost five games, the Huskies have been in every game until late in the fourth quarter."

NOTRE DAME-UCONN MATCHUP: This is the first-ever meeting between the two schools. It will be Notre Dame's 137th different opponent in its 121-year history. Notre Dame began the season by defeating first-time foe, Nevada, 35-0. The Irish have won their last 12 games against teams making their first appearance at Notre Dame.

Notre Dame is coming off a 27-22 loss at No. 8 Pittsburgh. UConn had a bye last week. In their last game, the Huskies lost, 47-45, to No. 5 Cincinnati on the road.
HUSKY RESILIENCE: In a poignant halftime feature, Jimmy Roberts examines the resilience of the UConn football team following the tragic death of cornerback Jasper Howard earlier this season.
NOTRE DAME VIEWERSHIP UP NINE PERCENT: Through seven games, viewership for Notre Dame on NBC Sports is up nine percent vs. 2008 (3.7 million viewers vs. 3.4). Saturday's game against UConn is NBC's final broadcast of the season. The USC-Notre Dame game on October 17 drew 6.5 million viewers, the most for a Notre Dame game on NBC Sports since September 9, 2006 when the Penn St.-Notre Dame game drew 6.9 million viewers.
NOTRE DAME ON NBCSPORTS.COM: NBCSports.com will once again offer a live post-game webcast, which will originate from Notre Dame Stadium and extend the NBC Sports television broadcasts by providing an unprecedented depth of Notre Dame coverage, including live coverage of Coach Charlie Weis' press conference.

My Take on The Top 25 Football Announcers

by , under Al Michaels, Boomer Esiason, CBS Sports, College Football, Cris Collinsworth, Dave Sims, ESPN, Fox Sports, Jon Gruden, Mike Patrick, NBC Sports, NFL, Westwood One Radio

Lists by publications are made to stir debate and also give them a bit of publicity. The list that was published today by The Sporting News and sister publication Sports Business Daily/Sports Business Journal certainly does that. Already, I’m a bit perturbed that college and NFL announcers are mixed together as are play-by-play callers and analysts.

If it were up to me, I would separate the play-by-play men from the analysts. But that’s me. Just for kicks, here’s the list in full.

1. Gary Danielson, CBS
2. Cris Collinsworth, NBC
3. Al Michaels, NBC
4. Phil Simms, CBS
5. Kirk Herbstreit, ABC/ESPN
6. Troy Aikman, FOX
7. Ron Franklin, ABC/ESPN
8. Verne Lundquist, CBS
9. Joe Buck, FOX
10. Jim Nantz, CBS
11. Mike Tirico, ESPN
12. Brad Nessler, ESPN
13. Brent Musburger, ABC/ESPN
14. Jon Gruden, ESPN
15. Daryl Johnston, FOX
16. Ron Jaworski, ESPN
17. Greg Gumbel, CBS
18. Sean McDonough, ABC/ESPN
19. Todd Blackledge, ESPN
20. Dan Fouts, CBS

21. Bob Papa, NFL Network
22. Mike Patrick, ABC/ESPN
23. Chris Fowler, ESPN
24. Gus Johnson, CBS

25. Dick Enberg, CBS

I’m not enamored with this list. I’ll separate play-by-play and analysts and go from there.

Play-by-play and this includes college football and NFL.

1. Al Michaels – NBC’s Sunday Night Football
Probably the best all-around play-by-play voice ever. He’s called so many big games and rises to the occasion whenever there’s a big moment. Al does a tremendous job in doing football and yes, he does the wink-wink with the point spread, but there’s no one better at setting the scene, giving perspective and breaking down complicated moments than Al. Tops at play-by-play hands down.

2. Ron Franklin – ESPN College Football
Being forced out by ESPN after the college basketball season. Very classy. After Keith Jackson, one of the best ever to call college football. He’s a great fit at games. Why ESPN took him off the primetime package of games is beyond me. Ron is a very comfortable fit in the booth whether he’s calling the Big 12, SEC or other big conferences. ESPN is mistreating Ron this season.

3. Verne Lundquist – SEC on CBS
Calls a very good game. One of the announcer who just exudes college football. He wasn’t happy when CBS took him off the NFL after the 1998 season, but then he started on a tremendous run calling the SEC and he’s become quite comfortable calling the games. Whenever there’s a big game in the SEC, Verne is there and he’s very smooth. Love him and Gary Danielson.

4. Sean McDonough – ESPN/ABC College Football
One of my favorite announcers, his best sport is baseball, but he’s very good at college football and is unfortunately partnered with one of the worst analysts, Matt Millen. Sean is not afraid to call out bad plays and he’s also very good in spotting trends. Works extremely well with his partners to draw out the best analysis. Unfortunately, Millen’s credibility is shot.

5. Jim Nantz – NFL on CBS
He doesn’t scream. Jim gives the nuts and bolts of a game quite well. Has grown into a very good play-by-play man. He works well with Phil Simms. Jim won’t raise the decibel level on your TV. He’ll just provide you with the facts which is what you want.

6. Ian Eagle – NFL on CBS
He’s not on the list, but he should be. And he’s becoming a very good all-around announcer, calling the NFL, the NBA, college basketball and tennis. CBS would do everyone a favor in promoting him to the 3rd or 4th announcing team next season.

7. Dick Enberg – NFL on CBS
Dick has slipped over the past few seasons. One of the announcing elite, but he has made mistakes and miscalls. Still is better than many younger announcers.

8. Tom Hammond – Notre Dame Football on NBC
I think NFL Network should have hired Tom to replace Bryant Gumbel last season. He calls Notre Dame football quite well on NBC and only calls one NFL game a year, the Wild Card playoff game for the Peacocks. I’m glad he got to call 8 Notre Dames this season. He should have a full slate of games.

9. Sam Rosen – NFL on Fox
Sam is a very good nuts and bolts guy. He’s also a very good NHL announcer calling the New York Rangers on MSG Network. He’s always there with down and distance, who made the tackle and sets the scene very nicely. Sam should get more recognition for his work.

10. Gus Johnson – NFL on CBS
Yes, Gus yells. Yes, Gus screams. But yes, Gus can give you a signature call that gives the fan the exclamation point and proper perspective. The best case in point was during the Denver-Cincinnati game in Week 1. Tremendous stuff.

11. Mike Patrick – ESPN/ABC College Football
ESPN took Mike off the NFL when it lost the Sunday Night package and gained Monday Night Football. I thought Mike, Paul Maguire and Joe Theismann were perfect on SNF and should have remained the team for MNF, but what do I know? Mike is quite solid on college football. There are times when I wonder what hair color Mike is going to be from week to week, but that’s minor. He does get a tad too excited, but he’s very good.

12. Brad Nessler – ESPN/ABC College Football
There was a time I didn’t like Brad, but he’s grown on me. I can see Brad becoming a main guy for college football once Brent Musburger decides to retire from announcing. I like his style. He’s not forceful. His style is perfect for college football. I do hope to see him on some bigger games down the road.

13. Kenny Albert – NFL on Fox
A second generation announcer, Kenny has risen to the “B” team for Fox Sports. He’s been with Fox since the network got the NFL package in 1994 and he’s been a very good fit at the network. Another hockey guy who can call the NFL very well. I would take Kenny over Joe Buck any day.

14. Bob Papa – NFL Network
Bob does a great job calling the New York Giants on radio and does a very good job doing the games for NFL Network. Sometimes, the Thursday Night games are stinkers, but no fault to Bob as he doesn’t schedule the games. Bob is another guy who does multiple sports, NFL, boxing, basketball and does all of them well. He lets the action come to him and does a very good job in spotting trends. I’m hoping to see him get more games down the road.

15. Greg Gumbel – NFL on CBS
Greg was the #1 guy on the NFL on CBS and I liked he and Phil Simms. For some reason, CBS took him off, put him on the NFL Today for two seasons, then placed him on the #2 team with Dan Dierdorf. Greg is another guy who won’t go over the top. A very good nuts and bolts announcer and will give you the straight facts. Very good announcer.

16. Dave Sims – Westwood One Radio
Dave is one of the best announcers on radio, bar none. There was a time when he was so busy, you would see him doing Big East football on ESPN Regional TV, hear him doing the NFL on Westwood One Radio, basketball on ESPN and then perhaps a radio talk show guest spot. He calls Sunday Night Football on Westwood One and is a great listen. Calls the game well, spots the players, gives down and distance and is our eyes when we have to hear the radio call. Very good play-by-play man.

You may notice I’ve omitted Joe Buck who I think is horrible on the NFL. I’ve also left off Brent Musburger who I don’t think is a top notch college football announcer. He was a better host and is a better at doing college basketball, but I don’t think he belongs in the upper echelon of that sport either. Again, you can debate away.

Now to the analysts.

1. Phil Simms – NFL on CBS
I enjoy listening to Phil. He’s not afraid to admit he’s wrong. He studies tape every week and can spot things in the booth that other analysts cannot. I enjoy listening to his analysis whenever he calls a game.

2. Gary Danielson – SEC on CBS
I’ll agree that he’s the best college football analyst in the game today. He’s become an ardent apologist for the SEC which I find strange, but overall, Gary is an analyst who can spot a play before it happens. Very enjoyable listen. He and Verne Lundquist have become one of the best announcing teams on TV today.

3. Todd Blackledge – ESPN/ABC College Football
Todd and Gary traded positions a few seasons back. Remember Todd was teamed with Verne in the early aughts? He then left CBS to return to ESPN and then CBS hired Gary away from ESPN. Anyway, Todd has become a premier analyst in college football. Working with Brad Nessler, he’s an analyst who does a very good job in the booth. And his features finding great eating establishments in each town he visits have become must see TV.

4. Cris Collinsworth – NBC’s Sunday Night Football
There are times when Cris makes me scratch my head, but overall, he’s a quite good. When he did Thursday Night Football on NFL Network, he had to carry Bryant Gumbel for two seasons and that wasn’t easy. Cris is so good that he could be a studio analyst or a game analyst and for three seasons was both! It’s not easy to replace John Madden, but after 10 weeks of the NFL season, Cris has made the transition quite nicely.

5. Pat Haden – Notre Dame Football on NBC
It’s too bad that Notre Dame has fallen off the nation’s radar because Pat Haden would be considered one of the elite analysts. Pat used to be the top college football analyst for CBS and also did Sunday Night Football games on CBS Radio. Did them both well. Pat is also not afraid to scold bad quarterback play when he sees it.

6. Troy Aikman – NFL on Fox
I never thought I would see Troy in the booth when he was a player. I didn’t think he had TV in him, but he’s become quite good. At first, he was brought along by Daryl Johnston and Cris Collinsworth as he rose up the ladder on Fox. Now, he can stand alone and I wish he weren’t teamed with Joe Buck so we can really hear some good analysis. Troy is one of the best analysts in the NFL and I enjoy his work.

7. Bob Griese – ESPN/ABC College Football
Ok, taco comment aside, Bob is one of the better analysts in college football. He was teamed with Keith Jackson for a very long time and they formed one of the better announcing teams from the late 1980′s through the 1990′s. Bob may have slipped a bit, but he’s still good at spotting trends, noting passing routes and good on the telestrator.

8. Dan Dierdorf – NFL on CBS
I like Dan’s work from his days on Monday Night Football through now. Still keeps up with the game and gives a good perspective having been in the trenches on the offensive line.

9. Dan Fouts – NFL on CBS
Dan can analyze the NFL or college football with the best. He’s worked with some of the best play-by-play men, Al Michaels, Keith Jackson, Verne Lundquist and his current partner, Dick Enberg. Dan also had to deal with the failed Monday Night Football experiment with Dennis Miller. But through it all, Dan has persevered. His analysis is quite good. He’s had broadcasting in his background thanks to his dad who worked for CBS in the 1960′s. It would be nice if Dan had the opportunity to call a playoff game or two for CBS.

10. Jon Gruden – ESPN’s Monday Night Football
In less than one season, Gruden has shown that he can be one of the better analysts if he chooses to remain on TV. The thing is that no one believes he’s going to stay in the broadcast booth for long, despite signing a multi-year deal with ESPN this week. There were times earlier this season when I could not tell him or fellow analyst Ron Jaworski apart, but now I can. Jon has shown some humor and he’s not afraid to do so at his own expense. He’s very good and if he decides to stay in TV he can be one of the best analysts ever.

11. Daryl Johnston – NFL on Fox
Daryl has done TV for so long, it’s hard to remember that he got his start with CBS in 1998. He’s very smooth and yes, he has to endure Tony Siragusa who interrupts him quite often, but Daryl is such a team player that he seems to have fun with it. Moose’s analysis is solid and while he won’t be on the “A” team on Fox, he does get to call one playoff game a season and does it well teaming up nicely with Kenny Albert and Goose.

12. Craig James – ESPN/ABC College Football
Whenever Craig is in the booth, I enjoy his work. When he was in the studio, especially for ABC with Doug Flutie, I didn’t. I can’t explain it. But Craig is a good listen.

13. Ron Jaworski – ESPN’s Monday Night Football
Ron has a tendency to overhype things, but coming into the booth to replace Joe Theismann two seasons ago was a good thing. To be honest, he didn’t wow me last season when he started with Mike Tirico and Tony Kornheiser, but with Jon Gruden, has formed a good analysis team.

14. Boomer Esiason – Monday Night Football, Westwood One Radio
He’s good in the studio on the NFL Today, but when he’s on radio with either Marv Albert or Dave Sims on Monday Night Football, Boomer really shines. I like listening to his analysis and he’s not afraid to speak out when he has to. He and Marv are a good team, but I did enjoy when Boomer worked with Howard David.

15. James Lofton – Sunday Night Football, Westwood One Radio
James and Dave Sims are a very formidable radio team. James can spot trends as well and can give perspective on routes from his wide receiver days. Plus, being a Hall of Famer gives him a lot of credibility.

So you have my list of top football broadcasters.

Late Night Linkage

by , under CBS Sports, Comcast, DirecTV, Erin Andrews, ESPN, ESPN Ombudsman, Fox Sports, FSN, Heidi Watney, MASN, MLB, NBA, NBC Sports, NFL, NHL, TNT, TV Ratings, USFL, Versus

It’s been quite some time since I have done late night links. Usually, I reserve late night for posting the press releases, but since I still don’t have a TV and there was a minimal amount of sports that I wanted to see, I was quite productive posting the release earlier tonight so I can do some linkage for you now.

We’ll start with ESPN Ombudsman Don Ohlmeyer to whom I’ll give credit for discussing the network’s handling of the Steve Phillips affair, the reporting of the Tom Cable domestic violence story, Bob Griese’s suspension and finishing off with the 30 for 30 documentary series. All quite candid and I was glad to see Ohlmeyer address the Phillips story, although I would have preferred if he had done it earlier.

Editor & Publisher reports that Chicago Sun-Times baseball writer Chris DeLuca has been promoted to the paper’s top spot in its sports department. Thanks to Indiana University’s National Sports Journalism Center for the link.

We’re finding out more about the creepy stalker who videotaped Erin Andrews in the nude not just once, but several times.

Rick Kissell of Variety writes that the NFL continues to dominate the network primetime ratings.

R. Thomas Umstead of Multichannel News says Monday Night Football steered ESPN to a cable primetime win last week.

Hibah Yousuf of CNNMoney.com writes that CBS is 90% sold for Super Bowl XLIV.

Toni Fitzgerald of Media Life Magazine tells us that the NFL continues to set ratings ablaze this season.

Jay Fitzgerald of the Boston Herald reports that the Celtics and Comcast are teaming up to provide Video On Demand programming

I’m not sure why, but NESN.com is offering a photo gallery of Heidi Watney.

The Lehigh (PA) Express-Times says Fox Sports Net and Gatorade are teaming up to air a special, recreating high school football rivalries across the nation.

Here’s the press release anouncing the program.

In the Washington Post’s DC Sports Bog, Dan Steinberg who’s been keeping track of the on-air Tony Kornheiser-Mike Wise radio feud says Mr. Tony decided to not to throw verbal barbs on Wednesday.

Tim Lemke of the Washington Times writes that FedEx Field isn’t just used for the DC NFL team exclusively anymore.

In his blog, Tim talks about how FedEx Field hopes to be the site of the FIFA World Cup Finals in either 2018 or 2022.

MASN has announced it will air some 200 college basketball games this season.

Jack Bogaczyk of the Charleston (WV) Daily Mail says the West Virginia-Rutgers Big East regular season finale will be aired by ESPN on December 5.

National Geographic Channel Programming for Next Few Days

by , under National Geographic Channel

If you’ve been watching National Geographic Channel this week, then you know it’s Expedition Week, where programs have been exploring recent discoveries and major expeditions. I have a preview DVD set of the entire week of programming and it’s been tremendous to watch. Plus, you learn a few things in a very entertaining way.

Let’s give you some of the documentaries that will fill out the rest of Expedition Week, plus give you some other upcoming programming on NatGeo. Tomorrow night, we look at how we can make Mars habitable for humans.

EXPEDITION WEEK: Mars: Making the New Earth
Thursday, November 19 at 9PM ET/PT

The notion of bringing Mars to life ? transforming a cold, dry, uninhabitable desert into a living planet ? called terraforming, has been around for almost a century. Initially just a science fiction concept, it has become a subject of serious scientific investigation. NASA astrobiologist
Dr. Chris McKay has spent 30 years researching extreme environments to understand the potential of such planetary engineering. On the surface, the red planet’s freeze-dried world of rocks, ice and dust looks like an unlikely place to plant a garden. But rocks and minerals found by the Mars rovers show it must once have had warmer, habitable living conditions. Now, using photorealistic CGI visualizations, we’ll make a science fiction dream of Mars — a world of trees, rivers and blue skies — a plausible future.

On Friday, National Geographic looks at the evidence behind Simon of Peraea, the man believed to be the King of the Jews.

EXPEDITION WEEK: The First Jesus?
Friday, November 20 at 9PM ET/PT

He was called the King of the Jews, believed to be a Messiah. Just before Passover, the Romans beheaded him and crucified many of his followers outside Jerusalem. But his name was not Jesus … it was Simon, a self-proclaimed Messiah who died four years before Christ was born. Now, new analysis of a three-foot-tall stone tablet from the first century B.C., being hailed by scholars as a “Dead Sea Scroll on stone,” speaks of an early Messiah and his resurrection. Was Simon of Peraea real? Did his life serve as the prototype of a Messiah for Jesus and his followers? And could this tablet shake up the basic premise of Christianity? We’ll go to Israel to assess this unique and mysterious artifact, including testing by a leading archeological geologist and comprehensive review of the letters, script and content by a Dead Sea Scroll expert. Then, from Jerusalem to Jericho, we’ll investigate key archeological ruins that could help prove Simon was indeed real — all of which just might sway the skeptics.

And next Monday, National Geographic Channel airs The Lost JFK Tapes: The Assassination. This looks very fascinating.

THE LOST JFK TAPES: THE ASSASSINATION
Monday, November 23 at 9PM ET/PT

For over 45 years, news footage and radio reports of Kennedy’s assassination and the days following have quietly languished in Dallas – first kept under wraps by the news stations who owned them, then in the vault of a museum dedicated to preserving the memory of the day Kennedy was cut down. Now, for the first time, this remarkable record will be assembled in an unprecedented two-hour documentary. The film will detail the events of those four days in a way not seen in more than four decades, letting the images unfold in real time. That’s what sets this film apart – a “you are there” approach. The film features this footage in its original form – for the first time since it was broadcast in 1963.

Video: “Preview: THE LOST JFK TAPES”-
On November 22, 1963, hundreds of hours of news footage, radio reports, audio recordings and home movies captured history as it was chaotically unfolding.

So, stuff to look forward to. National Geographic Channel never fails to entertain and educate.

LINDSEY VONN AND NBCOLYMPICS.COM FORM PARTNERSHIP FOR CONTEST TO DESIGN HER HELMET FOR THE 2010 VANCOUVER OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES

“This is your chance to be with me in Vancouver,” - Lindsey Vonn

Once-in-a-Lifetime Opportunity to Design World Cup Skiing Champion Lindsey Vonn’s Olympic Helmet

NEW YORK – Nov. 18, 2009 - NBCOlympics.com invites fans to join in the Countdown to Vancouver and participate in the "Design Lindsey's Helmet" contest, beginning November 23. Lindsey Vonn, one of the most successful Alpine skiers in U.S. history, is challenging fans to convince her that their artwork is what she wants to feature on her helmet while soaring down the slopes during the upcoming 2010 Vancouver Winter Games.

"This is your chance to be with me in Vancouver," said Vonn. "Whether you're an aspiring graphic designer or just someone who likes to doodle all day, it doesn't matter if you snow plow down the bunny slopes, tree-ski in waist deep powder, or just hang in the lodge, I want to see your designs."

To enter the contest, fans as young as 13 years old can log on to NBCOlympics.com/lindseys-helmet/ and enter original artwork by December 21. A team of judges will narrow the submissions down to a final three designs, which will be showcased on NBCOlympics.com the first week of January. Fans will then have the opportunity to log on and vote to help Lindsey decide on the winning design.

The voting closes on January 11 with the winner to be announced in late January. The grand prize winner for the "Design Lindsey's Helmet" contest will be awarded a trip for two to Vail, Colorado, one of the world's top ski resorts. Prizes also include a pair of Head skis and bindings and a Uvex helmet and goggles.

"Now that the World Cup season has started, I'm getting very excited for the Olympics," said Vonn. "I really wanted to do something that allowed my fans to share in my Vancouver experience, and this is what I came up with. I'm looking forward to seeing what people create for my helmet."

In support of the contest, NBCOlympics.com is undertaking several different promotional tactics to alert fans about the challenge, including online ads that will run on the web site, 30 second-spots to run on NBC and Universal Sports, and a grassroots campaign designed to reach out to art and design schools across the country as well as online and print-based lifestyle media outlets.

CLIP OF THE DAY

(click on link below to watch)

NBA TV’s Chris Webber talks about playing for Golden State Warriors head coach Don Nelson two different times during his career

**** **** **** ****

Pre-Game Show

Ernie Johnson, Chris Webber and Kevin McHale

McHale on Golden State’s team chemistry after trading (Stephen) Jackson to the Charlotte Bobcats: “When the players come out and say it will be better when Stephen Jackson goes, which they started a couple of weeks ago, that is really an indication that it is very disruptive. I think (the Warriors) will play free and easy tonight.”

Webber on the Golden State Warriors: “When you are on a team that has a bad feeling in the locker room, it is really good to get a breath of fresh air. And I think for Golden State this is a breath of fresh air. When you win and when you lose it is good to just be able to concentrate on your team and the game and not everything that is going inside and outside the locker room.”

McHale on coaches getting teams back on track after turmoil: “You have to stay with what you believe in and you can’t be changing. Some coaches say, ‘tonight we are going to play defense, tomorrow we are going to play offense.’ The players get confused and pretty soon they say that the coach has no idea what he is talking about. Stay with your pattern, do what you do. The message has to be the same every single day in the locker room and then the players start buying in and believing. I think that Nellie (coach Don Nelson’s) message is going to be the same. Score a lot of points.”

Webber on playing for Golden State’s coach Don Nelson: “I actually got two chances to play for (Nelson), once when I was a young rookie and I think I could have made better decisions then…definitely, I know I could have made better decisions then. He could have as well, as far as explaining the game to young guys. Then I got to play with him my last year in the league for about 10 games and I’ve seen a difference in the way he handles players. To me, he is a player’s coach, definitely a good personality. But that may set some guys up and I think that could be a double-edged sword at times.”

Webber on the Cleveland Cavaliers’ adjustment to center Shaquille O’Neal: “I think they are a really good team. Right now LeBron (James) is finding his way, finding out how to play with Shaq (O’Neal) because you don’t want to get in Shaq’s way and still continuing to be a leader. I think they are going to be okay, they have great players. It is going to take some time to mesh.”

McHale on most important part of the Cavaliers besides LeBron James: “I think when Mo Williams started playing like Mo Williams of last year during All-Star that really changed up their team. I think it took a little while for Mo to say, ‘I have to go play,’ because Mo wasn’t playing well and I like the fact that he said, ‘this is on me, I have to play better.’ You like when players do that. Players are always passing the buck saying it is not my fault. He said this is my fault and I think he is the guy that is going to make them go.”

Webber on the hype surrounding Bucks guard Brandon Jennings: “Right now, I believe the hype. I believe that this is not a mistake and that he is very skilled and can shoot off the dribble, shoot the open three and he can pass. It is too early, I usually don’t judge this early but I am going to give him the heads up and say he is the real deal.”

McHale on Bucks guard Brandon Jennings: “What he has really been able to do is mature. He went over to Europe last year and he said the culture was a huge shock to him. He matured so much. I think that was the best thing that happened to him.”

McHale on whether a team will pick up Allen Iverson: “It is going to have to be the right team at the right time. I would have to say right now, as of today, no.”

Webber on Allen Iverson: “If he can’t go to the Lakers because of Kobe Bryant, if he can’t go to Cleveland because of the influence of Shaq…I would not have him around young players. He is the guy that has to score; he is the guy that wants the ball. Do you want to honestly sell tickets and let him shoot 50 times or do you want someone that can help your team win? I don’t think a team in championship mode is going to be willing to take a risk and draft him after the experiment at Detroit last year.”

***** ***** *****

Halftime Report

Johnson, Webber and McHale

McHale on Thunder forward Kevin Durant: “(Durant) can flat out score the basketball in many ways. He got a good start with Oklahoma City tonight. The thing is that he is so long. He can just go over the top of people and make shots.”

Webber on Cavaliers guard Anthony Parker: “There is no place better to be a shooter, unless you are playing with (Steve) Nash. To be around the best player with the ball in his hands (in LeBron), Parker is going to get those shots up. In the second half, I’m going to be interested in looking at LeBron. I think he is going to turn his killer instinct on even more because he and Corey Maggette were getting into it a little bit earlier. So I think he is going to amp it up and get guys just like Parker involved and force his will on this team.”

McHale on Golden State being under-manned: “One of two things can happen, you either get disheartened and say, ‘we are under-manned and say we can’t play, we can’t win.’ Or the guys can say, ‘I can shoot all I want because the coach can’t take me out.’ There is a point where they can say, ‘it doesn’t matter the coach can’t take me out,’ so maybe they will relax and play.”

***** ***** *****

NBA GameTime

Johnson, Webber and McHale

Webber’s assessment of the Cleveland Cavaliers: “I feel that by Shaq being out they are getting the rhythm. Everyone is getting to play. Guys are getting the ball when it matters most. If Shaq was playing, he would have had the ball. I think this is going to help. Even when (Anderson) Varejao comes back and guys are on the bench, I think it is going to help with their confidence later on in the playoffs.”

Webber on Golden State guard J.J. Hickson’s career high: “We heard that LeBron was working with him over the summer. I’m a big believer in chemistry and a big believer in guys that are on the bench that practice and go against the starters every day. I’m always like let those guys out of the cage because when those wild animals get out they have been waiting to play. He has that energy so I think this will work out well for him.”

McHale on Golden State’s play against the Cavaliers: “I did think they played a little looser without Stephen Jackson. The guys in the locker room were saying he needed to go, he wasn’t good here. He left and I thought they played with energy. I thought they played loose and had some chemistry out there.”

Webber on why he believes in the Atlanta Hawks: “I’m going to actually start to believe in Atlanta. Atlanta is a team I didn’t want to believe in. I didn’t like the fact that the guys were that young. I didn’t like the fact that they were happy to get to the playoffs and the antics that happened in the playoffs. I was rooting for them when they played against Boston and took them to seven games. This team made me a believer. They play like a veteran team which is something I thought they were never ready for. I never thought they had the mentality. Josh Smith is playing awesome this year. I think this team is ready to make some big steps this year.”

This brings us to quotes and notes from the Tony Barnhart Show on CBS College Sports.

NEWS, NOTES AND QUOTES FROM “THE TONY BARNHART SHOW” ON CBS COLLEGE SPORTS NETWORK

DIRECTOR OF THE BLIND SIDE JOHN LEE HANCOCK AND CO-STARS

PHILLIP FULMER AND TOM LEMMING, PLUS CBS SPORTS’ JIM NANTZ ON “THE TONY BARNHART SHOW”

CBS COLLEGE SPORTS NETWORKS THE TONY BARNHART SHOW, a new weekly one-hour primetime college football talk show featured John Lee Hancock, director of the new movie The Blind Side, along with two of its co-stars, CBS College Sports Network announcers Phillip Fulmer and Tom Lemming; plus CBS Sports’ Jim Nantz on Tuesday, Nov. 17 (9:00 PM, ET).

“Mr. College Football,” Tony Barnhart hosts the show along with Brian Jones. The hard-hitting program debates and analyzes the hot topics and issues facing college football both on and off-the-field.

The TONY BARNHART SHOW airs each Tuesday throughout the college football season at 9:00 PM, ET. Mike Aresco serves as Executive Producer. Tyler Hale and Stefan Van Engen produce.

* * * * *

The following are excerpts from the show:

(PHILLIP FULMER ON RETURNING TO COACHING):

Barnhart: Why do you want to coach? As crazy as this business is, why do you want to coach again?

Fulmer: Well I do because I enjoy it. I enjoy the competition. I enjoy putting teams together. I feel the same passion right now that I did when I took over 17 years ago at Tennessee…I’ve got something to prove and I want to get to a point where we’re competing for championships. I love being around it. I’m not ready to retire at all. I think I’ve got 10, 12 good years left of being an active coach. I love recruiting. I can go to any part of the country, you know, to do it, because we’ve recruited all over the country at Tennessee…But if the opportunity, the right opportunity, presents itself, I’m certainly going to look at it. And I think I’ll be interviewing them as much as they’re interviewing me at this point.

(TONY BARNHART ON NOTRE DAME):

How effective can any coach be at Notre Dame? The world has changed dramatically since Lou Holtz won Notre Dame’s last National title in 1988. An entire generation of players has grown up in a time when the school has just not been relevant on the national stage. In an age of Facebook and Twitter when almost every game is on television and the great players are staying closer to home, is it even possible to get enough of them to buy into the Notre Dame mystique to make the Irish a National Championship contender? I say no. We’ve talked about the decline of the Big Ten because of geography, weather and other factors. The same rules apply to Notre Dame, it’s still a great job because of the tradition and passion of the fans, but the next head coach had better walk into South Bend with his eyes wide open, there is a lot of work to do.

CBC makes the official announcement that it will air a second season of the wildly successful “Battle of the Blades” and we also discover that the production company behind the competition plans to license the show worldwide so expect a US edition sometime soon.

CBC-TV’S BATTLE OF THE BLADES RENEWED FOR SECOND SEASON

Groundbreaking Canadian series a ratings and advertising success story

CBC Television announced today that its hit series BATTLE OF THE BLADES, featuring world-class figure skaters and former NHL’ers, will return next fall for a second season. The 14-episode series sold out to live audiences every week, and wrapped up on Monday, Nov. 16 with an unconfirmed television audience of 1.736 million tuning in for the one-hour results finale.

Overall viewership has been tremendous, with an average of 1.749 million viewers 2+ watching the seven performance shows on Sunday evenings, and 1.332 million Canadians 2+ tuning in for the Monday night results shows. Combined, BATTLE OF THE BLADES reached one out of three Canadians with a total unduplicated reach of over 10 million.

“We could not be happier with the audience and advertising response to this truly Canadian series,” said Kirstine Stewart, general manager, CBC Television. “CBC continues to generate successful and relevant top-tier programming and the return of Battle of the Blades is another welcome addition to our star-studded lineup.”

The program’s unique format and mass appeal provided an ideal platform for advertisers. Season one sponsors DanActive, ARTISTRY Brands, McDonald’s and Kruger Products showcased their brands to millions of Canadians through innovative program integrations and sponsorship opportunities, including: co-branded vignettes; the DanActive Warm-up Zone; the ARTISTRY Style Studio; and signage and product sampling at the legendary Maple Leaf Gardens. Season two of BATTLE OF THE BLADES will provide even more customized opportunities for advertisers to connect with Canadians.

The overwhelming response to the show concept has led Insight Productions to look at expanding the franchise globally.

“We are thrilled that Battle of the Blades has captured such a wide and diverse male and female viewing audience,” said John Brunton, president & executive producer, Insight Productions. “It has tremendous international potential as a big name sports and entertainment brand, and we look forward to growing this franchise significantly over the coming years.”

Viewers can learn more about the competitors at www.cbc.ca/battle, the official online portal for the series and the source for everything about BATTLE OF THE BLADES. In addition to videos and behind-the-scene photos, the site offers viewers the opportunity to become fans of their favourite pair and track each participant’s activity as they strive to be the final pair remaining at the end of the series.

BATTLE OF THE BLADES is the brainchild of Kevin Albrecht with development by Sandra Bezic. BATTLE OF THE BLADES executive producers are John Brunton, Barbara Bowlby and Kevin Albrecht. It is produced by Insight Productions in association with CBC Television.

The NFL will utilize “flexible scheduling” on Sundays in Weeks 11-17. Flexible scheduling will ensure quality matchups in all NFL Sunday time slots in those weeks and give teams a chance to play their way onto primetime and into the late-afternoon 4:15 PM ET time slot on CBS and FOX.

For each of the flexible scheduling weeks with the exception of Week 17, the NFL will announce the start times of games on Sundays no later than 12 days prior to that weekend. To ensure a Sunday night game and doubleheader games with playoff implications in Week 17, the flexible scheduling decision for that Sunday may be made on six days notice.

So for the first two weeks of the flex schedule, the NFL has chosen to keep the preselected games in their primetime slots while making minor adjustments to the afternoon schedule. We’ll see what happens for Week 13 which has the Patriots-Dolphins in the 8:20 p.m. slot.

Throughout the interview, Harwell, 91, discusses his 55-year career in broadcasting with the Brooklyn Dodgers, New York Giants, Baltimore Orioles and Detroit Tigers, as well as the incurable cancer he was diagnosed with in September 2009. At the interview’s close, Harwell recites the speech he gave upon being inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame on August 2, 1981. Following the interview, MLB Network will re-air Studio 42 with Bob Costas featuring Major League Baseball umpires Don Denkinger, Bruce Froemming and Steve Palermo at 9:00 p.m. ET.

Highlights from the interview with Harwell include:

ON HIS HEALTH

This will be my last World Series, I think. Back in July, the doctors gave me six months to live, give or take a few months. I’m hoping to reach my birthday on January 25 but I’m pretty sure I won’t make the baseball season. But you never know as the Lord works wonders.

I’m not overwhelmed by the circumstances. One of the doctors said, “If you were my father, I’d say, don’t do anything, just relax and wait for the inevitable.” But I had great peace about that and closure to it and I knew God was in charge and whatever happens, happens for the best. I really have a lot of serenity and great support from my wife family and friends. It’s been so far a fairly easy task to accept it.

On Returning to Comerica Park on September 16

That was a great event for me. First of all, I addressed the team, which was a real honor. Jim Leyland had the whole team around. And after a couple innings, they sent me out there with a microphone and I said a few words of farewell. It was very heartwarming for me to see the way people felt about me.

The old voice hasn’t changed that much in 50 years and I thank mainly the genes, the good health the Lord gave me, and the fact I enjoyed the job so much. I never looked at it as work. It was something I got great pleasure out of; Getting to know the people in baseball, traveling with them, and being a part of that great Major League Baseball fraternity.

ON SUPPORT FROM FANS

I don’t think there’s any reason for this response except that I was the Tiger announcer. I showed up and did the best I could. I tried to be myself and my whole philosophy was the game was the main thing and don’t ever interfere with the game. People tune in to what the Tigers are doing. No matter whose doing the game, they’re going to tune in.

ON BEING A LOCAL MLB ANNOUNCER

I do feel like those people out there were my friends and I hope I was their friend. It is a unique association that you have with your listener. I really appreciate the fact that they’ve taken interest in me. I don’t know that I deserve that. All I tried to do was be myself. I wanted to broadcast the game that I thought I’d like to hear as a listener. I tried to give the score as often as I could. I let the play take over and fill in with anecdotes or historical information that maybe nobody else came up with. There were going to be some people who like you and some who don’t like you and you have to accept that when you start out.

On moving from the segregated South to Brooklyn in 1948

It was a little strange seeing a black man play against white competition. I accepted it and Jackie Robinson became a very good friend of mine. I played cards with him, played golf with him, rode the train with him. It’s the most exciting and most eventful thing that’s happened in sports history, the breaking of the color line by Jackie Robinson and Branch Rickey.

On leaving Baltimore IN 1960 and taking THE job WITH THE DETROIT TIGERS

So I made the jump and it was probably the best move I ever made because the people in Michigan have really been super. They’re great fans, it’s an original franchise, and they have a great passion for baseball.

ESPN previews what it will show this week in motorsports including the NASCAR season finale.

– Steve Mariucci on Bengals RB Bernard Scott who had a 96-yard kickoff return touchdown and 13 carries in place of starting RB Cedric Benson

And we go to Versus which premieres Patriots LB Junior Seau’s new reality show in December, but we get a sneak peek later this week.

NFL LEGEND AND PATRIOTS LINEBACKER TO TACKLE THE JOBS THAT MAKE SPORTS WORK IN NEW ORIGINAL SERIES ON VERSUS

'Sports Jobs With Junior Seau' Kicks Off With Two Episodes on Dec. 2;

VERSUS to Air Special Sneak Preview on Nov. 18 at 11 p.m. ET

NEW YORK, N.Y. (November 16, 2009) - On the field, on the ice, in the cage or behind the wheel, professional athletes have to be tough. But what does it take to do the behind-the-scenes jobs in sports? All-Pro linebacker Junior Seau is about to find out. In VERSUS' new original series, Sports Jobs with Junior Seau, the NFL legend trades in his helmet and pads and tries out the sometimes thankless, but extremely important, jobs across the entire sports world. VERSUS will air a special sneak preview of the show on Wednesday, November 18, at 11 p.m. ET. The 10-episode weekly half-hour series will debut in its regularly scheduled timeslot, Wednesday nights at 10 p.m. ET, beginning December 2, with two back-to-back episodes.

"This is the first show that gives fans a look at the people who make the games possible. These guys don't get the fame and recognition but they are just as talented and compelling as the players and they have just as much pride in their work," said Andy Meyer, Vice President of Original Programming for VERSUS. "We're very excited to have Junior Seau, one of the greatest players the NFL has ever seen, on VERSUS' team doing the every day jobs that make sports work."

In the sneak preview episode on November 18 Junior gets into the cage to help UFC fighter Forrest Griffin train for his bout against Anderson Silva at UFC 101 this past August in Philadelphia. Some of the other episodes will feature Seau working as the equipment manager for the Washington Capitals, as an IndyCar pit crew member, a college football writer for Sports Illustrated, a member of an arena conversion crew and as bullfighter at a Professional Bull Riders (PBR) event.

"Throughout my 19-year professional football career, I've had the great fortune to work with so many phenomenal people; from equipment managers to trainers to the field crew, it is because of these unsung heroes that I am able to be the best player I can be on the field," said show host Junior Seau. "I'm very excited to be part of show that allows me to do the jobs that are essential to a sport and make an impact on the overall effectiveness of an athlete or team."

A San Diego native, Seau began making a name for himself in football during his collegiate days at USC where he was an All-American player. In 1990, following his junior year college football season, he was drafted by the San Diego Chargers in the first round of the draft as the fifth pick overall. A Charger until 2002, Seau went on to play for the Miami Dolphins from 2003 until 2005 and was signed by the New England Patriots in 2006. Seau took a short break from football prior to the start of the 2009 NFL season for production of Sports Jobs, but after seeing how difficult some of the jobs actually were-including getting tackled by a bull during his bullfighter job with the PBR-Junior decided he'd rather take his chances on the field and returned to the Patriots team roster in time to play in the sixth game of the 2009 season.

The COMPLETE on-air schedule follows (ALL TIMES 10 P.M. ET UNLESS OTHERWISE NOTED, subject to change):

GIANTS STADIUM CONSTRUCTION CREW/DODGERS BATBOY (December 2)
In the first episode of the night, Seau will be working as part of the construction crew helping to build the new stadium for the New York Giants. In the night's second episode, Seau will wear Dodger blue and serve as the batboy/equipment manager during a Dodgers home stand against the Milwaukee Brewers.

NHL EQUIPMENT MANAGER (December 9, 11:30 p.m. ET)

The Washington Capitals travel with thousands of pounds of skates, pads, jerseys, sticks and pucks and being their equipment manager for the 2009/10 NHL season-opening road game at Boston is no small task.

ARENA CONVERSION TEAM (December 16)

In this episode Junior joins up with Boston's legendary "Bullgang" crew to convert the Boston Bruins ice into the Boston Celtics hardwood, and back again, in just 36 hours.

INDYCAR PIT CREW MEMBER (December 23)

The pressure is on as Junior learns how to jack up the car, fill it with gas, and change the tires - and do it all to have Scott Dixon's car back on the track in seven seconds.

LPGA CADDY (December 30)

Junior learns to read greens and minds, as he works a loop with LPGA and reality TV superstar Natalie Gulbis.

SPORTS ILLUSTRATED REPORTER (January 6)

From trying to land an exclusive interview to racing between the press box and the locker room, Junior tries to cover a game and make his deadline.

UFC CORNERMAN (January 13)

Junior joins UFC star Forrest Griffin's camp as he trains to take on Anderson Silva at UFC 101: Declaration in Philadelphia.

HORSE TRAINER (January 20)

He'll feed, groom, shoe, clean and care for racehorses, and then do the dirtiest job he's done yet - castrate a live horse.

PBR BULL FIGHTER (January 27)

Junior finds out first hand that keeping the riders from getting trampled and gored by a massive bull is one of the most dangerous jobs in all of sports.

I’m amazed there’s enough inventory for so many shows. My impression was that Seau just taped a handful of episodes. I guess there’s enough footage for an entire season. One more press release post and we’re done for the evening.

Gus Johnson’s Back Calling College Basketball

by , under Big Ten Network, College Basketball, Gus Johnson

Screamin’ Gus Johnson is back calling college basketball this season and that is a totally good thing. Even though he no longer calls Knicks games for MSG Network, it has freed him to work games for Big Ten Network in addition to CBS. Of course, it means that Gus will also call the NCAA Tournament in March as well. On Monday, Gus was in Bloomington, IN, the day after being in Oakland to call Chiefs-Raiders for CBS, to work the USC-Upstate at Indiana game for BTN.

While the game didn’t have the signature Screamin’ Gus call, we do have some nice highlights courtesy of Big Ten Network.

And BTN has created a page dedicated to Gus which is just tremendous.

The Winners of The Battle of The Blades Are…

by , under CBC, Figure Skating

Craig Simpson and former gold medalist Jaime Salé. Here’s the CBC press release. I do hope the show becomes available in the US. I keep hearing that this caught the imagination of the Canadian viewing public and the competition was quite good.

JAMIE SALÉ AND CRAIG SIMPSON ARE DECLARED

THE WINNING PAIR OF THE BATTLE OF THE BLADES

Winners receive $100,000 for donation to The Spinal Cord Injury

Treatment Centre (Northern Alberta) Society

The results are in and Canadian viewers have spoken. After seven weeks of intense competition, Jamie Salé and Craig Simpson were declared the final winners of the BATTLE OF THE BLADES, as voting results were revealed during tonight’s broadcast of the series finale. Salé and Simpson receive $100,000 for donation to their charity of choice: The Spinal Cord Injury Treatment Centre (Northern Alberta) Society (SCITCS).

“This has been an incredible journey,” said Simpson. “The opportunity to learn something different every week and try something new, it’s simply been exhilarating!”

“I’d like to thank our families, kids and everyone who helped us along the way,” added Salé. “This was an amazing commitment and sacrifice for everyone.”

The Edmonton duo has impressed audiences from early on in the competition. Judge Sandra Bezic praised their most recent routine as a fantastic culmination of all their work and judge Dick Button commended them for taking on dangerous moves and making them their own. Simpson was also the first male skater in the series to do a waltz jump and both he and Salé delighted audiences with their madcap tribute to Austin Powers. The fact that Simpson has suffered from a bad back during much of the competition makes their performances even more remarkable.

Shae-Lynn Bourne and Claude Lemieux along with Marie-France Dubreuil and Stéphane Richer are the runner ups in the competition. For their efforts, Make-A-Wish Canada and MA Fondation, the respective charities for both pairs, will each receive a $25,000 donation. The judges also congratulated both pairs for their outstanding efforts and for showing their full commitment to the sport of figure skating throughout the competition.

Tonight’s finale wraps up a competition that began with eight pairs performing over seven weeks to a variety of different musical themes. Each week saw increasingly complex routines as the number of pairs remaining in the competition raised the stakes higher and higher to collect viewer votes, impress the judges and go all-out to win the grand prize.

Viewers can learn more about the show at www.cbc.ca/battle, the official online portal for the series and the source for everything about BATTLE OF THE BLADES, including videos, behind-the-scene photos and information about each pair in the competition.

The Spinal Cord Injury Treatment Centre (Northern Alberta) Society (SCITCS) raises awareness for those living with spinal cord injuries by enhancing their quality of life through research, education and support programs. For over 20 years, Craig Simpson has raised money for SCITCS with over $1.5 million donated to date.

Make-A-Wish Canada grants wishes to children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich their experience with hope, strength and joy. Having a wish granted gives children a chance to take a break from being sick while creating memories that last a lifetime.

MA Fondation
seeks to save children from shaken baby syndrome and violence. Much of their funding goes to L’Hôpital Ste. Justine in Montreal, helping newborns with shaken baby syndrome, and L’Hôpital Marie Enfant, which cares for child victims of sexual and physical abuse.

Thanks to the CBC for sending the releases for Battle of the Blades every week.

NFL Network Previews Thursday Night Football and Talks About Belichick

by , under NFL Network

I have a couple of press releases from NFL Network for you. One previews Thursday’s game between Carolina and Miami. Another contains quotage from “The Coaches Show”. Take a gander.

‘The Marshall Plan’ Explains Why Panthers DE Julius Peppers Deserves What He is Paid

Exclusive: Dolphins Head Coach Tony Sparano & Panthers WR Steve Smith Are Wired For Sound

On NFL.com/Live:

Mike Mayock Breaks Down the X’s and O’s Of a Successful Dolphins Wildcat

NOTABLE & QUOTABLE…

  • “A lot of teams try to emulate the wildcat, but they don’t have the commitment to it that Miami does. The Dolphins spend a good amount of time working on it in practice, developing different wrinkles each week and they have the personnel to make it work.” – DEION SANDERS on the Dolphins’ wildcat
  • “These two teams are clawing their way back into the playoff picture. It’s power running versus power running.” – BOB PAPA on the Dolphins-Panthers matchup
  • “He throws the ball so well from the run and he’s got enough arm to make all the throws down the field – short, intermediate and long. I like his physical skill set. Right now, what he has to do is continue to play, go through the ups and downs of a season and see if he can handle the bigness of the National Football League. There’s no doubt in my mind that he can…I think Chad Henne is here to stay. He’s a good young player with a very promising future.” STEVE MARIUCCI on Dolphins QB Chad Henne
  • “Receivers like being the feature guy…but he’s just going to have to get his catches when he can and make plays when he can. He’s just not going to have the numbers [of a Pro Bowler] so he’s going to have to deal with it.” STEVE MARIUCCI on Panthers WR Steve Smith

Thursday Night Football

NFL Network began its fourth year airing the exclusive Thursday Night Football primetime package with a ratings record. The Bears-49ers matchup was NFL Network’s most-watched season opener – seen in 2.75 million homes – and it was the top-rated cable show of the day.

NFL Network has assembled an award-winning team to cover its “Run to the Playoffs” slate. This season marks the debut of new game analyst MATT MILLEN who returns to the broadcast booth after a successful NFL analyst stint with FOX and CBS from 1995 to 2000. Millen is joined by second-year NFL Network play-by-play announcer BOB PAPA, the radio voice of the New York Giants who has called a pair of Super Bowls. Papa was also the lead voice for NFL Europa games including the 2007 World Bowl on NFL Network and has worked seven Olympics. MARK TEITELMAN and CRAIG JANOFF produce and direct Thursday Night Football.

RICH EISEN hosts NFL Network’s Thursday Night Kickoff, a two-hour pregame show from NFL Network’s Los Angeles studios. Eisen, a two-time Sports Emmy nominee in the Studio Host category, is joined by fellow Sports Emmy nominee STEVE MARIUCCI, a former NFL head coach with the San Francisco 49ers and Detroit Lions who also served as Brett Favre’s quarterback coach in Green Bay; MARSHALL FAULK, who won a Super Bowl XXXIV ring with the Rams, earned 2000 NFL MVP honors and three Offensive Player of the Year awards (1999-2001) and has been selected to seven Pro Bowls; and DEION SANDERS, a two-time Super Bowl winner who was 1994 Defensive Player of the Year and an eight-time Pro Bowler who holds the NFL record with 18 career return touchdowns. Coverage also includes on-site reports from insider JASON LA CANFORA, who is in his first season with NFL Network after an award-winning newspaper career with The Washington Post and reporter SCOTT HANSON, host of NFL Network’s NFL RedZone channel that airs every Sunday. Senior producer BARDIA SHAH-RAIS joins coordinating director JEN LOVE on the pregame, halftime and postgame shows. MIKE MURIANO is coordinating producer of the pregame, halftime and postgame shows. ERIC WEINBERGER is executive producer of NFL Network.

NFL.com LIVE features live programming including live “look-ins” of Thursday Night Football, game highlights and instant analysis from NFL Network talent. From the NFL Network studios in Los Angeles, FRAN CHARLES, JAMIE DUKES, BUCKY BROOKS and MICHAEL FABIANO provide expert analysis, commentary and fantasy information with contributions from Faulk, Mariucci and Sanders. Hanson, along with SOLOMON WILCOTS provide live reports from the stadium. New this year, Playbook analyst MIKE MAYOCK gives instant X & O analysis of key plays right after they happen from NFL Films headquarters.

Here’s the quotage.

Quotes from NFL Network’s ‘The Coaches Show’ Regarding the Patriots-Colts Game

“The Coaches Show” airs TONIGHT at 8:30 PM ET & 10 PM ET

NFL Network’s resident coaches Mike Martz, Steve Mariucci and Brian Billick weigh in with their thoughts regarding Sunday night’s Patriots-Colts matchup and head coach Bill Belichick’s decision to go for it on fourth down.

“It’s not like it was a knee-jerk decision. Bill Belichick is a lot of things, but rash and impetuous is not one of them. This was not a ‘Yee haw, let’s go do this’ decision. Everything is always calculated with Belichick. [The Patriots] have a history of this like no other and basically what it says is that he has more faith in his offense to get one yard than he does in his defense to keep Peyton Manning [contained].” – Billick on Belichick’s decision

“Sunday night, I thought he should have punted, but when you look back on it now on film, I can understand why he did what he did.” – Martz on Belichick’s decision to go for it on 4th and 2

“You can go from, if it works, a genius, to [if it doesn’t], you’re the village idiot.” – Billick on the varying criticisms that could result from Belichick’s decision, based on its effectiveness

“I probably would have punted it…If you go for it and make it, you’re going to win the football game. If you don’t make it, you give Peyton Manning just under two minutes to go thirty yards. If you punt it, you give Peyton Manning just under two minutes to go around 65 yards. The Patriots defense could not stop Manning [all night], so it was a real gutsy call to go for it and finish them off and it just didn’t work out.” – Mariucci on if what he would have done

For more thoughts from Martz, Mariucci and “special guest” Billick on last night’s game and additional content, including:

· Mariucci 1-on-1 with Titans head coach Jeff Fisher

· Martz on how the Bengals stifled Ben Roethlisberger in the red zone

Please tune into ‘The Coaches Show’ airing at 8:30 and 10:00 PM ET.

That’s all. I’ll probably be back later.

Andre Agassi to Answer Your Questions This Week & Tonight on Tennis Channel

by , under Tennis Channel

Coming this Thursday, tennis star Andre Agassi will answer the public’s questions on his new autobiography that has made waves. He’ll take part in an online chat at Tennischannel.com.

But before that, he’ll be on Tennis Channel tonight to talk about the book and his life. Take a look at the press release.

ANDRE AGASSI TO ANSWER FANS’ QUESTIONS

DURING LIVE WEB CHAT ON WWW.TENNISCHANNEL.COM

Tennis Channel’s Online Visitors Can Pose Questions to Retired Superstar Nov. 19 at 1:15 p.m. ET, in Conjunction with the Release of his Autobiography, Open

Q&A Session Follows Half-Hour Interview on Tennis Channel

Tonight at 9 p.m. ET and Online Signed Book Raffle

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 16, 2009 – Tennis Channel will give fans direct access to retired star Andre Agassi during an exclusive, live Web chat on www.tennischannel.com Thursday, Nov. 19, at 1:15 p.m. ET. Agassi, an iconic tennis champion whose popularity and public image kept him in the mainstream of American sports for two decades of professional play, will be available to answer questions about his career, the state of tennis today and his revealing autobiography, Open, released by Alfred A. Knopf, a division of Random House, last week.

In addition to www.tennischannel.com, Agassi will appear on the network this evening, at 9 p.m. ET in a 30-minute interview in which he discusses, among other things, his recreational drug use during the low point of his career. He also details his longtime hatred for his sport, relationship with rival champion Pete Sampras and all-time worst moment on a tennis court. This week and next, the network’s daily Court Report news segments are focusing on Agassi as well.

“I look forward to talking directly with Tennis Channel Web visitors and answering whatever questions they have for me,” said Agassi. “It’s always fun to spend time with people who are passionate about this sport and to share in how it also impacts their lives.”

In conjunction with the launch of Agassi’s autobiography, Tennis Channel is giving away 10 copies of Open, each signed by the author. Fans can enter the free raffle on the network’s home page, with the registration period ending on Friday, Nov. 20. Tennis Channel is also re-airing its original documentary film Agassi: Between the Lines this Sunday, Nov. 15, at 1 p.m. ET. Created in the year following Agassi’s retirement, the retrospective covers the almost mythological “hero’s journey” quality to his career and life overall.

Three years after his final match as a professional tennis player Agassi remains one of the most popular, charismatic athletes in sports. His on-court achievements and ongoing media presence captured the imagination of tennis fans around the world, who followed his tremendous journey from rising young star to the world’s top player, only to tumble all the way out of the top-100 rankings and begin anew. Along the way Agassi grew from a brash, unconventional young player to the respected, elder statesman he is known as today, a revered champion who both elevated and transcended the game.

Beyond collecting eight Grand Slam singles championships, Agassi is the only player in tennis’ Open Era to have won every Grand Slam singles title, the Tennis Masters Cup, Davis Cup and Olympic Gold Medal. He is just as accomplished – if not more – in the educational foundation he established in 1994, which to date has channeled tens of millions of dollars toward transforming U.S. public education for underserved youth. In 2009, the foundation’s school, The Andre Agassi College Preparatory Academy, commenced its initial graduating class, which boasted a 100-percent graduation and college acceptance rate.

I give credit to Andre for his candor regarding his drug use and what his father did to him. Not easy to admit and I’m not in the camp condemning him. I know many people are not happy with Andre’s revelation, but it’s cathartic to him.

This Is Monday’s Linkage

by , under 30 for 30, College Basketball, Comcast, ESPN, ESPN.com, Fox Sports, FSN, Jon Gruden, LPGA, Mike North, NBC Sports, NFL, NHL, Olympics, Sunday Night Football, TSN, TV Ratings

On this day when New England sports fans are talking about the Bill Belichick decision that cost the Patriots a win against the Colts, I’m enjoying the agony. Being a Browns fan, I need something to help me endure the season. And the Indianapolis Star has a picture of one of Belichick’s henchman shoving an NBC photographer after the game. Thanks to the Big Lead for the pic.

Let’s do the links for you.

We start with the Sports Business Journal and a few stories for you.

John Ourand writes that Comcast is set to compete with ESPN at the local level.

Tripp Mickle says not as many U.S. newspapers will be staffing the Vancouver Winter Olympics in February.

Terry Lefton reports that with the Pro Bowl and the Super Bowl being held at the same venue in 2010, the NFL plans to offer some different events.

In today’s Sports Business Daily, Eric Fisher writes that ESPN.com is now featuring a new section for commentary including the ESPN Ombudsman.

To the Sporting News and Dan Levy of On The DL writes about Jon Gruden’s decision to sign a multi-year contract with ESPN.

Mike Florio from Pro Football Talk says ESPN isn’t saying much about Gruden’s staying to call Monday Night Football for next season and possibly beyond.

Writing for the Indiana University National Sports Journalism Center, Jason Fry says it’s time to blow up the current standard for the game story and invent a new one.

CNBC’s Darren Rovell says now that Michelle Wie has won a golf tournament, what’s next for her?

Noam Cohen of the New York Times says ESPN’s Bill Simmons is the future of columnists. If he is, then I find that very sad. One of these days, I’ll explain why Simmons is one of the worst things to happen to sports and is a massive charlatan.

Phil Mushnick of the New York Post loves to point at college football players who have arrest records and not properly mentioned on the networks.

Pete Dougherty of the Albany Times Union also looks at Jon Gruden’s new contract with ESPN.

Pete wonders if Sunday Night Football shouldn’t start earlier.

Alan Pergament of the Buffalo News says this means that Gruden won’t be moving to the Bills.

John Rowe of the Bergen (NJ) Record says believe it or not, one school wanted to play in the 6 a.m. ET slot in tomorrow’s 24 hour college basketball marathon on ESPN.

Jim Williams of the Washington Examiner writes about Jon Gruden’s staying with ESPN.

Jim provides the best quotage from the Sunday NFL pregame and postgame shows.

To Tom Jones of the St. Petersburg Times who reviews the weekend in televised sports and feels there are too many college football games on TV.

And Tom also has a story on Gruden’s new contract at ESPN. Apparently this is a big story today.

Barry Horn of the Dallas Morning News has the postmortem on the Cowboys’ loss to Green Bay yesterday.

Barry notes a former Dallas radio sports director who has been honored as a Minor League Baseball broadcaster of the year.

Barry also has his take on the Gruden/ESPN signing.

John Kiesewetter of the Cincinnati Enquirer says Fox Sports South in HD has been added to local cable systems.

John writes the Bengals-Steelers game set a local ratings record on Sunday for the local CBS affiliate.

Ed Sherman in Crain’s Chicago Business says noted local sports personality Mike North is doing a guest spot on one of the news/talk stations this week.

Ed looks at the economics of firing three noted coaches.

Bob Wolfley of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel says there was plenty of Rx from the TV football doctors for what ailed the Packers.

Dusty Sanders of the Denver Post says Northern Colorado takes an early role in ESPN’s 24 hour college basketball marathon on Tuesday.

Tom Hoffarth of the Los Angeles Daily News has this week’s sports calendar for SoCal.

Bruce Dowbiggin in the Toronto Globe and Mail says a TSN CFL analyst is getting the job done.

Chris Zelkovich of the Toronto Star reviews ESPN’s 30 for 30 Wayne Gretzky documentary which has its Canadian premiere on Wednesday.

William Houston in the Truth & Rumours blog looks at the NHL’s record on head shots and the media’s passive attitude towards the league’s head of discipline, Colin Campbell.

The great Amanda Bruno of Batter-up with Bruno is joining a new website called BostonSportsWoman. Best of luck on the new venture, Amanda!

Also joining the site is a Twitter friend, Kayla Chadwick of the Off The Monster blog.

My best wishes to Amanda and Kayla and I wish nothing but success for Boston Sports Woman.

The Sports Media Watch says Cowboys-Packers steered Fox to big ratings yesterday.

And SMW notes that Pats-Colts did very well for NBC last night.

Chris Byrne of the Eye on Sports Media takes us inside the production truck as he worked a women’s volleyball game yesterday. I love these features and I hope you do too.

Chris notes how one network creatively marketed its brand when it was using an outsourced production truck.

Chris lets us know the enormity of the production crew that regularly work a college football game.

And we end with The Five from WEEI.com hosted by Kristine Leahy.

That’s it for the day.

Pats-Colts Deliver Monster Ratings for NBC

by , under NBC Sports, NFL, Sunday Night Football, TV Ratings

Last night’s much-hyped Patriots-Colts game delivered NBC’s second highest ratings for Sunday Night Football. The only game higher rated than last night was the Cowboys Stadium opener back in NFL Week 2. This is the press release as it hit the Fang’s Bites inbox just minutes ago.

PATS-COLTS “RIVALRY OF THE DECADE” DELIVERS SECOND BEST “SUNDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL” OVERNIGHT RATING THIS YEAR

15.1 Rating Trails Only Giants-Cowboys, Which Was Best Overnight For Primetime NFL Game in 11 Years

SNF Powers NBC to Another Sunday Night Win and Again is Top Rated Program of Sunday Night

NEW YORK – Nov. 16, 2009 – Last night's Patriots-Colts thriller on NBC Sports had the second best overnight rating for a "Sunday Night Football" game this season and the best Week 10 overnight in SNF history. The Colts 35-34 come-from-behind victory earned a 15.1 overnight rating and 24 share to power NBC to a Sunday Night victory as SNF again was the top rated program of Sunday night as it has been for eight of nine Sundays.

The rating peaked at a 16.2/24 from 9:30-10 p.m. ET when the Patriots led 24-14 and then dipped to a 14.1/25 at the beginning of the fourth quarter (11:00 p.m. ET) when it seemed the Pats had the game in hand with a 31-14 lead. The rating then grew to a 15.5/30 from 11:30-11:45 when Peyton Manning led the Colts back to win the game 35-34.

SECOND BEST SNF OVERNIGHT RATING THIS YEAR: Last night's game (8:30-11:45 p.m. ET) was the second-highest overnight rating of the season for "Sunday Night Football" trailing only the Week 2 Giants 33-31 victory over the Cowboys in the much-hyped debut of the new Cowboys stadium. That game drew an overnight rating of a 16.5/27, which was the highest overnight rating for an NFL primetime regular-season game in 11 years.

BEST WEEK 10 RATING IN SNF HISTORY: The 15.1/24 rating is the best for a Week 10 matchup, which is in the November sweeps period, in the four-year history of "Sunday Night Football" on NBC, up 22 percent over the Week 10 game last season (Giants-Eagles, 12.4/20) up 19 percent over the Week 10 game in 2007 (Colts-Chargers, 12.7/20), and up 11 percent from the Week 10 game in 2006 (Bears-Giants, 13.6/20).

TIED FOR 4TH BEST EVER ON SNF: The 15.1/24 overnight rating is tied with the 2006 edition of the Pats-Colts "Rivalry of the Decade" for the fourth-best overnight rating in "Sunday Night Football" history.

DOMINATED PRIMETIME: "Sunday Night Football" is the No. 1 program of the night in the metered markets (excludes overruns of NFL day games) for the eighth time in nine Sundays this season on a night that included originals of ABC's Desperate Housewives and Brothers & Sisters, CBS's 60 Minutes and Amazing Race and Fox's Simpsons, Cleveland Show and Family Guy.

Head-to-head from 9-10 p.m., "Sunday Night Football" nearly doubled ABC's Desperate Housewives in the metered markets out-rating Housewives by a margin of 90% (16.0 vs. 8.4 in that hour).

NBC is No. 1 for the night in metered-market households, with the network's highest Sunday average (11.4/18 from 7-11 p.m. ET) since September 20 (Giants-Cowboys game). NBC's margin of victory was 50 percent over second place Fox (11.4 vs. 7.6).

As one would expect, Indy, Boston and Providence were the highest rated markets for the game, but there was a lot of national interest for the contest thanks to NBC’s hype.

The Amazing Race 15 – Elimination Station, Ep. 9

by , under The Amazing Race

Before the Jon Gruden post, I was going to put this up. This is the latest installment of Elimination Station. With no more teams going to Vietnam, the eliminated racers (in this case, Gary & Matt) call in while Marcy gets a swimming lesson from Garrett. While the teams try to predict who’s the next to go, only Zev & Justin get it right.

And here’s the preview for next week.

Sam & Dan steal a taxi. That’s not good. When that happens, usually the Amazing Race Gods come back and nail the team. We’ll see what happens.

BREAKING NEWS: Jon Gruden To Stay With ESPN

by , under ESPN, Jon Gruden, Monday Night Football

I was about to post something else when this press release was posted by just about every single ESPN public relations person on Twitter, whether it be Mike Soltys, Josh Krulewitz, or Bill Hofheimer. I really didn’t see this coming, but apparently not only will Jon Gruden stay with ESPN, he’s slated to call some BCS games on ESPN Radio. Check out the release.

ESPN and Jon Gruden Reach Multi-Year Extension

MNF Analyst to Add NFL Draft and Super Bowl Week Roles;
Will Call 2010 Rose Bowl and BCS Title Game on ESPN Radio with Mike Tirico

Super Bowl-winning head coach Jon Gruden, who joined ESPN in May as a Monday Night Football analyst, has agreed to an exclusive multi-year agreement with the company. Gruden has made a commitment to remain with ESPN.

In addition to his MNF role alongside play-by-play commentator Mike Tirico and analyst Ron Jaworski, Gruden will appear on ESPN’s NFL Draft and Super Bowl week coverage, among other platforms, and he will call the 2010 NFL Pro Bowl in South Florida on January 31, 2010. Gruden will serve as an analyst for ESPN Radio’s 2010 Rose Bowl and Bowl Championship Series (BCS) title game broadcasts, where he will team with Tirico, and he will be part of SportsCenter coverage leading up to the ESPN on ABC telecasts of both games.

“Working with Mike, Jaws and our entire Monday Night Football team is the most fun I have had in years, and I am fired up to make this long-term commitment to ESPN,” said Gruden. “Monday Night Football is special and I look forward to remaining a part of it and continuing to call these great games.”

Norby Williamson, executive vice president, production, added: “Jon has truly reinvented himself, from a Super Bowl-winning head coach to one of the foremost NFL analysts in the business, and the reaction has been overwhelmingly positive. We are thrilled with his commitment to ESPN, which ensures that Jon will continue on Monday Night Football with Mike and Jaws, and he will have the opportunity to do even more with ESPN.”

Gruden served as an NFL head coach for 11 seasons with the Oakland Raiders (1998-2001) and Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2002-08). He compiled a career record of 100-85 and led his teams to five division titles. Gruden’s best season was 2002 when the Buccaneers finished the regular season 12-4 and captured the Super Bowl XXXVII title with a 48-21 victory over the Raiders, the team he had coached just one season earlier. At the time, the championship made then 38-year-old Gruden the youngest head coach ever to win a Super Bowl.

Gruden began his NFL coaching career in 1990 with the San Francisco 49ers as an assistant in charge of quality control. He quickly ascended through the ranks, also serving as the Green Bay Packers wide receivers coach (1992-94) and the Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator (1995-97).

Interesting start to the week.

by , under CBS Sports, ESPN, Football Night in America, Fox NFL Sunday, Fox Sports, NBC Sports, NFL, NFL Network, NFL Today
We have our usual array of Sunday NFL Pregame quotage today. Let’s review what was said on the NFL pregame shows.

Starting with the NFL Network, here’s the quotage from NFL Gameday Morning.

News and Sound Bites From Week 10 Edition of NFL GAMEDAY MORNING

“Carson [Palmer] comes in the huddle with a swagger. He’s got that look in his eyes.” – Chad Ochocinco on Bengals QB Carson Palmer and new Bengals’ attitude

“I thought it was hard to get 300 in bowling.” – Steve Mariucci on Brett Favre making his 300th consecutive start in the NFL vs. Detroit

“Vince Young is 20-11 in his first 31 starts. Troy Aikman, a great franchise quarterback, was 10-21 in his first 31 starts. If Dallas had given up on Troy at 10-21, he wouldn’t be a Hall of Famer and wouldn’t have won those Super Bowls.” – Michael Irvin on Titans QB Vince Young and if he’s a franchise quarterback

“They’re converting on third down. They are the most efficient NFL team in the red zone when it comes to putting seven points on the board. When they get down there, we have to do a good job of making them kick field goals.” – Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin on the Cincinnati Bengals

“It’s the way that they are winning games that makes them the most dangerous team and the team to beat in the NFC. They’ve won by beating teams by 40 and they’ve won being down by 20.” – Michael Irvin on the New Orleans Saints

NFL GameDay Morning, the FIRST pregame show on the air Sunday mornings at 9:00 AM ET with a new four-hour expanded format, taking viewers straight up to kickoff. Michael Irvin, Warren Sapp, Marshall Faulk, Steve Mariucci, Jason La Canfora and hosts Spero Dedes and Stacey Dales bring fans the latest news, injury reports, pregame analysis and game previews.

‘Sunday Sit-Down’ – Michael Irvin 1-on-1 with Bengals WR Chad Ochocinco:

Michael Irvin caught up with Bengals WR Chad Ochocinco to talk about the change in his mindset from last year to now, his relationship with QB Carson Palmer and the Bengals turnaround that has them contending for the AFC North:

“Our attitude. Everybody believes we’re going to win every game. We were down 20-9 in the fourth quarter against the Steelers, with nine minutes to go, Carson [Palmer] comes in the huddle with a swagger. He’s got that look in his eyes.” – Ochocinco on the difference between Bengals this season vs. last season

“Frustrations…the finger pointing. His style of play, he talks too much, he celebrates too much. I’ve always played this way. And for my style of play to all of a sudden become a problem, it kind of got to me a little bit. But there’s one thing I always say – ‘I’ll never change.’” – Ochocinco on his 2008 season and his reaction to the criticism

Michael Lombardi Pregame 1-on-1 with Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin:

“We have to be good at playing situational football. There’s a reason why they’re playing really well. They’re converting on third down. They’re the most efficient NFL team in the red zone when it comes to putting seven points on the board. When they get down there, we have to do a good job of making them kick field goals.” – Tomlin on the Cincinnati Bengals

“We have to put our work on tape. Not anything schematic, we just have to be detailed and play with great pad level and energy.” – Tomlin on the Steelers special teams play

Quotes from NFL GameDay Morning:

“I was closed for renovations. That’s how I look at it. I messed up. I made that bed. I had to lay in it. I don’t embarrass my organization and come back and think I’m going to be productive. It’s not going to happen.” – Chad Ochocinco on his subpar 2008 season

“I’m not focused on their record, or how many Super Bowls they won. Kudos to them. I’m trying to get myself and my team down to Miami to get my own jewelry and I mean business – this isn’t a joke.” – Chad Ochocinco on facing the Steelers and their Super Bowl-winning history

“The Cowboys are back in the top echelon of teams in NFC and when you’re back in the top, you need to play like you’re in the top and put teams away when you’re supposed to.” – Michael Irvin on the Dallas Cowboys

“The Eagles defense is what fuels their ball club right now.” – Warren Sapp on the Philadelphia Eagles

“Vincent Jackson is the next premiere wide receiver in the National Football League.” – Steve Mariucci on Chargers WR Vincent Jackson

“Troy Polamalu makes them the very best defense in all of football.” – Steve Mariucci on S Troy Polamalu and the Pittsburgh Steelers

“He has a chance of losing the team with the type of play he’s putting out right now.” – Marshall Faulk on Bears QB Jay Cutler

“There are too many guys working too hard on the field to stick with one guy when he’s not playing well…In the first game, he threw four interceptions, and after four he didn’t do anything miraculous. I don’t expect him to do it after five.” – Michael Irvin on Bears QB Jay Cutler not being pulled in 10-6 loss to the 49ers where he threw five interceptions

“Body language is 90% of what you’re really thinking.” – Warren Sapp on Bears QB Jay Cutler and his mannerisms on the sideline and during press conferences

“I had to suspend Terrell Owens one week, and then, all of a sudden, for the next three years we just butted heads.” – Steve Mariucci on the Dolphins deactivation of LB Joey Porter for Week 10 game vs. Tampa Bay

“With their big play ability, they don’t need equal balance in this offense, but they need effective balance.” – Paul Burmeister on the Cowboys’ offense

“We’re going to know who this offensive line is for the Bengals after the game.” – Marshall Faulk on the Bengals offensive line facing the Steelers defensive front

“When you have the Defensive Player of the Year, you have to put him in position to make plays and that’s what Dick LeBeau does.” – Warren Sapp on Steelers LB James Harrison and his role in the Steelers defense as defined by defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau

“When you have the second-ranked defense [in the NFL], you’re never really out of a game.” – Steve Mariucci on the New York Jets

“It’s the way that they are winning games that makes them the most dangerous team and the team to beat in the NFC. They’ve won by beating teams by 40 and they’ve won being down by 20. When a team thinks they can win in any situation, they’re a tough team to beat.” – Michael Irvin on the New Orleans Saints

“I thought it was hard to get 300 in bowling.” – Steve Mariucci on Brett Favre making his 300th consecutive start in the NFL vs. Detroit

‘Super Bowl Journey,’ Week 10 Edition – Jets WR Kerry Rhodes Takes His Mind of Football to Focus

“You have to have a short memory. From week to week you can be touted as one of the best, then go out and lay an egg. You have to be patient, move on and not dwell on what happens.” – Kerry Rhodes on handling the ups and downs of the season

“We have a lot of season left where we can right the ship.” – Rhodes on the New York Jets

La Canfora News Reports:

  • The Dolphins are being pretty tight-lipped about the deactivation of LB Joey Porter. They’re not confirming anything you run by them and they’re not denying anything you run by them. All the Dolphins are saying is that it’s not related to an injury and that it was a coach’s decision. The word circling around the locker room is that maybe it has something to do with the fact that he was banged up this week, allowed to go home early on one occasion and may have wandered out and about and did not go straight home. The inkling is that the coaching staff found out and it did not sit well with them.
  • When you talk about Mike Holmgren, you continue to hear Seattle. Not as a coach with Jim Mora in his first year, but in a team president or GM-type of a role if they make a move. Mike Shanahan wants to get back into coaching as well and he would love to go to San Diego. They have a pretty good operation there with a good quarterback in place. However, you’re hearing more and more that if Chicago makes a move and Lovie Smith goes, we know about Shanahan’s relationship with Jay Cutler and look at the money – Shanahan’s going to get $7 million a year from Denver no matter what. That’s a pretty big offset of what Chicago would have to pay him. Also Bill Cowher; he’s another guy that if Chicago made a move, he would go. Houston and Carolina are other options for Cowher as well. Jon Gruden and Bruce Allen could reunite in Washington, maybe even with Doug Williams where I’m hearing there’s little tension growing in Tampa.

2009 “Sunday NFL Countdown” Notes and Quotes – Week 10

ESPN’s Sunday NFL Countdown host Chris Berman and analysts Cris Carter, Mike Ditka, Tom Jackson and Keyshawn Johnson previewed today’s of NFL action. Highlights:

Who has the more impressive season so far: Tom Brady or Peyton Manning?

Jackson: “It is Peyton Manning because he has been so much a part of what they’ve done offensively. Having possession against Miami, less than 15 minutes, win that football game. Forty passes last week to open up the game in the first half. They win that football game. I saw New England last year without Tom Brady, and they went 11 and five. I’m trying to imagine the Colts without Peyton Manning, no slight to (Jim) Sorgi, with Jim Sorgi be 11 and five.”

Johnson: “I think it is Peyton Manning. When you look at everything over the course of the year – he looses (head coach) Tony Dungy, which is a big change no matter what anybody is says; then you don’t know whether the offensive coordinator is coming or going; and also, he looses the Hall of Fame wide receiver Marvin Harrison, hasn’t played all year long except one game with (Anthony) Gonzalez who got hurt, and then Pierre Garcon stepped up to the plate, that’s a lot there to deal with.”

Carter: “There’s one guy that got carried off the field last year and that’s Tom Brady … When you can jump over that mental, injury hurdle, I give the edge to Tom because of what he had to go through.”

Ditka: “I’d say Peyton (Manning). You must understand what this guy is doing – he’s the coach on the field, he’s the coordinator, he’s running the offense, he’s calling every play, he has the check-with-me list, they come up, they run it, reads the defense, he recognizes it, understands it, they go.”

The Patriots – Colts rivalry

Jackson on what makes the rivalry great: “First, I’ve got to have two teams that win. And then, I’ve got to have high stakes whenever they meet. I think we have that every time these two teams play. Great organizations. Throw in a couple Hall of Fame quarterbacks and a couple Hall of Fame coaches – Bill Belichick and when Tony Dungy was there, Tony Dungy. You’ve got all of those things going when the Colts and the Pats match up.”

Colts – Pats – Matchups to watch tonight

Jackson – Sebastian Vollmer vs. Dwight Freeney: “I am going to be watching Dwight Freeney. I’m going to see if he can get the pressure on Tom Brady to force him to do something other than complete about 80% of his passes downfield.”

Carter – Bill Belichick vs. Jim Caldwell: “I am going to go with the coaches – Belichick vs. Caldwell. We know what Tony Dungy in this matchup would look like. Bill Belichick in these types of games, he has no respect for Indy’s defense. So that’s why you’ve seen him 12 times since 2000 on fourth down, they’ve gone for it and have gotten eight of them. Now it is time to establish what type of coach Caldwell be in a championship caliber game.”

Johnson – Randy Moss vs. Colts defensive backs: “I’m going to watch the Indianapolis secondary – young corners (Jerraud) Powers and (Jacob) Lacey … Those young guys against Randy Moss, they’ve never seen a guy run like that, indoors in a dome.”

Ditka – Peyton Manning vs. Patriots defensive backs: “The coaching staff, they look at the films. When they see the films, they look at the secondary of the New England Patriots and they say, ‘this is one area we can exploit. We can beat them in this area. Protect our quarterback, let’s get the ball down the field.’”

Berman – Kevin Faulk vs. Colts linebackers: “All these starters and all the names … who knows better than, because he’s been in all these games, Kevin Faulk against the Colts linebackers. He caught the winning touchdown in that big battle of undefeated two years ago.”

Can the Bengals handle this moment – vs. Pittsburgh?

Jackson: “It is going to be tough but they’ve got the right formula. No. 1: They have got to run the football. That’s offensively. Troy Polamalu has got that right – if they stop Cedric Benson, Pittsburgh Steelers win. No. 2: The defense of the Bengals has to knock the quarterback down – get Big Ben off his feet. That’s going to be hard to do. And then comes the mentality of beating the defending world champions in order to get where you want to get and you’ve got to do it twice in the season. We had to do it against the Raiders. We beat them 37-7 at home in Oakland the first year we went to the Super Bowl. That’s the task in front of the Bengals.”

Carter: “A lot of people just assume that professional athletes, that we all have a great deal of confidence … We were in that same situation in 1998 in Minnesota. We had Green bay, who had represented the NFC the last two previous years in the Super Bowl, and we thumped them good on a Monday night – Randy Moss’ national coming out party. But it gave us the confidence inside that locker room that we can represent the NFC. It gave us a little extra. There’s more to this game than Xs and Os.”

Johnson: “I hate to be the guy that spoils the party for the Cincinnati Bengals. But I don’t think they can seize this moment. It is going to be a little big for them. When you look back, they’ve already beaten the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 3. Now, the Pittsburgh Steelers are a much, much better football team. Not to take anything away from the Cincinnati Bengals because they are playing pretty good themselves. But Troy Polamalu, back in the lineup, he wasn’t there with the touchdown at the end of the game. That wasn’t him in the middle of the field. Rashard Mendenhall, found his way on the bench. He’s no longer on the bench, running the ball well. And James Harrison is getting after the quarterbacks. Eight sacks this year. He’s playing lights out. Pittsburgh Steelers understand that ‘we are trying to get back to the Super Bowl.’ In order to do that, we have to take care of business at home.”

Ditka:
“Everything leading up to this football game started in the offseason – To get to the next level, you’ve got to beat the teams in there. Every goal that Cincinnati set was to beat Pittsburgh. That’s what they said. Now, they’ve done it once. They’ve got to figure out how to do it again. How are they going to beat them? Well, ‘we’re going to play your style of football … We’re going to run the football, we’re going to play good defense, and don’t turn it over.’”

More surprising: Cowboys rise or Packers slide?

Ditka: “Green Bay struggling. I picked them to go to the Super Bowl … Somewhere, the coaches have to enter into this. I’m just saying, ‘I’ve got a problem. I’ve got to correct the problem. Right now, we’re getting sacked way too much, what am I going to do? I’ve got to protect that back side, I don’t have a left tackle. I’ll protect the backside, here’s the tight end.’ Roll him out. Put in a little packet. Roll plays to the right. Get him out of the pocket. And the other thing is, he’s got to get rid of the football.”

Jackson: “I knew that Dallas had the talent. They just needed the focus. Aaron Rodgers was an outstanding quarterback at the beginning of last year. Through taking that punishment, I see the shell and the shock of what’s happening to him. He’s starting to become frozen with the football and he’s on pace to get sacked 74 times this year. I can tell you this, this is football knowledge from whenever, if he gets sacked 74 times, you’ll never see the same guy that you saw start the season last year.”

Johnson: “You’ve got Aaron Rodgers now as a young quarterback that you drafted and playing, but you’ve got to protect him. You need to be able to do things to protect him. Shift the back over to help … You also have to get the football out of his hands early. They got rid of a 40-year-old quarterback fellows, if this keeps up, he’ll be 40 before long.”

Carter: “I’m not surprised about Dallas. But I’m really surprised about Green Bay. I’m really surprised how they missed in trying to install a 34 defense. Dom Capers, well respected around the National Football League. But when you don’t have a dude who plays that 34, that linebacker who can rush, just like Denver has with (Elvis) Dumervil, like (James) Harrison in Pittsburgh, you don’t have that in Aaron Kampman, he’s too tall … They made a serious miscalculation in that 34 defense.”

Now to Fox NFL Sunday back from Afghanistan.

Bradshaw on Jay Cutler: He’s the Disappointment of the Year

Strahan: Saints Defense Has More Touchdowns than Rams Offense

Long: Jim Caldwell Has to be Considered for Coach of the Year

Johnson: Rivers Should Have a Big Day Against Philadelphia

Glazer Reports NFLPA to Meet with Browns Players about Mangini’s Behavior

————————————————————————————————

Co-host Terry Bradshaw, analysts Jimmy Johnson & Michael Strahan assess Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler’s performance this season:

Bradshaw: “He’s the disappointment of the year but I wouldn’t call him a bust. When I had bad games in Pittsburgh, it wasn’t uncommon for Joe Greene or Jack Lambert to get in my face. Did I resent it? No. It actually helped me focus and realize it’s all about the team.”

Johnson: “It’s all about attitude. Jay Cutler has thrown seven red zone interceptions in his last 11 games. Tom Brady has six red zone interceptions in his entire career. Now, we shouldn’t be comparing Cutler to Brady. We should be comparing Jay Cutler to Rex Grossman.”

Strahan: “The disappointing thing is that they brought him in to win the type of game that they ended up losing against the 49ers. Very rarely, when you already have four interceptions, do you have the chance to win the game and he threw a pick to end it. GM Jerry Angelo, who took all the credit for bringing Cutler in, needs to take some of the criticism now that Cutler’s not playing as well.”

————————————————————————————————

Analyst Howie Long thinks highly of the job done by Indianapolis Colts Head Coach Jim Caldwell: “Jim Caldwell has a new defensive coordinator, an entirely new scheme, a slew of injured defensive players and has been forced to play a couple of rookies on offense. When you talk about coach of the year here at the midway point, he has to get consideration.”

————————————————————————————————

Co-host Terry Bradshaw predicts a win by the Steelers this afternoon in Pittsburgh: “Some things are certain in life and that is Cincinnati is not going to beat Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh. There is no way the Bengals will beat Pittsburgh.”

————————————————————————————————

FOX NFL SUNDAY Insider Jay Glazer reports the NFLPA will meet with Browns players about the behavior of head coach Eric Mangini: “Things in Cleveland look bad and it just keeps getting worse and worse. In fact unbeknownst to Eric Mangini, I’ve learned that the NFLPA is actually going out to Cleveland on Wednesday to have a meeting with the players. The NFLPA wants to get to the bottom of exactly what Eric Mangini is doing with these guys. Not sure what they can really do but they’re going out to see if there is anyway they can protect them.”

Glazer on what Browns players are saying: “They are absolutely exhausted. It’s not just Jamal Lewis (who last week went public with negative comments on Mangini’s practice methods). It’s funny, Eric Mangini said this week, ‘I just practice these guys for two hours.’ The players I talked to said, ‘two hours? What practices is he talking about?’ He’s giving these guys three hours. Sometimes, like this past week, one guy said practice was for three hours and 25 minutes in full pads, they were completely exhausted. A big problem is that they’re so exhausted that after practice Mangini has these extra reps and that’s when guys are really getting hurt. In fact one guy shredded his patella this week. They think it’s career ending.”

————————————————————————————————

Analyst Howie Long believes the Vikings should rest Favre, if they get the opportunity: “Don’t worry about the message you’re sending to your team. The Vikings have three home games coming up. If you get a chance, you rest Favre. You don’t treat all your players the same. Brett is different.”

Analyst Jimmy Johnson on how he would handle Favre: “Play him. Run the football, play defense and let him do his thing.”

————————————————————————————————

Strahan compares the Saints defense, to the Rams offense: “Defensive coordinator Gregg Williams has done a great job in New Orleans. The Saints defense has actually scored more touchdowns than the Rams offense.”

————————————————————————————————

Analyst Jimmy Johnson on Philadelphia’s struggles when traveling to the West Coast: “The last time that Philadelphia had to come to the West Coast they lost to Oakland. Now they are traveling to San Diego who blitzes as much as anyone in the league. I think it’s a big day for Phillip Rivers against Philadelphia.”

————————————————————————————————

NFL Insider Jay Glazer reports on Packers players-only meeting: “Aaron Rodgers stood up in an offensive, players-only meeting and he got after everybody. It was followed by every body getting on each other and guys saying ‘this is what I’m doing wrong; this is what this guy is doing wrong.’ It wasn’t a confrontational thing where guys were pointing fingers but more of a productive thing. It spilled over into the locker room where the defensive guys got involved also. Last night Coach McCarthy told me, ‘We’re going to be aggressive about fixing this.’ In fact they’ve changed an awful lot of blocking schemes up front for this game and have put even more in the lap of Aaron Rodgers.”

————————————————————————————————

Analyst Howie Long’s Midseason Awards:

Biggest Disappointment: Tennessee Titans

Sideline Enforcer: Mike Smith

NEWS, NOTES & QUOTES FROM CBS SPORTS’ “THE NFL TODAY” WITH JAMES BROWN, DAN MARINO, SHANNON SHARPE, BILL COWHER AND BOOMER ESIASON FOR WEEK 10 ON NOVEMBER 15

?“SEC ON CBS’” RATINGS

CBS Sports’ doubleheader coverage of the SEC ON CBS on Saturday, Nov. 14, which saw No. 1 Florida defeat South Carolina, 24-14, earned an overnight household rating/share of 4.7/10, up 27% from last year’s 3.7/8 (No. 24 South Carolina vs. No. 3 Florida). And CBS Sports’ first game, which saw Ole Miss beat Tennessee, 42-17, earned an overnight HH rating/share of 2.4/6, up 9% from last year’s 2.2/5 (Notre Dame vs. Navy).

?QUICK HITS

(On Cincinnati’s Chad Ochocinco getting fined $20,000 for stunt where he pretended to bribe an official)

SHANNON SHARPE: I think the NFL should fine Chad Ochocinco $250,000…Because even though this was a stunt, maybe he didn’t mean it. But when you try to influence or you bring into question the integrity of the National Football League, someone just watching this for the first time, or someone that’s really not an avid fan, might say, ‘Can they really do this?’ And you also fine him $250,000 because clearly when you fine Chad $5,000, $10,000, $15,000, $20,000, he’s not getting the message. So you fine him $250,000 – he gets the message now and anybody who comes along after Chad and thinks about doing something like this, they better think long and hard because $250,000 is a lot of money. A one dollar bribe is the same as a $20,000 fine to him. It’s nothing. Two-hundred Thousand dollars sends the message. Chad will stop these shenanigans. He’s getting ridiculous with it.

? POLITICAL FOCUS GROUP GURU FRANK LUNTZ VISITED “THE NFL TODAY” SET

Expert in communication and pioneer of the “Instant Response” focus group, Frank Luntz, visited THE NFL TODAY studio to rate sound bites of several coaches and players. Based on his expertise Luntz surmised:

(On San Francisco Head Coach Mike Singletary being a good candidate for political office)

LUNTZ: He’s candid. He’s honest. He’s acknowledging weaknesses. But then he says, ‘We’re going to go to work.’ It’s as simple as that. No messing around. This could be his gubernatorial announcement speech. It’s that good.

(On describing Cleveland Head Coach Eric Mangini with “communication by thesaurus” for his one word descriptions of what his team needs)

LUNTZ: He only needs three things: a noun, a verb and some sort of punctuation. I really got the feeling like maybe he learned English as a second language. It was plain and simple and you got it. But he could still be better. He could still be more expressive. He’s not trying to speak to the team in these moments. He’s trying to speak to the fans, to the greater audience. And all I would recommend is add a little more humanity to it – not just the words – a little more of the heart.

?“INSIDE THE GAME” WITH CHARLEY CASSERLY

(On Chicago Head Coach Lovie Smith’s future)

CASSERLY: I spoke to the Bears on Friday, and they told me two things: Number one, ‘We’re solidly behind our coach, Lovie Smith, and we’re 100% committed to him.’ In other words, he’s going to be the head coach next year.

(On Arizona’s Anquan Boldin returning next season)

CASSERLY: First of all, next year is the last year of his contract. I don’t see him getting a contract extension. Last spring they tried to find out what his trade value was. They didn’t get offered a lot for him. I think this year they aggressively try to trade him. What’s he worth? I don’t think he’s a number one receiver. I do think he’s a good football player. I wouldn’t give up a one for him. Nobody offered a one last year, so I doubt they will get that number one offer this year.

When NBC’s Football Night in America becomes available, it’ll be posted here.

UPDATE, 10:50 p.m.: We now have the Football Night in America quotage.

“FOOTBALL NIGHT IN AMERICA” NOTES & QUOTES; WEEK 10

Manning to Costas: “I like being in the old club with guys who just played their butts off.”

Dungy & Harrison break down “Illinois Z Delay”

Andrea Kremer Asks Hall of Fame QBs: Brady or Manning?

NEW YORK – November 15, 2009 – Following are highlights from NBC Sports' "Football Night in America." Bob Costas hosted the show live from Lucas Oil Stadium. He was joined on site for commentary by Al Michaels and Cris Collinsworth. Co-hosts Dan Patrick and Keith Olbermann, analysts Tony Dungy and Rodney Harrison, and reporter Peter King were live from NBC's 30 Rockefeller Plaza studios, covering the news of the NFL's tenth week. Tiki Barber reported from Lambeau Field, site of the Cowboys-Packers game.

LIVING HALL OF FAME QBs CHOOSE MANNING OVER BRADY
Prior to the game, "Sunday Night Football" sideline reporter Andrea Kremer asked the 20 living Hall of Fame QBs, including 97-year old Ace Parker, who is better, Patriots QB Tom Brady or Indianapolis QB Peyton Manning? The results were 13.5 votes for Manning, 2.5 for Brady and four abstentions. Joe Montana was responsible for the half votes saying he would start Brady in the first half and Manning in the second. A comprehensive story can be found on NBCSports.com.

ILLINOIS Z DELAY
Harrison broke down a Colts play the Patriots named "Illinois Z Delay," which he described as the most frustrating play to cover when he competed against the Colts as a member of the Patriots.

Harrison: "It was a zone beater. As a defender, you have two men in your zone. I can't cover both. I have to decide who I'm going to cover. You knew it was coming but you had no way of stopping it."

Dungy: "It's a quick pass, an easy read for the quarterback against zone coverage. They'll throw this seven, eight, maybe 10 times tonight if they're playing a lot of zone."

Harrison: "Really the only way of covering it is to go to man-to-man coverage but that plays into Indianapolis' hands."

NOTE: Dungy would not reveal the actual name the Colts use for the play.

COSTAS INTERVIEWS MANNING: "Football Night" host Bob Costas interviewed Colts QB Peyton Manning prior to the game.

Manning on Tom Brady: "I can't tell you where he ranks. I can tell you what a great quarterback he is or what a great leader he is. Certainly, when the stakes are at their highest that's when he seems to shine and make the most plays. At the end of the AFC Championship a few years ago, I don't usually pray during a game but I just knew I gave Brady a 1:23. That's just way too much time...He's made the hard look easy. He's one of the best."

Manning on great quarterbacks who have not won a Super Bowl: "I still defend Marino. I still defend Tarkenton. I still defend Jim Kelly. All I know is what great quarterbacks they were. I've seen guys change when they've won one. They kind of say, 'I'm out of that club now I'm in this new club.' I kind of like being in the old club with guys who just played their butts off every single Sunday. Jim Kelly, Marino, Tarkenton, John Stockton, you get guys not just in the NFL. I admire those guys for how long they played, how well they competed, how hard they competed. That's really all I want to do every single Sunday -- win as many games as I can and certainly, every year, try to win another championship."

ON THE BENGALS
Collinsworth: "(Today's game) was one of those old fashioned, physical kind of battles that the Bengals always seem to find a way to lose to Pittsburgh. Today, in Pittsburgh, they won a big one...It's hard to believe but right now you have to start thinking about the Bengals possibilities of going to the Super Bowl."

Dungy: "I'm more excited about their defense. Those guys won the game for them today. They out-defensed Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh."

ON THE JETS
Olbermann: "All you need to know about the 2009 Jets is that after six weeks of not being able to score when they needed to, today they were unable to let the other team score when they needed them to."

Harrison: "It's inexcusable to have two veteran safeties miscommunicate with two weeks to prepare."

ON VINCE YOUNG WINNING THREE STRAIGHT GAMES & CHRIS JOHNSON
Dungy: "What if they had played him six weeks ago?...He's opened it up for Chris Johnson."

Harrison: "Chris Johnson is the best running back in football."

Dungy: "He's more exciting. He has a chance to go 90 yards every time he touches the ball. I still like Adrian Peterson."

ON THE BROWNS
King: "I think that fairly soon the Cleveland Browns are probably going to make an offer to Mike Holmgren to be that football czar."

ON BRETT FAVRE
Olbermann: "Brett Favre's 300th consecutive start dating back to 1894."

ON THE CURSE OF THE COACH'S CLICKER
Patrick: "Every time you break down a quarterback to tell us how great they are, the second coming of Peyton Manning, Matt Ryan once again lays an egg."

Dungy: "We had Matt Ryan on, he was playing great football, looked very polished, poised like a veteran. Now he's throwing interceptions left and right, making bad decisions, a 50-percent passer. He's gone down hill since we clicked him."

Harrison: "He did the same thing to Eli Manning!"

Dungy (joking): "Can I click Brady tonight?"

And that will do it for the quotage tonight.

Sunday Linkage

by , under ABC, Bob Costas, CBC, CBS Sports, College Football, College Gameday, ESPN, Fox Sports, NASCAR, NBA TV, NFL, NFL Network, Olympics, Steve Phillips, Time Warner Cable, TV Ratings, Vin Scully

We’re back after not being able to turn on the computer all day on Saturday. Right when I was about to blog yesterday, got a phone call from the parents asking me to accompany them to Massachusetts and it ended up being a total waste of time. Then it ended up that I was at the home office for the day and then I met up with friends last night so I never had a chance to provide links. I just hate when my day is planned for me without my knowledge. One of these days, I’ll have a weekend to myself.

Anyway, let’s do the links.

Chris Ballard of Sports Illustrated has an appreciation of Bill Walton upon his recent retirement from broadcasting.

T.S. Chamberland of the Lewiston (ME) Sun-Journal profiles the hosts of a weekend sports talk show and the editors of a Maine-centric (CMSB) sports blog.

Terri Schlichenmeyer reviews CBS’ James Brown’s new book for the Lawrence (MA) Eagle-Tribune.

Bob Raissman of the New York Daily News feels Steve Phillips will have a hard time in finding another TV analyst position.

Today, Phil Mushnick of the New York Post extends his hate to the NFL Network.

In a quick hits column, Phil says he hates MMA and poker. Anything else, Phil? Maybe Phil should find another line of work that doesn’t cause him to hate everything.

Pete Dougherty of the Albany Times Union noticed that two sports programs were running simultaneously on one station. That’s what happens when you have automation on weekends and you don’t have anyone manning the station.

Pete also has your college football TV schedule for this week.

Alan Pergament of the Buffalo News writes that NFL Network and Time Warner are no closer to an agreement today than last month.

Jim Williams of the Washington Examiner writes that NASCAR will be the sole focus of ABC this afternoon.

Jim talks with NBA TV’s David Aldridge.

Tim Lemke of the Washington Times notes that Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic and theDC NFL team are hooking up to provide content online.

Austin Meek of the Topeka (KS) Capital-Journal says ESPN will carry the game to decide the Big 12′s North Division this Saturday.

Dirk Facer from the Deseret (UT) News writes that ESPN’s College Gameday is paying the Mountain West Conference some respect this season.

Anthony Cimino of the Tucscon Citizen says ESPN’s College Gameday visits Arizona for the first time ever on Saturday.

Over to Tom Hoffarth of the Los Angeles Daily News who writes about an exhibit involving two of the greatest sports photographers of their generation.

Tom looks back at the last week in sports media.

Artie Gigantino of the San Francisco Examiner gives props to the networks for their tributes to the troops last week.

Chris Zelkovich of the Toronto Star says CBC’s Mike Milbury went too far in his comments two Saturdays ago.

Daphne Bramham of the Vancouver Sun writes about Battle of the Blades being a big ratings success for CBC.

Alex Weprin of Broadcasting & Cable talks with MLB Network’s/NBC’s Bob Costas about a myriad of topics including the Olympics, Comcast impending purchase of NBC and MMA (?).

John Eggerton of B & C says a local Cleveland TV station ensured that Monday Night’s game against Baltimore won’t be blacked out.

Anthony Crupi of Mediaweek writes that NBC still has a lot ad inventory to sell for the 2010 Winter Olympics with less than 90 days to go.

Peter King of CBS Radio News (not the one from Sports Illustrated) writes an appreciation of Vin Scully for Radio World.

Some NFL ratings news from the Sports Media Watch.

SMW says Fox saw a big ratings spike for its regional coverage in Week 9.

The ratings went the other way for CBS’ doubleheader.

The SMW notes that NFL Network got off to a good start with its Thursday Night Football opener.

SMW looks at the NFL’s ratings through the first 9 weeks of the season.

SMW notes that ABC’s ratings for primetime college football last week were lackluster.

And SMW has its usual weekend ratings predictions.

Joe Favorito notes that two Northern California sports franchises are doing positive things to expand their brands.

The Big Lead is getting more pictures of Jim Nantz’s 29 year old girlfriend.

And we’re done for the day. The Sunday NFL pregame quotage will come later today.

Basketball Press Releases

by , under College Basketball, ESPN, NBA, TNT

A couple of basketball-related press releases here for you.

First, TNT has quotage from its Thursday NBA doubleheader.

Notes from TNT’s Coverage of the NBA – Thursday, November 12, 2009

TNT’s NBA Thursday coverage continues Thursday, November 19 at 8 p.m. ET with a doubleheader featuring the Phoenix Suns @ New Orleans Hornets followed by the Chicago Bulls @ Los Angeles Lakers.

CLIP OF THE DAY

(click on link below to watch)

In a post-game interview with TNT’s Craig Sager, LeBron James discusses changing his uniform number from 23 to 6 next year out of respect for Michael Jordan.

**** **** **** ****

TNT NBA Tip-off

Ernie Johnson, Charles Barkley and Kenny Smith

Barkley on the firing of New Orleans Hornets’ coach Byron Scott: “(The Hornets) screwed Byron Scott, the same thing as in New Jersey a few years ago when he got them to the NBA Finals twice with a mediocre team. New Orleans is not a good team. They have basically quit since the Tyson Chandler fiasco when he was traded and then came right back. They have never been the same. It’s not Byron Scott’s fault. Trading Tyson Chandler for Emeka Okafor, that’s pretty much a wash. New Orleans is not a good team and (Jeff) Bower is covering his behind by taking over.”

Smith on the Hornets overachieving in previous seasons: “The one thing that team was is an overachiever. Then when you are not an overachiever anymore and you have expectations of Grade A, but it’s not a Grade A team…they’re overachievers and we said that when they were in the playoffs two years ago. We said this team is overachieving.”

Barkley on being grateful that Cavaliers forward LeBron James has stopped talking about his impending free agency: “LeBron (James) should never be talking about being a free agent. It’s disrespectful to the city of Cleveland, the mistake on the lake…man, what happened to the Browns? Brian Sipe is rolling over in his grave. I love LeBron, he’s a stud, but I’m finally glad he finally said that (he won’t talk about his free agency). He and Dwyane (Wade) are not going to play together, but I’m glad he finally said that. I was sick of hearing it.”

Smith on why Cavaliers forward LeBron James should have put a stop to free agency questions before he played in Madison Square Garden: “LeBron (James) said (he will stop talking about free agency) after he visited Madison Square Garden; if he had said it before – he doesn’t go back to Madison Square Garden again – it might have had a little more validity. When he goes to Denver or he goes to San Antonio no one is going to care to ask him about it.”

Barkley on former baseball slugger Sammy Sosa’s ‘skin rejuvenation’ that caused his skin to appear white: “Sammy Sosa: I know you want to get in the Hall of Fame, but going white ain’t the way to go.”

**** **** **** ****

Game 1: Cleveland Cavaliers (111) @ Miami Heat (104)

Announcers: Marv Albert, Mike Fratello and Reggie Miller with Craig Sager reporting

Miller on Heat guard Dwyane Wade driving to the basket against Cleveland’s big men: “That’s about the third time Dwyane Wade had gone straight at Shaquille O’Neal. He does not care who is going to be the teeth of that defense, he’s going to attack if it’s (Anderson) Varejao, (Zydrunas) Ilgauskas and especially if it’s Shaquille O’Neal.”

Fratello on Heat guard Dwyane Wade dunking on Cavaliers forward Anderson Varejao: “Yesterday they had the announcement here that Dwyane Wade signed on with the Jordan Brand of Nike. He was with Nike, but he now he is with Jordan Brand which is a branch of Nike. Perhaps a little inspiration with Michael (Jordan) sitting in the stands and watching the game with Pat Riley.”

Miller: “How many times did you see Michael Jordan give facials to Patrick Ewing, Alonzo Mourning, Rik Smits, Reggie Miller? And tonight wearing the Air Apparent’s shoes…wow.”

TNT’s Craig Sager interviewed Cavaliers coach Mike Brown after the first quarter.

Brown on the high-flying offense between te two teams in the first quarter: “That’s pretty and it makes for great TV, but someone’s got to defend here. The first team that does that is going to have a chance to win. 35 or 33 points (in a quarter), that’s too many points.”

Brown on the importance of having a low-post game: “We’re evolving tonight. It’s good to have the big fella (in Shaq) down there, to be able to go him early and establish a low-post game, but as the game goes along we’ve got to do the job on the other end and start getting stops. Trading baskets is not a good thing on the road.”

Miller on every team needing to retire Bulls great Michael Jordan’s #23 jersey: “(Michael Jordan) drew in so much revenue when the Bulls and Scottie (Pippen) and Dennis Rodman came to town. We were averaging five, six thousand people but when the Bulls came to town, they were the Beatles, they were the Rolling Stones. Larry Bird and Magic Johnson really put the league on the map, that rivalry between the Lakers and the Celtics. But Michael Jordan and his greatness took it to another level. He is an icon like Babe Ruth. I love Magic; Magic is one of my mentors. But Michael Jordan is an icon, a symbol. That’s why I think every team should think about possibly retiring his number.”

Miller on Heat guard Dwyane Wade having no issue with talking about his impending free agency: “Dwyane Wade is open to all the people asking him where he may end up. LeBron James, it’s just getting on his nerves because he is the most coveted of all the guys. Dwyane Wade is open to the idea of having another star here in South Beach or potentially going to Chicago or New York.”

Miller on Cavaliers forward J.J. Hickson’s soft foul on Heat guard Dwyane Wade that led to an ‘and one’ for Wade: “If you’re J.J. Hickson, wrap him up, don’t give him a hug while he’s going to the basket.”

Fratello: “If you could see LeBron at the other end of the floor as that foul takes place…he looks at Hickson, grabs his head. (Now James) is talking to him right now, saying, ‘don’t foul him that way with a soft tap. Wrap him up and don’t let him get the layup.’”

Miller: “It’s a little layup that like that can get a shooter and a scorer going. Sometimes you need that lay-up and the ‘and one’ to get going.”

TNT’s Craig Sager interviewed Cavaliers forward LeBron James at half time.

James on Heat guard Dwyane Wade’s dunk on Cavaliers’ Anderson Varejao: “It was an amazing play by D-Wade of course, we all know that. All the fans watching the game know it was an amazing play. They probably replayed it three or four times and in slow motion and everything. But to be here on the road and have a five point lead in this house, in this building, is good.”

**** **** **** ****

Halftime

Johnson, Barkley and Smith

Barkley on great players being extremely competitive against other great players: “When you are a great player and you play against another great player, it becomes an ego game. You want to do something, especially at home. Everyone wants to see LeBron play well, but if you’re Dwyane Wade you’re like, ‘I’m not going to let you outplay me.’ Anytime I played against a Kevin McHale, a Larry Bird, (Michael) Jordan, (Karl) Malone, Gary Payton and those guys, I wanted to let them know I was the best player on the court that night. Even though in my opinion Michael Jordan is the only player I ever played against who was better than me, I wanted to let people know this is my house. It’s personal.”

Smith on the Heat and Cavaliers needing to double team each other’s best player; Dwyane Wade and LeBron James, respectively: “In a pick and roll situation why would you not double them to get the ball out of the best two players hands? Neither team has doubled either player which allows great players to be great. I’m going to make marginal players have to be great. I’m not going to let a great player show me he’s great. You’re going to have to get the ball out of his hands every single time.”

**** **** **** ****

Miami Heat guard Dwyane Wade on playing against Cavaliers forward LeBron James: “We play a lot of games throughout the NBA season, but every game against LeBron is special because I know what he’s going to bring during the game, the competitive nature he’s going to bring and excitement throughout the game. It just makes it one of those fun games you want to play in so I look forward to it every year and I look forward to a good outcome.”

Miller on adjusting your focus to play a game against another great player: “I remember when No. 23 (Michael Jordan) would come in the building, you turn off your phone, (ignore) your friends who come by and ask you for tickets. Dwyane (Wade) is right, there are a lot of games in the NBA, but there are only certain games that take on a playoff feel. When Chicago and Michael Jordan came, if you weren’t mentally prepared he was going to embarrass you and you do not want to get embarrassed.”

**** **** **** ****

Game 2: Phoenix Suns (102) @ L.A. Lakers (121)

Announcers: Kevin Harlan and Doug Collins with Cheryl Miller reporting

Collins on the Phoenix Suns players having a deep bond: “This is a team that feels very good about themselves, there’re very much connected, they’ve bonded and they enjoy playing with each other. You can see that there is a real trust with this team. There are going to be some bumps in road during the season, it’s not always going to be smooth and that’s when the camaraderie has to hold you together, during those periods of time.”

Collins on the leadership of Lakers guard Derek Fisher: “I remember when (Derek Fisher) was coming out of Arkansas-Little Rock, I was coaching Detroit at the time and I wanted to draft him. We worked him out and loved him. Jerry West took him the pick before me here in Los Angeles. Needless to say he has become a real champion here. He is one of the great leaders in the NBA. When you think about all the changes the Lakers have made, they got Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum developed. But to bring Fisher back here and be with Kobe and Phil Jackson and know what it is to win championships …that was such an important deal. You’d better thank the Utah Jazz for them loving and respecting Fisher’s family to be here.”

TNT’s Cheryl Miller interviewed Lakers center Andrew Bynum at halftime.

Bynum on how the Lakers slowed down the Suns: “We’ve made them sit down and play defense. We’ve got to keep them playing against us on the defensive end as long as we can. Take their legs away and make it harder for them to run and then we are in full rotation. Everyone is watching and helping each other out and we’re good.”

**** **** **** ****

Halftime

Johnson, Barkley and Smith

Barkley on the Suns’ offense not changing from their previous approach; “Phoenix is going to try to outscore people, they don’t make any secret about it. They went back to their old style. Their new style will end like the old style ended. The Lakers are just going to beat them up inside. What’s scary is that the Lakers are playing this well without Pau Gasol. It’s going to end exactly the same way, they are going to have a great regular season and get beat in the playoffs.”

Smith: “You’re giving the Phoenix Suns no credit. With the personnel they have right now, they are 8-1 and they don’t have the strongest team and they don’t have enough shooters.”

**** **** **** ****

Collins on the impressive start of the season for the Phoenix Suns: “It’s been a long traveling early season for the Suns. If they lose this game tonight, to start 8-2 with all the changes and go out and do all the things they have, what a great, great start for Alvin Gentry.”

Collins on the Lakers keeping an even tempo against the Suns: “What the Lakers have done tonight is they have not taken quick jump shots. Anytime the game has gotten fast we’ve heard that familiar whistle of Phil Jackson like slow the ball down, make the extra pass, make the Suns defend, get the shot you want to get.”

Collins on the Lakers racking up points in the paint: “What (the Lakers) have done is they’ve punished the Suns inside. They now have almost as many points in the paint as the Suns have total. That’s the power and size of the L.A. Lakers. With no Pau Gasol, that’s scary.”

TNT’s Cheryl Miller interviewed injured Lakers forward Pau Gasol.

Gasol on the slow recovery of his injured hamstring: “It’s been responding ok, it’s been over a month for me. It’s been a long process and I have to be more patient. I’m in a good place, taking the right steps and I’m getting a feel for it. I’m trying to be extra cautious are extra tricky so I want to make sure I heal it right the first time and don’t let it become a long term issue.”

TNT’s Cheryl Miller interviewed Lakers guard Kobe Bryant after the game.

Bryant on the Lakers playing good defense against the Suns: “We did a great job trying to corral a team that’s been shooting out of this world. I’ve very pleased with this effort.”

Bryant on the Lakers next opponent the Denver Nuggets: “It’s going to be a physical game. We have history together going back in the playoffs. I’m sure they’ll be ready and so will we.”

**** **** **** ****

Inside the NBA

Johnson, Barkley and Smith

Barkley on Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s diagnosis: “Kareem made me feel a lot better. He was so calm and patient talking about it. I want to wish him the best and everyone that is battling cancer. You know Ernie, we battled it with you and it never hit home until it hit you. Everybody battling cancer, I want to give them my best.”

TNT’s Craig Sager interviewed Cavaliers forward LeBron James after the game.

James on wanting to change his number from #23 next year in deference to NBA legend Michael Jordan: “I grew up idolizing Michael Jordan and to see him coming here to support D-Wade and to support me, it is humbling. It is humbling that the greatest basketball player would take time out of his day to come watch us play. I’ve been thinking about it lately and what I’m going to do is change my number next year. I think no guy in the NBA should ever wear #23. He can’t get the NBA logo, much respect to Jerry West. So I think his number shouldn’t be worn by any player in the NBA, so I’m thinking about changing my number next year to show the tribute of what he did for this game. The pioneer for everybody, he laid down the stepping stones for everybody to come through the ranks. I think I’m going to change my number because that is how much respect I’ve got for a guy like him.”

Sager: “What number will you wear?

James: “Probably six, my Olympic number.”

Sager: “And what uniform will you be wearing next year?”

James: “We’ll see.”

Barkley on other players having a greater impact on the game of basketball than Michael Jordan: First of all, Michael Jordan is the greatest basketball player ever. Magic Johnson and Larry Bird, to me, saved the NBA and made it. Michael took it to another level. It is like in golf, Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer – clearly Tiger Woods has taken it through the roof, same as Michael Jordan. But (Johnson and Bird) had a greater impact on the game than Michael Jordan. Magic Johnson and Larry Bird, I always tell those guys thank you.”

Smith on retiring Michael Jordan’s number: “Wayne Gretzky’s number is retired throughout the league (NHL). I believe that Michael Jordan’s number should be retired. In the Magic and Bird era, he was still the best player throughout the era. I really believe that he is the guy that everyone put the mantle up to. In our lifetime, this visible lifetime, we look at him as the best player ever. It should be looked at in the same way as Wayne Gretzky. It should be retired in every NBA arena the same way it is for Wayne Gretzky in hockey.”

Barkley on how he knew when it was time to retire: “When guys you couldn’t play were kicking my ass. When I started hurting my back pump faking and those guys were blocking my shots. It was very simple for me. It was important for me to leave the game with dignity.”

Barkley on Allen Iverson retiring: “What I wish Allen Iverson would do is say, ‘you know what? I’m one of the greatest players ever, I’m a future Hall of Famer. I’m just going to go to Memphis and work with these young guys. Play whatever they ask me to play and leave the game with my pride and dignity in tact.’ It makes it look like you are spoiled. I like Allen Iverson, but he can say, ‘I’m just going to chill and the game has been great to me.’”

And here are highlights from an ESPN media conference call marking the start of the women’s college basketball season on the Alleged Worldwide Leader.

Stiff: “It’s in a healthy state. We’re committing our resources to approximately 250 games. I think that bodes well for the game. There’s plenty of talent being cultivated and coming through the ranks. We have players that stay with us for four years. The sport is taking all steps in the right direction to grow this game for years to come.”

Peck: “I think the talent is continuing to improve and there’s more rivalries and exciting basketball games to watch other than just what everyone used to look for in the UConn-Tennessee matchup.”

Lawson: “One of the things I’m really excited about this year is the amount of great young players on teams; the amount of freshman that will have an impact on the national race. As the athleticism of the younger players gets better, that overall makes the game better.”

We’re done with this post. Still more to come.
